Men's problems ???

10 years ago when Malc was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I asked why the PSA test wasn't carried out routinely on men once they reached 50. I was told it could only be used as an indicator of possible problems if there was a sudden increase in levels, also some men live with high PSA levels without any problems. You would have hoped that 10 years on things had changed and a more reliable test had been found

Good to hear that you’re more or less sorted, Darren. Most excellent news (y)

I’d be a bit reluctant to get tested. I’m no doctor but I’ve heard that the test is best described as ‘not very reliable’ from too many with cancer being missed and those in the clear being flagged as positive. Obviously, it has saved a lot of lives but, if I’ve been informed correctly, it’s also caused a number of needless problems.

If anyone can shed some light on this or clear things up a little, I’d be most grateful.
I can’t answer the question but I take the view that not having the test is the one guaranteed way of not knowing anything.

I agree a PSA test could be unreliable ….
I was very lucky and had several years of tests which showed a trend …. No other symptoms !!
Even the ultrasounds didn’t pick anything up Obvious ….. the consultants said ‘ we will do a template biopsy …. Just to be sure you haven’t got cancer’
The biopsy was the deciding factor …. As it found quite a few positive samples !! Much to my and the consultants amazement !!
So one PSA may not be a good test …. But several over a few years giving a trend helped me

It’s like a car dashboard …. We see temp, oil pressure, volts, ammeter gauges …
If one isn’t normal it’s not a guarantee the engine is wrong but it gives you something to look out for and do other tests !!!
