time and again I read about the "scum" of the earth getting light sentences for murdering people of all descriptions, due to "extenuating circumstances" in the light of the terrorist threat and drug/kiddie/copper killings being on the rise, would in YOUR opinions bringing back the death penalty be a good idea??
consideration for "miscarriage of justice" to be included in the equation, and possible alternatives, I will try and keep it simple as people can then add their own "spin" on the "general" answers in the poll, :dunno:

In my opinion yes the death penalty should be brought back, however I don't feel that everyone who kills someone should receive the death penalty a plain and simple fact is more people have been killed by people who have been released from prison who would have received the death penalty than there have been executions through miscarriages of justice.

If the death penalty was brought back, what good would it do. It wouldn't prevent a single murder or any crime you can think of.

It may give certain people a bit of temporary satisfaction in the "revenge is sweet " mode but...

The death penalty does not work as a deterrent.

OK, you kill of a person who has commited a heinous crime. That person will never commit another crime but there will be hundreds, thousands more to take their place.

Do you have a death penalty for those who are pre disposed to commit crime.
The mentally subnormal, the insane. The temporarilly mentally ill.
Do you start killing off the off spring of the criminal classes. The "lower classes" of society before they can commit a crime.
Who will decide?
We may not like what we the human race are capable of, but killing anyone that "we" think is undeserving to live is not the answer.
There is not a satisfactory answer.
I don't think that the death penalty is the answer.

You may of course think differently.
But don't give me all that religeous shite and an eye for an eye nonesense.

Discuss and debate but keep religion and emotion out of the argument.

If a convicted murderer was to be released from prison & kill again that is a death that could have been prevented, it has happened on a number of occasions and it will happen again.
bring back the death penalty, not for religion not for revenge but for prevention & protection.

Yes, in this day and age, evidence can be offered to allow no scope for error DNA etc. I am sorry but certain crimes should carry the Death Penalty, like raping a 12week old infant for starters, and I would be happy to flick the switch.

Tricky one but yes, it should be brought back for the likes of Ian Huntly where we are certain he is the perp! I agree it probably wont work much as a deterrent but it would show that society wont stand for certain heinous crimes and would also help keep down the numbers in prisons (gotta be a good thing for tax payers)

How about this scenario......

You are a single man or married with kids, whatever. You meet a girl in a bar/club and have a one night stand with her in your car. You kiss goodbye and go your separate ways.

Going through the deserted park 10 mins later on the way home, in the dark and seen by nobody she gets attacked and stabbed/strangled by some lunatic. In the meantime, you have gone off somewhere quiet to clean up and compose yourself.

Your DNA is all over her, and hers is all over the inside of your car, along with her pants. Witnesses from the club say they saw her leave with you. You cannot prove where you were.

Thank God for DNA eh?
