hi matty, you,ve probley alreadly got this in hand ,but i wounder if it would it be a good idea to find out who lives where in the uk so maybe you can start to plan your route or is there any particular place you want to go or have your picture took?is there any members in parts of the uk out of reach to you who can help with there area ?maybe advertiving or fund raiseing or just knowing the best roads in there distict to make the most of your trip

A ballpark guess would be about 1800/2000 miles around the UK
we have done a quick check on autoroute and its about 3500 miles around the coastline

3500 -/- 150 miles per leg = 24 groups
150 miles = approx 3 1/2 hours multiply by 24 = 3.5 days aprox and thats going 24 hours aday unless i worked it out wrong of course.

ok we are geting a few idea's now, thanks guys/gals.

I have today rec'd a telephone call from Macmillan, very nice and helpful.

They will provide materials like sponsor forms, advertising and press release etc.

once we dedcide how we are going to do this then i have the lady's contact number to give her a call and start the ball rolling.

The problem i see of going around the uk although i think its a good idea and i'd like to do it (in sections of course) is getting the people involved. yes we have a lot of interest but the time it will take 3/4 days with peeps at work and 24 hours aday and getting some to do the night sections may prove a little difficult unless everyone proves me wrong.

Here are a few suggestion.

1. coastle roads around the uk.
2. Lands end to john o'groats
3. sort a starting point then ride to certain county's (to be agreed)and collect riders on the way and finish back at the starting point however far people want to travel with maybe camping at night.

What i need to know is.

A. who wants to actually do the ride
B. would you prefer Fri / Sat / Sun or all 3 if we go with option 3 above
c. which of the above do you want to do

or would you prefer to help in some other way (orgainising / things on the weekend etc).
What you all must not forget is that this is not just posted on here, it has been posted on other bike forums regardless of bike. so i hope there will be others involved.

I'll do a night ride or any of the three days or whatever - just so long as it doesn't clash with the TT!!!

quite happy to take Matty pillion if he's willing.

just say when and where and I'll book the friday off if necessary

Would it not be a lot to ride 24hrs for 3 or 4 days solid with no sleep. Then if the media are involved this would need to be milked for all it's worth to maximise fund raising, intreviews etc, again all taking time. Meeting groups and dropping off the last group will again take more time. Unless I'm missing your point I'd have thought it more prudent to have it as a sedate ride rather than a race to finish.
A slow cavalcade of bikers must raise more public awareness than charge of the light brigade.:dunno:

mick i think your missing the point

group A rides for 150 ish miles and gets to the meeting point of group B. group A hangs around and collects sponsors/collection while group B continues with the next 150 ish miles. group B meets group C bla bla bla. so no one is riding for more than about 3 to 3 1/2 hours

and smix ill take you up on the offer of taking matt and hes up for it (give me a chance to go solo for a change hehehe) when is the TT

ill be booking the friday off work and maybe the thursday aswell.

Count me in for Friday to Sunday availability, Matty on pillion is ok with me.

As its a charity ride speed limits s h o u l d be adheared to.

As the coastal round UK ride seems in appropriate due to time frame... unless its a BH weekend... we could skip out areas like the lake district, the very edge of Scotland, the tip of lands end etc... or work a route and time and call it the (x number) of counties ride, could we hit every county.

Rather than a coastal route wouldn't visiting major cities generate more interest & cash? ie meeting in hospital car parks letting children with cancer sit on the bikes etc

Isn't Matty and yerself doing the thing in it's entirety? If your intention is to do it 3.5 hour stints between groups, wouldn't that mean a swap over would be between say 2am and 5am. Would there be many people about at that time?
Sorry if I'm being a bit dim.

Very well stated there Clive. Will take into consideration that all silver bikes would need to leave before us.

Good thinking, as we're the fastest you wouldn't want to give us a head start as well.

i understand what you are saying mick, and it depends on what time peeps what to give, there is no way i would do the hole lot in one go. im looking at the maps at the min to see what the best options are.
