Ive finally decided to give stopping smoking a go. :yo:

Ive tried once before and only could manage a week c7u8

Ive invested in the patches and am determined to give this filthy habit up. This is the first day and im not quite sure how im gonna manage..............
I smoke 20-25 a day and i reckon im gonna find VERY difficult.
Just wondered if anyone can give me any tips on fidget management and i shall keep you updated....................................................................

Good luck to you Emma

Jan packed in when she was pregnant with Suzie (now 15, and a royal pain) I packed in just over 4 years ago when Jan said I could only have the blackbird if I stopped smoking as we couldnt afford it any other way...

Never looked back...although I still could murder one every now and again, but the craving soon passes....and I got a Blackbird too :yo:

Stick with it girl.

Loads of love to you & John. Hope to see you soon,

Cheers both,

Rolfy & Jan

When my wife gave up a few months ago she used the patches, but the doctor also gave her a plastic puzzle thingy that you just twiddle about with...(cue crude comments) it is actually made by nicquitin as it has their name plastered all over it. my wife smoked at least 40 cigs a day for nearly 30 years. I am actually trained in auricular accupuncture to help people cope with cravings, this involves having five small needles in various parts of your ears for forty minutes at a time, I used this method on my wife a couple of years ago but unfortunately it did not work on her, I think the main thing to remember is that patches, hynotism, accupuncture etc are only aids to stopping smoking there is only one cure and that is willpower, you have to want to stop, good luck, just think how much better you will feel when you succeed.

PS I have just got back from holiday so I don't know how you did with your test.. hope you passed

Good luck Emma - I gave up March 2002. Just picked a date and stopped. Definiately need the willpower. I used to get through nearly 20 a day - probably 30 a day at weekend. One of the things that helped me was to put the same amount of money I would be spending on cigs in a jar each day. Then spend it something I wouldn't normally have bought or couldn't afford.

Emma, you can get the patches on prescription from the doctors nowadays. It's a hell of a sight cheaper. Don't go for the 24 hour ones though they keep you awake at night, just reach for the patch when you wake up. I found putting them high up on the thigh (or even on the bum) best as they do leave a red mark.

Hunter had stopped smoking when he was ill 2 years ago, so I decided to do it when we went on holiday last year. After 3 days I wasn't even using the patches any more, no problems, then HE decided to start again (bloody idiot, he'd stopped for a year and had to force himself by starting with cigars!) and, of course, with him smoking around me, I started again. :bang: :bang: :bang:

All the very best for your attempt, but them patches is good

I`ll lend you HB if you like, he was great at stopping me from smoking, not sure what he did or said but as we`re both here and didn`t split up or kill each other it must have worked. Whatever you do don`t buy another packet ever, if you feel tempted to smoke you then have to crash one off someone and that tends to stop you from smoking cos you feel guilty.#

Good luck

When my Uncle gave up smoking, he used to pop a polo mint every time he got a craving for a ciggy, and having the packet to play with aswell, kept his hands occupied.

It worked for him, and he gave up after 40 years of smoking 40+ a day!!

ok, for a few weeks he ate a lot of polo mints, but it did the trick!

Best of luck,

and remember,

don't give up giving up. :yo:

The last time I packed up smoking was back in 1986. I added up how much it would save me if I quit for 12 months then went and got me a bank loan and bought a bike (its the Norton which I still own) and every time I fancied a ciggy I used to sod off over Saddleworth moor or the Snake for a good blast and kept telling myself I cant smoke and own the bike.

That was all the incentive I needed, I havn't smoked since

I am now 8 weeks into the no smoking thing..
I used the same method as I did years ago when I gave up for 2 and a 1/2 years..
Tell everyone the day your giving up.. That way you have a bit of motivation for not putting it off till the next day :p

I tried patches once.. did feck all for me but prolonged the agony !

I did have one smoke a day after my evening meal.. Did that for a couple of weeks.
It has the same effect as patches ( i.e a dribble of nicotene ) but in the end you get fed up with it and simply stop doing that one too !

There is no easy way.. and I dont care what anyone says, once a smoker always a smoker.. its like being an ex alchy.. Take it one day at a time !

Now, do we have any doctors on here as I have a serious and related question..

What is less healthy, smoking 10 to 15 fags a day, or ballooning to 18 stone and suffering stress almost every day ?

This really is a genuine question !

I tried it for a number of years from 18--24 but gave up overnight,, cannot abide it anymore. If i put one near my mush i'd :puke: ,, i stayed slim up until about 6 yrs ago when i began eating pizzas and things, smokers use the giving up as an excuse to binge eat hence the weight gain............coz they aint got anything to do with their spare hand..
I've been given up for over 10 yrs now and do not miss it 1 bit.

No, thats not right.. :t

Smoking supresses the appetite, and affects the tastebuds and smell, therefore, when you stop smoking, you feel hunger more and food tastes as it should taste............................... Whenever i felt hungry as a smoker, i had a cigarette, and the hunger diminished.
