ok i take back my last post as just done the maths and its 25mpg which does sound bad if not caning it!

Have you checked the choke operation and made sure it does go off on the carbs and maybe check the disk isnt scorching hot after a ride as you thought they may be binding?

Be interested to hear the out come too p0pc0rn41

Use your Bird for short journeys, and expect 27 MPG due to the gas guzzling choke !, Esp. the EFI Bikes !

Hi..Great site
I bought my bird a month ago and after risers and lowered seat i am totally in love with her except for the fact that she guzzles juice. 74 miles return for just over 13 litres can't be right. The dealer i bought it from has looked at it and can't find anything wrong. It is a '98 carb model with 36,000 on clock. Starts first turn every time even on coldest mornings.I got just under 100 miles to last full tank.I don't thrash it and never been over 75 mph yet.Any ideas please. I have noticed that occasionally the brakes will bind a little at random (not lock up) and have to kick rear brake pedal to free it up but that may not have anything to do with it. Any help will be appreciated....Cheers ...STEVE
I have a 98 Carb Bird, I get approx 172 miles before the reserve light comes on. I reckon 40+ per gallon, so yours should do the same. I recommend you fill right to the top, do 100 miles then refill the tank - This will give you your true consumption afterall, your gauge could be wrong.

Hello Peeps.......Just got bike back and shop guy says he couldn't find anything wrong.Says he drained tank an put 1 litre in and did just over 6 miles. So i picked it up and filled her up to top .When i got home i parked up and after about 10 mins i noticed a puddle underneath. It was dirty petrol dripping from somewhere but haven't a clue where from. Do you think it's coz i filled her up to top and it's comming through an overflow or else where could it be comming from? :dunno:

Should find a rubber pipe hanging down, now doubt it will be wet with petrol.

My EFI only returns 29-30mpg but its only used by & large for work which is 7 miles each way. But it makes going to work fun :yo:

After an hour of pissing around i sussed it.It's comming fom the tap but where it's bolted to tank.So i presume that the gasket needs renewing. This must have happened when the "mechanic" took the tank off he may have put pressure on the tap and caused it to leak.So it's got to go back again tomorrow.Maybe this is why my mileage was down .. i.e. if it was previously leaking even slightly? So for now the tank is upside down in the back garden coz tank is full and haven't got enough containers to drain it.Funny though i am a comparative novice at this but a proper bike tech didn't notice it s04pb0x6

Maybe this will help

There is alot of things that can cause poor performance. For instance changing the exhaust and not changing the jets in the carb. You may also be producing a lot of friction causing drag. This can come from warn wheel bearings, axles not being greased, brakes draging, and low tire pressure. You may also look into having your carbs cleaned as you might have a clogged jet. Also check you plugs to make sure all cyclinders are receiving fire properly. As mentioned before, you may also have a clogged or dirty airfilter and or fuel filter. Also check your oil level: too much oil will bog the engine creating more crankcase pressure causing the engine to require more energy to produce the same amount of power. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I typed a long reply to this last night and then the laptop died :bang:

I'll summarise - take the whole tap assembly off your self and clean it all inc the petrol filter gauze. Clean the rubber seals and you may cure the leak.

I had a petrol leak but only when the engine was running - it was coming from the carb overflow pipes as grit would occasionally block the float fill valves and hence the overflow. I fitted some vw mk1 petrol golf filters 191201511a ,also use the vw clips to fit them. change them every 12 months ( cheap as a buggie) no fuel pump on carbed b bird so thats not a problem. The filters might feel a bit loose on the petrol pipe but do up the clips and all is fine now!

good luck with yours

My first Bird was a carb'd one.. keep it at a reasonable 80 to 90 and I got 50 mpg.. Just run the first tank full through on me new old one ( !! ) and got 49mpg on a run..

Around town they are no where near as good though

Oh and by Y2K one returned about 44mpg on a run just by way of comparison
