Yep. I agree, un burnt fuel smell needs clarification. Clear one matter at a time.

has this bike ever been up the road? could there be some damage to the loom, maybe a rub, shorting to the frame, that is robbing the sparking circuit when the starter is pressed but not on a bump? It's as if using the starter button and circuits is bypassing (shorting out) the coil packs that generate the sparks! I think its important now to get a spark plug out and see if it is actually sparking when being cranked.....it has to be electrical, because if it was a fuelling issue, it would not bump, or it would cut out after being bumped...

edit, went back and read the whole thread, so answered my question, This bike HAS been dropped, the week Paddy bought it, how much damage was there and in what area? this fault could now be anywhere on the bike!

Now, now 442. It's only a motorbike!!!

Let's not loose sight of the facts.

Bike starts on bump.
Bike does not start on starter.
Battery is good.
God is in heaven.
Devil is on earth.

Bwahahahahhahahaha.

PS. You could have a point.

Probably you are correct 442. Fuel or spark! :-0)

Well, lots of updates from you all!!

The bike went down on the RHS. No real damage bar scuffs and a snapped screen.

I'll be testing this more tomorrow, it is starting to get rather annoying. Attaching a battery from my van still gives you the same fast spinning but no fire.

I'll have to strip the bike down to get to the plugs which is a royal pain... I can't see how it would not spark if it does on the bump... but I can take a look.

I'm this close to just chucking it on ebay. The loom fix hasn't been done as I cannot work out what I need to do with it, I lack a soldering gun currently and I also lack power where I can work on the bike, taking it indoors isn't an option :p

Have patience, Paddy.

Is there a smell of unburnt fuel when cranking?:dunno:

Not that I have noticed. There is also no bang/backfire when it does finally roar into life.

Beats me, Paddy.

Perhaps Jaws will have come across this before with his massive experience.
If Jaws can't help I would try getting together with someone with a similar Bbird and try swapping the engine stop relay and also the ECM!

I can see no way in which fooked up wiring could prevent a spark whilst cranking but start easily with a bump. If it did I would expect the engine to catch when still turning over after the starter button was released. I thought Petros' problems were baffling but your fault is really weird.

It looks as though engine stop and fuel cut relays are identical. If the numbers tally then it would be worth trying a swap.

Tank tilted back, airbox off, no fuel going into inlet on the start button, no spark either.

Any ideas while its still in bits?? :bang:

Yes I have come across this SORT of thing loads of times..

The reasons are generally pretty obscure !!

At least it is not a digi dash one so that eliminates at least one weird fault..

As already asked but I cannot find an answer, does the pump prime ok when you turn the ignition on ?

I have fuel now, oddly.

All I have done is unplug the power for the injectors and spray some wd40 in there, pushed it back on.

I still however have no spark.

I've said loads that its priming, I don't crank until priming stops, habit of mine @tu*

Should there be 12v to the coils when IGN is on?

Cheers Paddy,
so it is just the spark that is missing when you hit the button then ?

Currently, yes. Just no spark.

Going to test the starter using a car battery and leave bike battery on bike for other bits to use as juice.

Should eliminate any issues with "enough power" as voltage was dropping to 10v when I pressed the starter...
