I asked the Dr after Malc had been diagnosed with prostrate cancer why they did not test all men's psa he said it didn't prove anything, you can't rely on having bladder problems either because if the cancer spreads the prostate can stop growing

Hope all is well will keep my fingers crossed for you@tu*

PSA is useful when looking at change. An isolated value at one point in time proves nothing as men's levels vary - unless they are extremely high of course.

Doctors differ..........
Biopsy is the real test.
It's no big deal.
Colleague was diagnosed too late.
It's now creeping steadily through his body.

PSA is a useful marker but best used to monitor disease activity in those already diagnosed.

Thanks guys .... As previously posted ... Had many blood tests and an MRI scan and several DRE's !! (You know what that is !!)

The PSA is monitoring as everything so far is inconclusive .... No signs and nothing on scans ... But 6 monthly blood tests to monitor ANY change
Had the offer of biopsy ... But advised to wait for a few more blood and DRE test results .....
So following docs advice and having regular PSA
He did say results were a bit like licking your finger to see which way wind is blowing type of test ..... Luckily he didn't use the same finger as the DRE !!!!

Had to raise this again (excuse the pun !!)

Just had another check up (and finger upman8um) and get the results of my PSA blood test

My PSA is currently 3.57 last time 3.8 And it's been as low as 3.0 so over time is relatively stable

Scans were inconclusive but did say my prostate is larger than average ! (I did say prostrate !)

Discharged by consultant today as he didn't think the biopsy was necessary quite yet ... but still require blood tests every 12 months ..(in case it rises higher than 4.0 )

So ..... think I have been lucky !!
The only issue is my hypertension and paraumbilical hernia (operation date pending) other than that ....., I've passed my MOT !!!

It's always best to keep getting a yearly MOT on ourselves by the Doctors ....as well as our Bikes/cars @tu* !!!

Afternoon all
This issue raised its ugly head again this week

After my most recent results from my PSA tests The specialist reckons I should go for a biopsy !!
The PSA is a bit too high again and rising !!(about 6 .... should be nearer 4 !)
So after MRIs and ultrasound he wants to cross the t’s and dot the i’s and test a load of samples !!! Approx 50 of the buggers !!!!
He ‘thinks’ I’m disease free (it’s a percentage game) ... As I’m fit and young (unlike most in here) BUT ....he still wants to do cover all basses !

Apparently it’s a general anaesthetic and he’s ‘going in’ from between the rear end and front end !!!
Maybe as soon as next month (as my MRI is still in date !)
He told me a few side effects (as they ‘have to’) and there are a few which scare me .... but they are less scary than if they find something !!!

Ohhh Joy !!!

Had biopsy- local anaesthetic.
No big deal.
50 samples seems a lot.

Unfortunately mine was positive and was removed.

Maybe time for 2nd opinion!!!!!!!

I had this done late last year. Usual high risk factors including rising psa and family history. I was told that doing it this way is the 'gold star treatment and taking that many samples gave them the highest chance of detecting any cancer cells.

The actual procedure is far better then the local anaesthetic method which I had done about 5 years ago. I found that method fairly painful and unpleasant. This time I just turned up, fell asleep and the next thing I knew a pretty nurse was giving me a cup of coffee.

I had no after effects or pain at all apart from some blood in my pee for a couple of days afterwards and was back at work the following day, although I do have a non manual job.

Mine was clear. Fingers crossed for you.

I would always recommend men getting themselves checked if they have any concerns having lost my husband and brother in law to illnesses whose problems stated off with prostate cancer which wasn't found early enough.

This IS the 2nd opinion
The local anaesthetic is thru the rear end ..
The newer and less invasive is the area between arse and balls ... more samples can be taken and more accurate

A thttps://www.baus.org.uk/_userfiles/pages/files/Patients/Leaflets/Transperineal biopsies.pdfransperineal biopsy
This is where a needle is inserted into the prostate through the skin behind the scrotum. It's usually done under a general anaesthetic (while you're asleep). It has the advantage of a reduced risk of infection

Ouch !!!

Come on you Hatters
I’ve asked twice now at my locak surgery to start having tests, but they just flat refuse to do them. Both times they just printed off about 5 pages of info about how inaccurate the psa test is. They don’t have an answer for how else I should find out early enough to do something about it mind??

Different surgery...

Yea, read about some saying no need to test. Well I'm glad I did. I wouldn't be writing this now.

During my recent enforced ( very expensive ) 4 hour visit to a private hossy in Spain, they did a full work up of bloods..Apart from being ( still ) low on potassium happy to say that everything else came back fine
Not sure it was worth £800 fooking quid though
