hi all, would value your opinions, please. oil change time for my 2000 efi bird. synthetic, semi or so- yesterday- darling bog standard compressed rock. different dealer, different advice ! :dunno:

Bird will run fine on mineral oil (originally recommended for the bird) or semi synthetic.

DO NOT EVER USE FULLY SYNTHETIC.

I've been using mineral oil since I owned my 2000 Bird, from 13,000 miles... its now done as near a damn it 50,000. There is no signs of engine wear as far as I know, for instance the valves are still in middle tolerance and though checked at 20,000 and 45,000 by myself, they have not yet needed adjustment. The bike does not use any oil from service to service.

And w;;v

Maybe so Smedly......but

many on here have had problems with fully synth and the bbird runs perfectly on semi-synth so WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO USE FULLY SYNTH ANYWAY! :-0)

If you are going to offer advice it should be based on more than one bike.. Sorry

There are plenty of documented issues and problems from all round the world from folk using fully synthetic oil in a Bird

Of course there are always going to be those who fly in the face of evidence and reason and get away with it.. Good luck to em.. ( and in this instance they are obviously wealthy with a good deal of disposable income they do not want or need !! )

Having to work on birds with huge mileages I would suggest you stick with that which the majority have found to be good.. Semi synth

John if you have an issue with me then spell it out, I detected some sort of blunt ignorance from you on several of my posts, there is nothing at all wrong with what I posted, I use oil designed for bikes period, FS oil is the best, I've always used it in all my engines including when I was racing, I provided a thread for others to read that has many people using FS oil without issue, it's entirely my choice and I am merely sharing my experience, perhaps you could provide some links to where people have experienced difficulties instead of slating me.

the shouldn't be let lose with a spanner was another one, very childish mate and uncalled for

You are taking this personally and I am sure John does not mean it that way. FS oil may well be the best for engines in competition but Honda says semi-synth is best in the real world so let it go at that. John has without doubt more experience than anyone on bbirds on the road and if he says use semi-synth is the way to go unless you have more experience in working with high mileage bbirds than he has then I would suggest you bow to his superior knowledge.:-0)

Nowt personal at all.. but you keep making absolute statements that are sometimes flawed to say the least

In this thread

No.. you did not use oil designed for THIS bike
You have recommended oil that is very specifically warned against ( somewhere I still have original workshop infosheet from Honda warning about it.. The fact that a lot of Honda dealers now use it only shows how little they know or care about us, their customers, or indeed their own product

As to childish.,.. I find it interesting that you thought the spanner statement was aimed at you !

I would suggest you do a simple search on this forum and you will find the threads you seek ref fully synth oil in the bird.. Frothing, vibes, oil being burnt.. it goes on and on

As to the question of whether I have a problem with you personally, no of course not.. However I do have a problem with information being posted that is not grounded in good engineering principles or indeed on experiences outside a persons own immediate sphere..

Perhaps it is the way you word your replies ?

You make statements.. not suggestions.. So in return I make statements.. but they seem to upset you ?

I have worked on a fair few Birds over the past 11 years ( in fact I do not do any work on any other make or model ), yet I would not deign to make absolute statements the way you do Smedly..

far enough John I have absorbed the comments and they are put away lol

If you read my post again I simply stated that I use FS oil and don't experience any problems with it and also referred to a thread on another forum where people have the same experience as me, I did not at any time advise anyone to do anything, as I have said I was sharing my own experience nothing more, I did not say it was OK to use use FS oil simply that I have used it and experienced no problems, as for SS oil, I would say not a problem to use at all and if you don't feel adventurous enough to go the FS route prob safer with SS,

I live in a very hot country where it never lets up, oil choice is something I don't take lightly, more often than not my radiator fan is running even when the bike is moving and isn't long coming on when I stop at lights or in traffic, viscosity is a factor here as well but I just feel better with FS oil, my own personal choice.

and sorry for the missunderstanding, I do appriciate your extreme knowledge of the BB

cheers

This thread has great potential.

However, to get back to the point, I have used Halfords own brand semi sythentic for the last 150,000 miles or so in two Birds, changing every 8k or so with filter, with absolutely no problems. In fact it still has a hint of the original red colour at change and remains very 'viscous; rather than the black water I used to get out of my Hillman Avenger Tiger in the 70s.

No chance. However, you will be pleased to learn that it is likely that all banks will only be allowed to charge £20 for returning an item unpaid and £20 for sending a letter under soon to be introduced legislation.

Just goes to prove that the idiots who come up with this stuff have zero grip on reality.:wank:

Basically means that the people that behave themselves will be subsidising those that don't.

Sound familiar??

that BB engine is made of the right stuff, one thing I have noticed though when the engine gets really hot is the gearbox becomes a bit knotchy, it still goes through the gears ok but it does change, I will prob look for a 20/50 oil next change

PS, check out my post on the road trips thread with photo's

Which part of Ireland is a hot country?8ree!

noobie

Clueless in most things
my bike and I are in Thailand, well most of the time

I'd hate to use your sat nav smeds..try to go to ireland and it takes you to Thailand? Must have bought it from Lidls

With the exception of one very race orientated bike I've always used semi synth. One one occasion a chum had put fully in his blade and kept complaining of slipping so changed it back to reccomended semi and did the trick so it seems semi works best for most bikes.

I have known a few use fully and because they ride so little they have not noticed any issues

Given the price difference and that semi does the job as reccomended by most bike companies I'll be sticking with semi Ta very much
