My big bugger in the living room went futt and I bought a replacement from Comet.
It is a 42" LCD jobby by LG that was on special offer ( ?420, no deposit and nowt to pay till next year which is bloody handy at the moment ! )

But !!!

What a pile of poo it has turned out to be.
98% of the time it is great, but if there is any real big fast action it goes all blockey ( like a freeview digi box with a duff signal )

Soooo, what type of telivision would YOU buy ? ( and no, don't just say NOT THE SAME AS ME !!! LOL !! )

Now John - You know you get what you pays for! That why I brought your HID lights instead of the half price version off of FleaBay. Yours do what they should ie work!

The reason your LCD was the price it was is that its got less inside than say a Panasonic LCD which IMHO is one of the best pictures you can get capturing fast movement and colour really well. Yes there about ?600 for a 36 inch but as Im allways telling the wife...

Wait for it......

Its not the size thats important but the quality!! ;-0))

any 40" plus LCD will suffer with this although some are worse than others. Its to do with the bitrate freeview is transmitted at. Some channels using low bitrates will be much worse than others - try comparing footy on BBC1 with footy on ITV2. It is not so noticeable on smaller TV's and plasmas don't suffer so much but I reckon the can look a bit smudged/ cartoon like as they apply some kind of smoothing / interpolation to counter the prob.

Best solution is to go HD but expensive from sky, limited on freesat and not yet here for us on freeview.

ok 1st off most large Tv's are good as most of the screens are made by only a company or two .Panasonic are one of the few companies that make their own ,where as most others buy them in then put their name on them
as for the blocking thats to do with the LCD if you were watching a plasma and a lcd side by side then the plasma would be beter for fast sports.
most folk now go for HDTV and if i was getting another i would check to make sure that it had more than 1 HD port at the back then you can link more periferals in to it and get the quality

If it does actually go blocky and the picture breaks up with muticouloured squares or similar its a poor signal and not the fault of the TV and you need to get your aerial checked. If it looks like a crap youtube vid fullscreen on your monitor then it is more to do with the bitrate transmitted on SD freeview and having a monster screen for it to fill.

Not really complaining about what I have as yup, you get what you pay for and this is only for what is really my office.. Woman has her 'big one ( plasma ) in the conservatory and that is the main room we live in ( I also have the 90" projector set up in there )

I was asking what others have bought thats all :p

BTW, this is nowt to do with freeview.. I do not use freeview at all even though it is built in.. the break up happens no matter what the input, Sky HD, blueray, or whatever ..

There is something wrong if it looks that way with blueray - unless you are 6" fromn the screen. might be worth tinkering with the settings. AVForums is a good place. My sony looked rough out of the box but is not bad now.

Apparently what I am getting is perfectly normal for the model I have.. Looks like it was just old stock so proly first generation..

As I said, not really whinging about it cos most of the time it does not show, only on high speed action..

Was more interested in what others have bought and are happy with :p

Grocer, believe me, in this house size really does matter !!!!!! :-0)

Take it back mate,, dont care what you paid for it,, it really shouldnt be blocky at all,, i couldnt live with it thats for sure.
I have a full 1080p Sharp LCD with an Amstrad Sky HD box ( which broadcasts in 1080i) but the pic is superb on HD ,, doesnt matter how close you are to the TV,, pic is the same, it has 2 HDMI ports, 1 for the HD box & one for the PS3,, 1080p blu ray DVD movies are terrific,, I put it all through a Denon Amp & Kef speakers,, had it 2 years now & I am still over the moon with it. I to thought blocks only appeared if signal breaks up via ariel moving on a very windy day, we get it sometimes in the caravan.:-0)

Just had a reply from LG who have said more or less 'they all do that sir'

Very early LCD technology.. By the tone of the mail they were surprised I had found a new one to buy !

I will contact Comet and see what they say as it MAY be possible to sort out something ......

But my original question still sits..

LCD, LED, Plasma ??

OLED if you have the cash but they don't come much bigger than 11" at the moment!

LED Backlit LCD now giving plasma a run for their money with SD signal although plasma still has the edge but more HD coming via sky/fresat/freeeview in time. With HD signal I would now go LCD over plasma - cheaper to run as well. Plasmas also have less of a lead in rendition of blacks now as well.

We have just got a Toshiba Regza 32 inch tv and I'm not overly impressed as it is quite blurry whenever there is movement on screen.

Got it for free so I can't really complain. I think we might shell out for Sky HD.

Evesham .....

I bought an Evesham 32" HD LCD 3 years ago for a mere ?350 back then ....... no wonder they went bankrupt flogging them at that price, the quality is fantastic, I have my Sky HD box and a Sony DVD surround system with upscaling plugged in, no blur, clean 'n' crisp, incredible really. You just can't get them any more ........ :violin:

Evesham stuff's brilliant isn't it Karlos! (they now trade as Geemore Technology Ltd by the way having gone bust)

If I really HAD to buy a screen today, my money would go on a wafer thin Samsung LED, but I'd wait until the first quarter of next year if I could. The LED is impressive from what I've seen with a standard def freeview input (which is where the old CRT's beat any modern screens hands down - native resolution is closer to that of the source so no software trickery needed which is where the motion blur and blockiness comes from), and simply bonkers when hooked up to a Bluray spinner

I love my 40" Sony Bravia for watching flicks and gaming, but the freeview performance is embarassing both using the inbuilt tuner, a seperate STB and also PlayTV on PS3 which upscales (supposedly)

Something to bear in mind when buying a screen right now is that (a) you won't be able to buy a plasma in 6 months, and (b) Freeview HD soft launched a few days ago off of two transmitters - it's only broadcasting text right now, but if you want HD channels for free with no contract then this is worth waiting for. Unfortunately, the current tuner(s) in all set top boxes, TV's with Freeview build in, HD recorders etc is DVB-T. Freeview HD will require a DVB-T2 tuner of which there are none currently available in the UK. So as of early next year, a change of equipment will be needed if you want Freeview that looks good on a modern screen. I'd expect the latest screens to come with inbuilt Freeview HD from very early 2010

Don't let the shop monkeys tell you that any screen today will show Freeview HD, they won't without shelling out dough on a new STB

Of course Freesat's a great option if you want to save money, dump Sky and utilise the dish
