....... but is the police "culture" one of "turning a blind eye" or is there active discouragment and warnings not to provide information to the press............
I think it's a question of "when it suits them" Gerry.

As you've probably noticed yourself when dealing with the press/media on some occasions they go into a kind of "secrecy mode" where they talk in riddles and on other occasions do the opposite and actively use them as a tool.

If there is any official hard and fast rule they certainly don't adhere to it, afaics :dunno:

Can I suggest we let this one drop away now folks .......

I've just read back through it a bit and I wouldn't like to think we're having a go at the guys on here who happen to be coppers......

I mean Rhino's fair game .man8um .. and Murt used to be d34l ...... but I don't like to think they feel they've got to justify all coppers to be on here......

The force I work for has a media liasion person (and I guess so does every other one in the country). It's so that there's a single point of contact, and if there is a victim there details can be kept confidential until such time as relatives have been informed.

It's not AFAIK a "secrecy" culture. More, looking after the people we "serve". I'm sure if anyone on here, or a member of your family were injured, or God (for those of you who believe in one) forbid, killed, you wouldn't want to hear it on the Six O'Clock news or read it in the Sun?

I'm sure you'd much rather be told face to face, than by some piece of paper, or some Joe Bloggs on the idiot box.

And having delivered a few too many sympathy messages as they are now called, I sure as hell know which I'd rather.

Yes, sometimes, officers do things that will wind you or even I up. But please don't forget a few things.

1) We are human, we breath and bleed just like you.

2) We join the job from all walks of society. Just take a look around.

3) Not everyone one likes us. Kinda like Marmite, you either like it or you don't!

And if I deal with anyone, I honestly try and deal with them how I'd like to be dealt with, there have been a few exceptions, but that bloke was trying to beat the shit outta me!!

Hell you could pick on Fire Brigade, Ambulance staff,The AA, civil servants (they're the sods that keep putting taxes up!)

As you've "chipped in" I'd just make the point that as far as I can see that's exactly what folks want ........

My personal view is that the police should not make any detailed statements at all to the press ..... just the old "no comment" .. "following lines of enquiry" .... etc

Tell 'em to take a running jump .. the press will do/say what thye want anyone .. stop feeding them.

If it's a very, very high profile case you might justify a press briefing . but even then keep it simple and basic.

Trying to use/brief/keep in with the press is a no hoper .. it doesn't work and doesn't achieve anything.

I totally agree.

The press will always make the story sound good to suit their reader/viewer base.

Regarding the press how many of you still believe that Wakefield Prison officers along with New hall, Wetherby & Leeds went out on strike last week?

On the day in question I was working until 4.30pm & we were informed at about 3.30 pm that we may be walking to the gate as two members of staff had been suspended as a result of what basically boiled down to pillow talk , when 4.30 came around I along with my colleagues who were on the same shift went home, when I got in I put the BBC teletext news on & oo and behold we were on strike, so I switched to ITV & they had the same story then when the news came on they were reporting that we had gone on strike, believe me only three prisons went on strike that day for a short period of time Lindholme, Moorlands and Everthorpe, so where the so called trustworthy newshounds got their info from I am stumped, there has been no notification as far as I am aware from any of the media stations retracting their statements, so do we still believe everything the press throw at us?
