Voltage monitoring LED

5mm, fitted into the infill panel below the clocks a la bmwdumptruck. Suitably waterproofed with a touch of silicon.

?10 very well spent.@tu*

Still works a treat and has saved us from a complete charging failure in France. (For the second time the regulator overheated & took out a generator coil - it gave us advanced warning of the charging fault & we managed to nurse the bike back for 1000 miles by not using the lights). Without a doubt we'd have been stuck with complete charging failure had we not had it.

One thing if you do fit one of these little gems - BELIEVE IT! It will be spot on!

good looking AND modest
Still NOT working, as I don't have one!! just waited "that bit longer" so all the kinks could be worked out by the more knowledgeable on here  and then go for the better option, and at the hit/failure rate, so far, Clive's option and answers seems "on the face of it" to be leading!!@tu* GO CLIVE!!@tu*

Update

I fitted one of these (Sparkright) in November 2010, it was an 8mm size and I fitted it to the infill panel below the clocks. It has always worked and I just kind of got used to it being there over the last 8,000 miles.

Last night it started to show amber when running and I assumed it was playing up. Checked the charging circuit when I got home and, to my surprise, it is only charging at 12.4V, exactly as the LED indicated.

That little LED is now my best friend!

Alternator or rectifryer fault?
Mine also gave indication that the battery was weak, ignition on, engine off it used to create red flash red, then it went to red x 3 flashes, battery was charged ok, so I check the battery and it was weak under load, changed the battery over winter and all's well again. Saved blowing up the alternator or rect.

Fault finding results

I hate electrical faults as my knowledge is too patchy to be confident about my findings.

The batery gives 12.7V when engine revs at 2500rpm - which is lower than the expected 13.5V min so I assume a problem with either the generator or the reg/rec.

With the engine idling I get;
0.1V between the positive (red) reg/rec output to battery,
0.08V between negative (green) reg/rec output to battery.
0.12V between the switched input wire and battery.
These suggest there is no problem with the reg/rec connections

So I switch of engine and check the genny

I then disconnected the 3 yellow wires from the genny and the resistance between each pair is 0.9ohms.

I then check the resistance between the yellow wires from the genny and the frame and find I get 1.2ohms. I reckon that this suggests that I may have a short on the generator.

Then I start the engine again and measure the voltage between each pair of yellow wires from the genny and get 32V across each pair, which suggests the genny is okay?

Now I'm confused.

I changed the genny two years ago when one of the coils melted, and I put in one of Jaws' improved replacements.... do I need to do it again?

Any comments would be appreciated.

sounds like genny is ok 32 v tween any of the yellows is good and 1.2 ohms well dont forget the genny coils are just a long bit of wire so resistance should be low if coils was gone the resistance would be high.
no doubt john will be along shortly to clear this up.
so its now either battery or rectifier
should be getting a charge around 3k 3.5k revs so rev a little higher and check the charge again.
did you upgrade your rec same time as the genny?
If its the old version and not a new one from jaws I would be more inclined to think that has gone.

No, the reg/rec is the original one but I've been told that the 2000 EFI pre-digit dash were quite robust.
I'll spend another hour in the garage tomorrow trying to narrow it down further, I wish I had a garage with power so I didn't have to rely on sunlight!

look for a small suitcase generator on ebay or from a carboot sale. just remember to padlock it to something solid or the pikeys will relieve you of it.....and you cant run anything too heavy off it, but a couple of decent lights take very little current.

like this maybe...http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Portable-Super-Silent-Suitcase-Petrol-Generator-0-7KVA-/200724874981?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item2ebc2286e5#ht_6094wt_858

dln: After much lobbying we have finally been renamed "Staines upon Thames". Doesn't that sound so much better? Being neighbours we ought to meet sometime, just let me get it working first!
4_4_2: good idea, thanks, head torches just don't cut it.

Thanks to both of you for caring.

Or a rechargeable strip lamp.

2000 model, my y2k went through an alternator, first was a battery failure, next was a melted alt/reg plug. Still on the original reg/rect though. Mind you on long runs I always carry a reg and alt spare.

welcome....... I used to have a genny, but I sold it when I got a garage with power included.

getting really pissed of with my 1100 carb

its had new genny/rec, several batteries in the last 2 years.
yesterday was a bit sluggish starting so did a quick check
12.5 v igni off
14.5 v engine running no matter what revs, was giving this even on tickover

wtf going on ???
will have to remove all panniers etc to get at rec to test now
not a happy bunny
