I take it you followed them around while they shopped, and you registered their speed on an approved device, and knew where they were going and why.
The one I saw parked on the white zig-zags at 6 Ways (Birmingham) came out of the chinese takeaway with what looked like a carrier bag of takeaway food and a smaller bag of prawn crackers.

Actions like this erode public support and I doubt that even the most ardent supporter or apologist can defend it.
The three police range Rovers going past the M6 traffic jam today via the hard shoulder probably didn't do the police's image any good as they simply turned into the 'Works Unit' to presumably go off shift. Why should they wait like the rest of us?

Probably because if they were going off shift then they would have to have a de-brief [if there were any incidents] or they would have had to hand over to their reliefs or maybe they had several hours of paperwork ahead of them which would most likely exceed their shift times.

Never assume

you miss my point: they were using blue lights & travelling along the hard shoulder, clearly not to an emergency. Those of us who also had places to go would be pulled for doing the same thing, no matter how important our destination.

My point was that actions like this undermine support. I notice the chinese takeaway episode wasn't defended.

The issue with the hard shoulder isn't clear, I've had to blue light back to Police stations for a variety of completely legitimate reasons. I wouldn't defend the take away incident because it's indefensible. Make a note of the number and report it. Police officers have an exemption to parking restrictions including zig zags but only for a Police purpose, NOT getting a take away.

food & uniform .....

FYI, it's against regulations for any Police officer to do ANY shopping whilst in uniform, period. You can't even buy a sarnie whilst in uniform ...... but who gives a fook, I don't ........

Really Karlos, what regulation is that?

My point is that the perception will undermine support.

Make a note of the number and report it.
I (like many others) have a genuine fear of reprisals from his colleagues. It goes with their undermined image in the public eye and is reinforced by a few anecdotes some police friends have told over the years.

Also on the subject of police mistakes, it was once official policy (Northamptonshire police, I think) to deliberately target those whom the courts had 'let off' by finding them not guilty when the police 'knew' they were guilty. Contempt of court /conspiracy to pervert the course of justice/ malfeasance in office, anyone? They then had the audacity to publicise the new policy on the radio! This supports the theories about reprisals that others suggested before me.

Rovinghawk, I completely accept your point about perception, after all perception is reality to the perceivor. However, you can't not use the blue lights just in case!

I have to say that I've been in the Police for nearly 19 years and have personally never heard of the kind of victimisation you describe, but there are 140,000 cops and some of them will always let themselves and their colleagues down. The issue is how to eradicate them if people don't report it. It becomes a vicious circle.

Can't comment on the Notts policy coz I don't know anything about it. However it wouldn't in law amount to contempt, perverting the course of justice or malfaesance but certainly wouldn't do any good for relations with the courts etc.

You say it's well known if you report officers for apparently committing offences whilst driving you will be the subject of some form of vendetta. Well known by whom???? Lots of peeps outside an organisation looking in and suddenly becoming experts in how it's run and what happens if you do this or that, and all coppers are bad and if people speak out in the organisation their career is ruined, and bl4hbl4h bl4hbl4h bl4hbl4h  , when really most people know Jack about it. I think I know how the building trade works, you know all builders are dodgy, I think I know how haulage companies work, you know all drivers go way over their hours and drive dangerously, and are all fat lard arses.
I don't really have a clue about them, I just think I do.
I think you have lost the plot. Police officer comes out of a shop with ciggies and a news paper erm! think he has been shopping. I'm doing 30 and a police car overtakes me, I think I can judge his speed to be well over the limit. SO, if you don't have anything sensible to add to the discussion, shut up.

Incorrect.

There are many police officers working in control rooms .. and quite a few in nottinghamshire control room. Also as in most forces a control room sgnt and inspector..

Not as many as people would like to think. They are'nt even called Control rooms anymore, in the brave new world they are called Resource Deployment Centres!...nice.

Really, here's a joke for you then,
A friend of mine attended a routine domestic call to back up unarmed officers.
On arrival both officers were knelt in the street in execution style poses while a male covered them with a rifle, he took off over the gardens when the other unit arrived but was headed into a housing estate where lots of public were out and about, due to this the other unit did'nt spend time donning protective gear but immediately gave chase.
As a result my friend was shot in the head and killed.
Try as I might, I can't see the joke in that.
It's very sad when someone is killed especially in the course of their duty. People join the armed forces and get sent into war zones. It's a case of you know the risks when you join up. Police officers and prison officers should be better protected from the thugs who carry out these terrible crimes but don't ask me how. Unfortunately these terrible incidents dont change the fact that there are a lot of "cowboys" in the police and they need weeding out.

Yes, quite right. If you lived closer to me I'd invite you round for a chat and a drink. Who knows, we might even discuss bikes.fl4g71

Ooh hit a bit of a nerve have we??? w;;v
Had you stated what he/she had come out with we would have known.
Not questioning his speed, or the fact that he had the audacity to overtake you, guess you followed him to his journeys end to find out why? Don't tell me....he was quaffing donuts and on the phone as he went by??
I did'nt realise it was a discussion......just a general slagging off period.

PS. If it helps I'm not actually talking, just typing. Hopefully your not sat there talking to the 'puter, 'cause if you are....the plot i've lost may have been found by you. :-0)

Exactly. thanks.
However, you can't not use the blue lights just in case!
My point was more along the lines of why don't they wait like the rest of us? The fact that they have things to do doesn't cut the mustard with the public as we have things we'd like to do but can't cut up the hard shoulder to get to meetings/clock off, etc.

I........have personally never heard of the kind of victimisation you describe
I have personally been on the receiving end, or would have been had it not been for the solicitor friend who read them the riot act after they threatened to arrest her for intervening.

Can't comment on the Notts policy coz I don't know anything about it.
I think it was notts- I was in Corby when I heard the radio interview.

but certainly wouldn't do any good for relations with the courts etc.
Or the public. That's the thrust of my argument.

I think you might be the sort of character a lot of people are talking about. And yes, I do know where the overtaking officer was going. His parents live oposite me and what a surprise, when I arrived home, there he was, parked outside. Now stop being a prat.

Have sat here and read all of these posts with great interest. Have been in the police 21 years, mostly on traffic. My choice to pick people up off the road, go and tell relatives at 3am their loved ones are dead etc. My partner works on child abuse, would like to see the crtics have sit and listen to a 7 year old tell them about their relative raping them and then have to go and deal with the offender, but again her choice

What really gets me, and I dare say all the other boys in blue on here, is the amount of people who think they know it all and know the job that all coppers do and how to do it.maybe I should turn up at their workplace on a Monday morning and tell them how to do their job, see how they like it!!

Yes we do go shopping at work, but when we work shifts and there is no canteens as they are all shut to make way for offices, we have no option but to go to and buy food at a supermarket etc.

Cheers Tank, I've finished therapy now and have got over the fact that Charlie left on the bus without me despite there being 50 spare seats!! Encourage your lad, still a great job and one I'm proud to do. If he needs any advice when the time comes let me know.
