Well I may as well join in as evety other fecker has :bang:
I mentioned earlier that I didn't look at the post 'cause of the warning .. still the case now :yo:
I now know from the discussion here broadly what was in it ..... without the graphic detail of actually seeing it I can cope with that ... I've seen much that I'd rather forget during my life and still would not wish to view the post.
However, there are some important (I think) points which have cropped up here in the discussion.
1. Should someone be free to post this
... Hell yes for all sorts of reasons. We judge others and form opinions based on their actions. This posting is such an action and folks can judge it based on their value judgements. To some a hero to others a plonker .... but of course either way that's the individuals' opinion based on thier own set of values....... doesn't make 'em right or wrong - much the same as making the post in the first place.
2. Moderating The Forum.
My earlier mention of the cross forum Bob (I did resist from mentioning Black Adder although it was very tempting!!) was made in jest as a result of the timing of Lumpys recent foray........ however ........
I find it interesting that "bob" finds the moderating in this forum similar to the others when JAWS makes clear that this forum is broadly unmoderated. This suggests to me that it's simply "bob's" view that what he sees here is a bit riske/bit much at times but broadly OK...... in other words can fit his value judgements.
3. My View (personal of course).
This all reminds me very much of what complete freedoms are....... the right to be able to do what we want moderated only by our personal view of how restrained we should we be.
Also the famous line of "I disagree violently with what you say but will fight to the death for your right to say it"
We live in a world where what years ago were considered natural basic freedoms are now fast vanishing ...... along with them I's suggest also vanishes the ability to apply "common sense" to moderate those freedoms.
We have generations coming through now who are so regulated that free will, choices ... and more importantly judgement and excercising of responsibility for one's actions are a fast disappearing ability.
On that basis I shudder for what the world will be like in 20 years time :violin:
As far as this forum goes I feel JAWS has it broadly right, along with jump up and punch yer eyes out approach of the members that happens when someone oversteps the mark ......
There are things on here which I sometimes find offensive -I've turned off the sigs as I didn't want my family to see some of the offensive crap that appears as one of my PC's is in the living room where all can see it when I'm on line - shame as I also miss the erudite along with the crap.
I exercise my right to ignore them ...... I don't need "rules" to tell me what to do.
But then I recognise that what I feel is crap might well be the height of sophistication, mental ability and wit to someone else. I don' seek to impose my values on others ... after all they are my values - so mitts off 'em.
I can only recall one time where I've been "offended" enough to argue a point on here about something which I found offensive ... that was a long time ago and was when we had the discussion about the faking of 9/11 .. which I found offensive as friends of mine died on the a/c involved. To many others it was nothing but a discussion of something newsworthy and to others a chance for a wind up.
Again depends on your personal values .......
So publish and be dammed I say .... even if I find it offensive - as the alternative offends my idea of freedom :yo:
