Errr. yes to some ( and have done ) but some you cannot really do without certain basic items..

For instance, skydiving becomes more sort of ground plumeting without a chute ! :-:

Police officers are issued with anti stab vests, some choose to wear them some choose not to, everycall they make is a potential life threatener, but the decision is their own, they way up the chances of a situation turning nasty relying on their own verbal skills to de-escalate a situation, sometimes they make the wrong call, most times they don't

Saw a right dick head on a red bird going north on the M5 today about where the M42 exit is, would have been about 3 ish. Came past in the outside lane in a Tshirt and no gloves. Just cant understand riders not using gloves or jacket. There is no reason these days with well vented gear available cheaply.

Well hope he's not a member on here. Because someone would have to look after him when he had no hands

what do you lot think.

Bollocks......

People riding in jeans and tee shirts in hot weather know better!

They never go scratching.

They never get knoced off by cagers becuase their always noticed (as twats usually)

Even if they do go down it's a well known fact that hot tarmac doesn't hurt as much as the cold stuff ;-)

When I was 5 year old, my brother and just came back from the neighbour who let us watch an episode of Zorro on their television, one where he was jumping from a house of some sort. So, back at the flat, seventh storey, we thought, hey let's do what Zorro did - and then we were fighting for who'd be the first one to jump. Luckily my mother heard us fighting, came and put us straight.
What am I trying to say? A choice which is not an informed choice is not a choice, it's a blind decision. My suggestion is to acquire knowledge before making choices - the following is a loose repost of something I wrote in a similar thread:
It is a fact that medical knowledge is highly specialised and as a result most people have only a very limited knowledge of the body and how it can be hurt.
How, for instance, landing with your unprotected spine on the curb even at slow speed will quite likely put you in a wheelchair (or a bed, or a coffin) for the rest of your life... Or, without being that dramatic, how your arm will quite likely become a useless piece of meat if you land on your shoulder without protection at 30mph. That means no more riding a bike, but you might like the idea of a trike...
Above are two of the options which will help you make an INFORMED decision - ask anyone working in A&E for more evidence on damages, or your local neurologist/ostheopath/surgeon etc for more physiological/orthopedic/neurological info.
Question to those who don't wear protection: do you expect others to pay the bill for fixing you or would you accept to sell your house and your possessions in order to pay for your medical bills if you fall off due to your own mistake? Why would other people pay for you playing russian roulette? Free, wild and against nanny state, but happy for nanny to pay if we fuck up, or picking up the bill in case we fuck up? Double standards or taking responsability for our actions?
You might think that you'll go down only if someone put you down and therefore will pay for you being rebuilt/cared for... In which case you are delusional and nothing can be done for you until you decide to address this psychological issue of yours.

Now on the subject of smoking: I smoke, not much but still, I smoke. When I buy a pack of fags, with the taxes attached to the price tag I am also buying the medical insurance in case I suffer from anything fag-related - AND I am subsidising the NHS as well, so be thankful to me and all smokers, as not all smokers suffer from smoke-related illnesses, yet all smokers subsidise the NHS, so if you fall off your bike due to your mistake and don't wear protection your skin graft/wheel chair will be on me. You're welcome. w;;v

So Pierre, am I not paying for my own medical treatment through the taxes I pay through my employment? the more overtime I work the more tax I pay, if I am knocked off my bike through no fault of my own, I am charged a fee by the hospital, yet if I go out and get pissed out of my skull and collapse an ambulance will pick me up take me to hospital where I will be treated then discharged,

You are correct when you say an uninformed choice is no choice, that is why as parents it it is sometimes a case of do as I say and not as I do.

As for the smoking, that is your choice, I choose not to smoke, but if I am in a room and someone lights a cigarette then they are imposing their choice on me giving me no choice.

It doesn't quite work like that Pierre mate - you should check up on the fine points as there is a range of treatments that you would not recieve!!

For example, the NHS does not make available lung transplant surgery to a smoker suffering from lung cancer, whereas that treatment would be offered to someone who doesn't smoke.

Saw that on a documentary a little while ago where they followed the deterioration of smoker dying from lung cancer in his final few months. His treatment in an NHS hospital was limited to providing care and comfort only, and it was based simply on who should take priority of the availablr resources.

I know that my argument could turn against me with someone saying, you choose a dangerous activity (biking) therefore you pay for your medicals if you crash... this argument has its flaws, just as 'I've got the right to do whatever I want' argument. You of course pay for your medicals (albeit crap ones with amazing delays and the rest) with the taxes you pay - but if one crashes on its own without having done what he could have done to protect himself, why would one expect others to pick up the bill? We all accept that wearing a lid is part of biking, so we all accept that some protection is necessary - what level of protection is the question. you're saying 'through no fault of my own', I didn't - if it's someone else's fault they pick up the bill. I just don't think that we can moan and whinge about the nanny state on one hand, and then ask nanny to pay when we fuck up - same for getting drunk, ODed, etc - taking responsability for our actions, I'm all up for it.

Or, why the state tells us to do things we don't want to do? I am not for nanny state at all, just pointing out that an argument can be used both ways.
At the end of the day people who speak about choices with no knowledge are kidding themselves.
I see chavs on scoots all the time wheeling about in traffic, teeshirts trainers and shorts, other day a chav binned his scoot after fucking up his twat wheelie at not very fast per hour, had just rash on legs and arms and was crying like a little girl - he was showing off one minute before thinking he was invicible, surely never felt pain in his short life... wait until he has a serious crash (and he will), he'll learn what pain is and maybe then reassess his invicibility status...

Then that is really unfair as we pay for our care through taxes imposed on ciggies - on top of the NIC I pay!!! So, I will import cigarettes from other countries where tax is minimal, except that is a crime punishable by simultaneous hanging and balls crushing in UK!

The principal of witholding treatment on the basis that someone is being foolish or careless I feel has flawed logic. Who decides what is in this category and how. Many things (smoking) were at one time not only acceptable but there was a societal pressure to smoke. So how can it be fair to now withold treatment - particularly when someone has been paying taxes of any description.

Should the nude skydiver be denied treatment 'cause they landed in the nettles?

Many illnesses could somehow be tracked back to a failure on the part of the person to protexct themselves. Lets see, anything related to obeisity, broken limbs etc from any activity where inury has previously been experienced (football, rugby, boxing, motor/cycle racing, horse riding......), infections from failure to follow proper hygene practices.

Free will surely means the choice of being foolish or not, informed or not. Once someone starts to impose some sort of rules then free will starts to become eroded?

A friend of mine came off his scooter at about 20mph wearing trousers, shoes and a padded jacket. He was off work for almost 12 months and had skin grafts from his backside to his calf. There's some VERY nasty photos of his leg if you need them.

Almost a year and a half later he's about to under-go a knee replacement operation, and if that fails to work he might have his leg amputated just above the knee.

Needless to say I told him he should have worn protective clothing, even if he would look stupid on a scooter He doesn't look so clever now either.

Whatever other people do I've always worn the right clothing. I've had a few off's in bad weather, sliding down roads with a CBR6 on my leg, getting my elbow down. I grazed my arm once where a zip failed, and bruised my foot.

It's your own choice (apart from helmet) and your own body.

A little quote from the last news I had from him:
*After I had the metalwork taken out, I got a bad infection in the wound which leaked constantly.
After a few days, my leg had locked at 90degrees, and wouldn't move at all.
One of the Orthos inserted two needles under my kneecap (without anaesthetic) to drain a lot of the liquid that had accumilated under it, which was a lovely red/yellow/green colour, and had little bits of ground up bone in it.
I was re-admitted to hospital, where it was discovered I had mild blood poisoning, and after I was operated on to flush out my knee (a further three (little) scars on my leg, one for a camera to be inserted and two for the tubes to flush it), I was on constant IV antibiotics for another week.
When I was finally released, I was still on over 40 tablets a day to try to keep the infection at bay.

**I went in to have the metalwork done on Feb 16th, and should have been returning to work two weeks later at most.
I ended up being off for seven weeks.

It is the law in this country that all drivers and passengers in cars have to wear a seat belt, no choice, the law, however if someone has an accident and is knocked unconscious, and the result of the accident is that the seat belt release is unaccessable and that person dies as a result, are the government to blame for putting them in such a position.

was told recently of someone who litterally lost their face, as in, no nose, no mouth, no jaw, and the rest - she was looking all pretty and trendy on her scooter with a cromwell until then, mind... That was her choice init!

As for giving health care according to your choices, as pointed out by Rob it's already in place, and also for obese people. Ginormous elephants who need treatment, well, some treatments just won't be given to them - logic is that for someone else to take care of them they should take care of them first. Girlfriend is a trainee ostheopath, they sometimes get fooking huge people popping in to get treated because they have pain in their joints and everywhere, well a word to the fat arse brigade: lay off the pie for a bit, your knees will be thankful - or stop whinging and ask other people to sort you out when you do nothing in that direction and stuff your face all day long instead! w;;v

And for some other dangerous activities well special insurance is compulsory init... Seriously duck, of course the argument isn't black and white but you can see my point about taking responsability for our own actions and the hypocrisy to tell the nanny state to fuck off only to go cry and ask us to take care of us afterwards - and about getting information in order to make informed choices and not blind decisions8l1nd%$fan:beer:

I don't think it's done on the basis fairness in that respect. I don't think they're saying a smoker will not receive the same treatment BECAUSE he smokes, as such.

It's a simple question of priorities. There's not enough resources to treat everybody for everything....... so they have to allocate. In the case of a lung transplant waiting list that excedes the available resources, they have to adopt a method of allocation. I suppose it's fair to the individuals who have not contributed so damagingly to their condition that they take priority over someone who has.

Somehow they have to make the decision of who gets what, however stark and cold it may appear.
