Are you telling me you have never knowingly broken the speed limit on the public highway, DA

No - I'm telling you that I'd never dream of riding at 150+ on open, UK public roads - and I think anyone who
does and gets caught deserves everything they get by way of punishment for their stupidity, that's all.

So what is the fastest you have been on a public highway that in your judgement was safe, DA? :-0)

I agree.

Given the fact it was at 5.20pm there was every chance he was putting other people at risk.

Done twattish speeds myself, so know how it easy it is to get sucked in, but at 2am on a clear and empty dual carriageway on a summer's evening is definitely less hazardous.

I agree, DV. It is just the condemning attitude of some that bothers me. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. :-0) Continuous high speed on a public highway is crazy but anyone who has ridden a Bbird knows how easy it is to go up through the gears to a silly speed and back down in a very short distance.

Why do you think he got caught? Stupidity more than the speed.

Would you do 160mph through the centre of Stoke?

No?

Well why do you have a bike that's capable of that speed, if you don't travel everywhere at that speed?

There's a time and a place to play. Some people have the common sense to know when and where that may be.

I speed where its appropriate & relatively safe, just like you do

You or I don't know the full facts of the guys conviction, for example road condition, bike condition, traffic or any one of hundreds of other factors, but I do know that piece of road well & know that its very often empty a lot of the time as safe as anywhere can be to give a bike a run

Whether he was acting the dick or not I don't know & neither do you but he got convicted for speeding & nothing else ,the comment was made that it was "extremely dangerous " in relation to the 160mph I disagree with that

Like I said the difference between most of us & him is he got caught :-0)

Feel free to start calling anyone from here who gets caught speeding uncomplimentary names & see how that goes 8rfl@

Don't be naughty, William! :t :}

Yes, I've done ?twattish speeds? in the past ? but that?s why I bought a track bike and will continue
to do trackdays for as long as I?m able ? ?cos I ride like a twat if I don?t get my ?fix?.

However, my track and road experience combined also enable me to appreciate different conditions,
my skill limitations ? and those of other road users.

Most of all, after many crashes on the racetrack, I DO appreciate that there?s not much time to do anything
at racing speeds (i.e. 100+ mph) if/when it goes ?tits up?.

At those speeds on the public highway, you don?t give yourself, or anyone else, the best opportunity of arriving
safely at your destination.

I didn?t want to go down this route ?cos I was just stating my opinion ? but watch the video and draw your own
conclusions about ?speed-awareness?, the absolute necessity for which is what I?m really trying to express here.

Clueless in most things
That last video da is a bit of a red herring as there were no injuries or accidents on the original reason for this thread, but I do get your drift

No - it's not a red herring, in my opinion.

It's the potential, not the act, that's the focal point for me.

"Potential" meaning what happens if/when there is a loss of control.

The potential for catastrophe wasn't realised in the OP...

I feel sorry for the family of the lad killed in that video but the truth of it as I see it is that he was riding like a twat & if that was his normal riding style it was only a matter of time

Although I agree incidents like that are caused by a combination of speed & lack of awareness of the riders surroundings, junctions other traffic etc I don't see that it has a bearing on the original post which was a completely different scenario

On a personal note ,it may not come across in my previous posts, yes I speed when conditions allow like most of you & every single bike I have owned has been flat out at some point (apart from the bird) but its not how I ride all the time or even 90% of it @tu*

Now some have said save speed for the track or similar, so the question is on which UK track is it possible to get a bird up to 160+ and stay on ?

You can't see the relation between the original riders speed and his lack of awareness? Like, he wasn't aware of the speed camera?

Perhaps the fact that he subsequently sold the bike, might mean that he realised it.

My question is- which UK Road is it legal to get a bird up to 160+ ?

Oh, come on, Slim - riding at 97mph = "like a twat", but riding at 160 mph = "not like a twat" ?

I don't believe it was a completely different scenario - only the outcomes were different.
Both were riding far in excess of the national speed limit - one culprit paid with a fine and
the other paid with his life - that's the potential - the difference I'm talking about.

Now some have said save speed for the track or similar, so the question is on which UK track is it possible to get a bird up to 160+ and stay on ?

Snetterton; Silverstone, Bruntingthorpe - don't try it at Mallory Park! :-0)

Track days are different, Slim.

If you are serious about track days then forget about taking your P&J. I have done a lot of track days in the past and my advice would be to buy a cbr600 or even a cbr400rr and use that. You will not be worrying about sliding it down the track and having to walk home 8rfl@ and you will find with some practice you can ride away from the R1s etc. I have only ever come off twice on track days but I have had seven trips in an ambulance off bikes on the road in the 50s and 60s.and lots of low sides with minimal damage to me and the bike. The brakes and tyres in those days were diabolical and I was incredibly stupid. I even put a borrowed Black Shadow down the road and the bits alone cost me an arm and a leg. brok3

I would not say that poor lad was riding like a twat but if it was me I would defo be assuming that car was going to cross my path and have dropped my speed down considerably.

Even now I never knowingly speed in 30s, 40s and 50s but as soon as I pass the derestricted sign I will drive/ride at a speed I consider safe. The 60 limit was only brought in during 1973? as a temporary measure because of the oil crisis when we told Iran we were taking their oil and they should think themselves lucky we paid them anything! Honest, we did! Their reply was to nationalise our oil companies. 8rfl@ My main point in this is that we have all done it and we should be more sympathetic of anyone caught who has not being riding like a knob, just making progress. :-0)

My take on it...
The sentence he received is the same as 'anyone' would get for being clocked at that speed on a public road (either car or motorcycle related)

I would be interested, but even more surprised to see if a case has ever gone to court and the judge has deemed the individual to have been travelling safely at 150mph or whatever and therefore doled out a lenient sentence :dunno: :dunno:
