Still wouldnt do it whilst riding on the road, you'd have to be doing really stupid speeds to get your knee down properly on public roads; as my instructor said to me, it's the ones who come in with ground knee sliders who are the slowest (if they've done it riding on the road) because they've learnt to lean off at much lower speeds.

Andy.......................... so your point about having to do it at stupid speeds is incorrect then or your instructor is wrong ?:dunno:

Knee down has nothing to do with speed, it's all about positioning but I agree that knee down doesn't = fast (on the road at least  ).

Well I'm certainly not going to argue with you 'cause I have no doubt you're a damn sight quicker and more experianced than me , was just repeating what Dave Burgess (the instructor) told me (and it made me feel a lot better about me not getting my knee down on the public roads)

why this constant desire to get ones knee down ? It may well be a by product of the way you are riding. Surely it shouldn't be an end in itself and yet we get such idiotic letters in MCN (Sun for motorcyclists) asking 'how do I get my knee down ?' Its no wonder we get treated like a bunch of twats by the powers that be.

Speaking for myself Steve, I do it wherever and whenever I can - the reason for doing it is FUN! I find it fun to light farts too, but that also might not be your cup of tea, or something you can do, so don't worry about it?

And I am a twat, which would explain why the powers that be treat me as such g0551p

As the great and the good have spoken I will add my peneth as the stupid and gormless.

The first part of any enjoyment of something new is...have no expectations or think about it too much. The reason being is that you have to build up your confidence first then you will find things slot into place.

Secondly I would advise a track day, this helps with the confidence and most instructors know how to find the way it works for you.

I personally found at the begining that I put too much pressure through my hands/arms which caused some numbness in my right hand, then I tried supporting my weight against the tank with my knees and this took considerable pressure off my arms and allowed a more relaxed style.

Moving your body seemed to (in my mind anyway) allow me to think the centre of gravity was now more in tune with my bike/body this then allowed me to lean a bit more, good tyres help with the confidence also.I also tend to raise my foot slightly to what ever corner I am approaching so that foot is raised meaning the balls of my peg are on the corrosponding peg.

My last bit is a simple thing (as I am), don't feel the need to get your knee down , look at most road riders with the quickest (in generall) being the police and they rarely have to get thier knee down to make fast progress. It's like wheeling just because you can doesn't mean you have too, not all track styles transfer onto road effectively.

Do what you want, when you want, and how you want and if you still can't get your knee down but want grazed knee sliders...try an axle grinder

My VFR I could put the pegs down easy but have never been able to do it on the bird. Wish I could. For those that can, it shows another form of control and confidence.

Well did another Ron Haslam Premier track day yesterday, the instructor was really good and spent time showing me proper positioning on the bike and persuded me that I needed to slow down a bit to go faster (sounds wrong but it really worked).

All of a sudden it all clicked and by the third session I was scraping the knee slider at will :yo::yo::yo: what a great feelingR#?

It's funny the knee down thing never matters when you can't seem to do it but; fook me, it is so much FUN when you can :-:

Never had a problem scraping the pegs TS, had to take the hero blobs off the Blackie 'cause the damn things hit the asphalt so early, it was the same on my 600's could scrape the pegs no problem just never could do the knee down thing and after 15 years trying  had pretty much resigned myself to never knowing the feeling.

fantastic - I'm a bit jealous mind, but well done you!

I've never had issues with the pegs getting down (well apart from this years lack of bottle - sorted now!) but have never managed the knee thing!!

brilliant - chuffed for you!! :yo:

I've managed to barely touch the tarmac with the hero blobs now and then, but I've never had my knee down (never tried seriously either). Mind you, I haven't been on any trackdays yet.

Is it possible to get your knee down before the hero blobs start scraping? In other words, is my lean angle sufficient to get my knee down provided that I start practicing on hanging further off the bike?

By the way, I'm using Pilot Power 2CT front and Pilot Road 2 rear. These tyres are fairly decent, aren't they? I presume I could remove the hero blobs and scrape the actual footpegs without worrying too much about the tyres losing their grip (once they are warmed up, and the roads are dry)..?
It would be very assuring and comforting to know that I could actually scrape my pegs (not just the hero blobs) and perhaps even the fairing with these tyres.

Getting my knees down sure would be FUN and a great party trick, but I'm not really that obsessed with it. I just want to improve my riding technique, and get rid of those chicken strips :yo:

Peg scraping on a bird is easy. Probably more satisfying than the odd bit of knee down. But as the fat one has said, peg removal is a fast track to a hospital bed.

If you trawl through the many posts here you will find that knee down will become easy. Its all about technique and confidence. Have a read through. But dont rush it, practise but dont force it. The day your knee touch's down will be when you least expecting.

Enjoy

So what you're saying is that it's relatively easy (once you've learnt it) to get your knee down WITHOUT SCRAPING THE PEGS..?

And are the Pilot Power 2CT and Pilot Road2 sticky enough for the job?

Pilot Powers ?
The sidewalls are not man enough I am afraid.. Having tried them at Donny a couple of months ago they started off great but VERY soon went squidgy and started to wander about. Came off the track i little unimpressed.. Went over to the Avon man and got a pair of my favorites back on ( just plain old ordinary Storms ) and proceeded to enjoy the last two sessions immensely..
Wish to feck I had not been tempted with the freebee Pilots as I wasted half a bloody day :bang:

You do not need sticky tyres on to get a knee down, almost any tyre will allow you to do that, but wearing through the fairing requires a certain amount of commitment and confidence in your bowlers !
