Sadly I also suspect this may be the start of a significant balance of power shift.
The response from the West will be sanctions only and as Beaker previously pointed out These are basically ineffective.
The only western country with significant military strength is the US and I don't think they have the home support to intervene - although the "hate commies" might motivate!
The UK lacks the ability in resource terms. While UK forces are able to punch well above their weight there just isn't the volume of equipment and manpower to make a significant difference.
It's not like the previous European wide wars where conscription and turning manufacturing over to the war effort could produce results.
We no longer have the manufacturing capacity.
We don't even have enough aircraft/tanks/Artillery etc to put each existing service person to work.
This flexing by Putin simply demolishes the myth that NATO or the West has any effective response to either Russia or China.
The body blow now would be any action by China in its neck of the woods.
Yep. Couldn't agree more. After the various poorly managed War Against Terror actions, the West hasn't the stomach for military intervention.
As for our Armed Forces.... well if they're run down any further then those few who are left will be on first name terms.
And on the subject of the equipment.... years of inept procurement decisions made by starry eyed politicians, hypnotised by hi-tech bling and convinced that small quantities of technological do-it-alls will win against vast numbers of basic, but capable tanks, aircraft and ships are now about to come how to roost with a vengeance.
I'll be looking forward to an MOD letter arriving any minute asking if I'd like to help the war effort by making parts for Typhoon aircraft in my shed.
