Applaudable morals Derek. I know people who do it every year selling the bikes on making a decent profit each time.

I did the Ride to Work thing last year for the first time. Crazy discount! Not just the tax but my company pay 10% and then Evans also threw in £100 voucher.

£1000 worth of expenditure ended up costing about £450 I think!

Gone & done it, pick up my Carrera vulcan tomorrow after 4pm, they wouldn’t do any deals as the bike was already reduced by £60.
Thought about the cycle to work scheme but as I will not be using it to go to work on I thought it would not be right.

And what colour Lycra have you gone for Derek??

As I have already said, I will not be wearing lycra, I would look like a beach ball, however I have lost 6lbs since Tuesday.
And as I said before......investing in a good pair of cycling shorts will pay dividends. Even if you feel you have to wear something over the top.

Centre of crank to underside of top bar 19”

Sounds like it would be too big for Derek anyway. :(

Still a bargain though. If you stuck it on fleabay for £350 I think you'd be fighting them off with a stick.

The Cycle to Work Scheme isn't just about cycling to work, it's about encouraging employees to get/stay fit and healthy.

Just my thoughts Derek, whilst cycling will improve your cardiac health and make you stronger, you will have to do one hell of a lot for it to be a useful weightloss program.

Yep. Wot he said. Plus cardio works far better if you throw in some work with weights.

Exercise only works if you tie it in with a long hard look at what you eat....and drink. There, I've said it. On the plus side, there's no calories in whisky. ;)

The cycling is just a bit extra, I hate running, I am fairly active, walking the dog, tending to the horses, looking after Grandkids etc, I have already altered my diet, no more sugar, cut down on bread, more fresh fruit & veg.

On the positive side cycling is far less stressful on the joints than running.

I too cut down on bread and felt an immediate impact.

At the end of the day it is simple - eat leases calories than burnt = weight loss.

Sounds simple...doesn't it:(

Going back to the talks I received during cardiac rehab, there is a difference between activity and exercise. Walking the dog is often more of a stroll as the dog stops to sniff every tree/lanppost. Ditch the dog and go out walking at a good pace that will raise your heart rate . Same with the tending the horses, looking after grandkids, short burst of activity.
I never thought I would 'take' to the gym, but once you've had a good talking to yourself and understand the reason why your doing it then it makes sense and I personally now enjoy it. Plus you can go do 45-60 minutes, any weather.

Yes, working the major muscles helps keep the blood vessels in them elastic, therefore better to cope with blood pressure.

The fact that the cardiovascular benefits of weightlifting were independent of aerobic exercises such as walking and running means strength training is sufficient in and of itself. It alone will lower your risk of heart attack and stroke, even if you don’t meet the recommended guidelines for aerobic activity.

I think the pump is supposed to be used on the tyres not the belly. Check the manual.

Of,course there are alternatives to Lycra....

Note that the chap on the right has awful, technique, pedalling on the flat of his feet. A sure way of getting pain in the knees and ankles, or worse.

Going slightly off subject, whilst I’ve been taking Ramipril on a daily basis for high blood pressure I have suffered with lower back pain & found that I’m prone to coughing & can’t shake it off, been off Ramipril now for a week, no back pain, no coughing & I feel tons better.
