Although I started riding bikes at an early age I never got round to taking my test, as I joined the RN in 1974, got married in 1977, first child born 1978, second child born 1980 moved back up North in 1983, settled down and took my bike test in 1986.

The week after my 17th birthday 1976  I'd come off it in the week before and I was still suffering and the bike (CD 175) was even worst than me, I was surprised the examiner let me take the test on it.

1974, I think it was just after my Birthday in the September.

Round the block twice, bloke jumped out at me for the emergency stop. asked a couple of questions about road markings......... passed

Fell off on the way home being stupid. ( but no damage to the bike, just a bent ego. )

Bike test at 17. April 1974. Honda CB125s, XEE 850K. In the following summer I bought a Triumph 500 Daytona T100T, TJV 529J. Funny how I can remember my bike reg numbers but not cars.
Didn't get a car until I was 22.

1964. My grandparents bought me a Suzuki 50 for passing me O Levels. It had a windscreen so big that in a headwind, it just about stopped dead. Downwind, it acted like a spinnaker

1978, Thornton Heath, Sarf London. What a laugh compared to todays test. Had an argument with the tester about use of mirrors on a right turn. The one right turn where he could actually see me. He said I never used my mirrors to check behind me, I pointed out that I had actually removed the mirrors from the bike so that I had to look behind me, and he then said "oh, good point, always check behind you." Which I still do.

Oh yeah, reminds me. What did I pass my test on? A Honda CD175, Blue in colour. I actually saw one the other day and I was shocked at how tiny they were. Also an RD200 and a Honda CB400f. Midget bikes!

Hi Derek

think I'm getting a bit old for a real fast black one, think I'll stick to this sluggish blue one til I get rid of my 6 points!

1969 passed with a duff clutch, stalled it a couple of times but in them days you just rode round the block a few times and luckily the examiner wasn't in sight each time I stalled it at the junctions. 8l1nd
