Goodo Ian!

I have to say that I've just spent Xmas and new year in Scotland and, by chance, visited a couple or three pubs as you do  and it was nothing other than GREAT to be in a pub without smoke and without stinking clothes the next day. Roll on the British ban, it can do nothing but good for everyone, including the smokers.

It didn't seem to be a big deal to the smokers either - they were quite philosophical about nipping out for a fag so all the early shouting had soon evaporated it would seem.

Bit of a 'protest' mess on the pavement tho...

I hate it with a passion, my mum and dad both smoked and it wasn't until I moved out that I realised how much I stunk !! (still do but for other reasons!) Thye both died of smoking related ilnesses, but besides the health issue I just hate the smell, makes my eyes sting, clothes and skin smell and its just, wel, fukin horrible !! IMHO of course !!

It's been great the last 3 years we went to Ireland touring cos all the pubs were smoke free, then of course our wonderful Scottish lot brought it in last year so when we went to Yorkshire touring we (unfortunately!) stayed out of the smelly pubs and either drank outside, weather permitting, or took it back to the flat and got pissed there instead !

Now we've just planned this years tour down south after the 1st July, so we can not get into the pubs without stinkin like an ashtray afterwards !!

:yo:

I gave up smoking 7 years ago and couldn't so much smoke a fag as stick my head up my own bum now. I think the ban is a good thing and it's worked in Scotland so why not here. I absolutely hate the smell and can't wait to get home and change into clean clothes if I've been in a smoky place - yuk!

I think the smoking ban will hit some buisnesses hard, why not leave it to discreation and leave just a little bit more of our dwinderling liberty. I am an ex-smoker and dont give a toss if I'm in a smoking or nonsmoking pub.

So how did they go about policing this ban in Ireland and Scotland ??

ok for the city centre places with 'bouncers' etc but what does the average landlord do if say half a dozen hairy arsed bikers decide to light up in a pub where they dont employ such pillars of our society ?? Landord asks them not to smoke ... they tell him to fek off .. he calls the police ..they dont show because they are to busy.. he gets fined ?? how does it work ??
somebody with a grudge keeps phoning police to report people smoking in his place .. he gets fined, closed down ??????

all we will end up with is less places to do our socialising in, in the manner in which we choose..

It should be the choice of the proprietor wether he decides to run a smoking or non smoking establishment and the choice of the customers and staff wether they go in there or not...

It is just another excuse to take away our freedom of choice which is wrong. The political correctness adiction that is ruining our country is beginning to show the first signs on here .. and judging by some of the replies its already into its second phase... SCARY or what

Shoot all the 'PC' adicts and lets get back to reality before its to late...

sorry, i dissagree, it should be banned in public places.....a non smoker should be allowed to walk into a shopping centre / pub / restaurant etc without having to breath in someone elses second hand filth. if someone choses to smoke then that is their choice......it should not be publicly accepted that someone who does not smoke has to breath in that persons addiction.

how many adverts and health studies do smkers have to see that proves smoking kills/ affects health/ increases risk of cancers......... yet "some of you"
feckin whinge when the non smoking public rise up and say "feck off, im eating< i do not want to breath in your pollution to my air".
if your a smoker and wish to smoke then im all for that, that is freedon of choice. but dont tell me it is taking away your feckin rights if you sit in a public enclosed place and a rule is in place not allowing smoking. it is there for health reasons, not to target your individual right to pollute our air and our childrens air.....it is not a fecking conspiracy.......it is there to protect the health of the non smoking public. for fecks sake it's plastered all over your feckin fag packets that the shit kills, so why the feck should we not ask you to refrain from smoking in an enclosed public area ?
i bet you would be the first to complain if i moved next door and had a nuclear powered car, or large sattalite dishes all round the house emmiting harmful rays to you and your family.....it's exactly the same for non smokers.....
so please.....don't tell me they are taking away your rights...you have a home to smoke in, a car to smoke in....the open road to smoke in.......all they are asking is you do not force the general non smoking public / children to suffer from your addiction. personally i think it's fecking selfish of someone to smoke in a restaraunt / etc........ bvut history has shown it is all part of the pub scene to enjoy a pint and a fag, and i understand that, but that was before health studies proved that the habit kills, causes cancers and secdond hand smoke is just as harmful.
so try and see it in that persective and im sure you will see the logic behind the ban. about the only thing this feckin country has got right so far.

see what I mean... p0pc0rn41

If the public place does not allow smoking then dont smoke..
if the public place allows smoking then go ahead..
go to the public place of your choice...simple innit ...

again , the question I asked is HOW IS IT GOING TO BE POLICED ???

btw.. is smoking allowed at the bash's this year ..if it is I aint going ...

I agree Mozza !!

Couldn't have put it better myself, trouble is it always raises vehement arguments from both side but when I go for a drink, etc, I don't want to breath in 2nd hand smoke, just ask Roy Castle how it effects you over the long, oh sorry, you cant cos he died of it !

As for policing it, I've been in Ireland and Scotland in small pubs in small villages with no bouncers and no bobbies but EVERYONE I've seen abides by the law, no need to tell anyone to go outside cos they do without being told.

Smokers can smoke wherever they like, just as long as it doesn't whaft across me and kill me !!

Thank you

why the feck should you have to ask if it is a smoking enviroment when looking for a job.......?......
excuse me, what is the salary, and do i get compensation for inhalling your shite whilst i work ?
it's a fair comment if working around asbestos...... but not concerning cigarrette smoke.
its 2007, not 1920......health studies have come on leaps and bounds and it is a non win argument......tobacco and its smoke causes diseases.......so sorry but it should not be up to an employer....what your saying is one man has the right to tell you it is ok to breath in the crap while you work for him/her..bollox.
as for policing it, i think most people have widely proved that they accept the goverment act and can understand why.........it's not a hate campaign...it for the good of mankind.
