Hi..Great site
I bought my bird a month ago and after risers and lowered seat i am totally in love with her except for the fact that she guzzles juice. 74 miles return for just over 13 litres can't be right. The dealer i bought it from has looked at it and can't find anything wrong. It is a '98 carb model with 36,000 on clock. Starts first turn every time even on coldest mornings.I got just under 100 miles to last full tank.I don't thrash it and never been over 75 mph yet.Any ideas please. I have noticed that occasionally the brakes will bind a little at random (not lock up) and have to kick rear brake pedal to free it up but that may not have anything to do with it. Any help will be appreciated....Cheers ...STEVE

Welcome Pudie

May I suggest you change your font. Tis considered rude to shout! Can't help with your problem though it does sound very thirsty. Dragging back brake won't help. Like hauling an anchor along the road!

With all due respect.. i am only using a font as supplied by the forum i.e ariel black and have taken the size up a little to make it a little easier for all mole like longsited people like myself to read as i find the default size and font a little difficult to read. As i understand ..USING CAPITOLS THIS WAY IS REGARDED AS SHOUTING. So please forgive me for trying to make it easier for the older spectacle wearing generation of the forum and may i apologise for the abuse of your healthy young ears. very sorry sir

With an EFI model I expect around 160ish per tank ('till reserve) ... that can drop on mad runs but not usually to less than 120 ish....

EFI does have a slightly biger tank but would guess this is offset by the carb version usually being a tad better on fuel consumption.

I'd certainly suggest pulling the calipers off, pads out and cleaning up everything. Also for the rear check that it can slide cleanly, if it's been sitting for a while and/or not kept clean before it might be sticking.

Somethings sure not quite right with that fuel consumption ... start with the easy stuff......

Oh ... and welcome to the site :yo:

w;;vPudie welcome

Agree with Duck & Dive anything 120 to 150 + is good although very rarely reach 150 unless I'm out in the wilds and forgotten to fill up.
Work your way through the easy ones and if it doesnt help ask again

Thanks for all the help boys.I should get my bird back tomorrow after the guy in garage has taken her out to see if there is any improvement. My last bike was a yammy xvs1100a which is a v twin.I got it new and it did a regular 42-44 mpg.I would be happy with 36-40 from the blackbird but don't know if this is poss even though it's the carbed model. The yammy was heavier too? Would the fact that it's 10 years old and done 36,000 miles be significant?:yo:

My '97 carbed Bird gets a fairly consistent 45-46mpg except when really pushing on, so it does sound like yours is not running right. Blocked air filters seem to be one source of poor mpg on these though. Or maybe the choke's stuck on?

Its the same model as mine and that returns an average 140 miles to every 16 or 17 litres(Medium pace)

In the meantime welcome to the site

Get around 42 to a gal, and the throttle is twisted more than a mp caught chained to a bed post with pink fluffy hancuffs wearing leapod skin knickers and matching bra whilest being whiped by his mistress, who yaps on about family values. or to put it another way another way 110 - 120 before the fule light comes.

AT LAST! A man of intellect and taste.

And if you're going to Hereford, you simply must take a look at Dinasaw. Stand by the Pizza place on Blueschool Street, walk parallel to the road past the pub and go down the alley beside the butchers after crossing the side street. It's like walking back into the 60s.

Generally/average I get 150 to red warning light. The carb version is better for fuel than the injection, hence they increased the tank size on injection models.

Also, with 36k miles on yours its just about run in...seriously.

If you want a very very experienced BIRD bod to chat to or for bits/servicing contact JAWS motorcycles...

Hi mate and welcome

I think the BB holds nearer the 20 ltr mark or above so 74 miles for 13 ltrs doesnt sound that bad. Ive had less than 90 miles when having fun bl4hbl4h

I get about 120 miles for 16 litres, normally still have the last two blocks lit up on my fuel gauge. Meaning i've probably still got another 4 or 5 litres left in there. Changed the air filter not long ago and i think it did actualy help.

Do you know the bikes history ?

If not,
1. Check valve clearances
2. Balance carbs
3. Change air filter

whilst it's in bits give it a oil and filter change to put your mind and rest !

I could break 200 miles to a tank when I had a carbed one, a little less on the fuel injection, cat. exhausted one.
