or you could ............

......... as I have done for the last 23k miles, use a tin of chain lube, I blast the chain every I fill up the tank with fuel, it takes all of 20 seconds, and fits in my pocket.
After 10 years I must have spent a massive ?20 on lube, and the chain & sprockets look as good as new .... just a thought. We all do as we do, but sometimes the phrase 'reinventing the wheel' springs to mind.

Karlos,

Where do you find chain lube tins that small and that cheap? I've not found a pocket size one, the smallest I've come across is the 5oz tins of PJ1 Blue, but I still wouldn't want one in my pocket (so to speak!).

And this is 5 quid a can, which generally lasts me 3-4 applications. So, it's costing me a lot more than your 2quid a year.

I'm currently using Castrol Chain Wax, @ ?1.50 a tin, yep, got a PJ1 blue too, in the bag or top box it lives, no mess, no sweat. Natch I exaggerate slightly on ?20 so far, but IF I've spent more than ?30 in 10 years I'm a Dutchman. I keep a bigger tin at home (Wurth) as I don't always have to lube on the run so to speak.
As I say, I am not at all not slapping Scottoilers; but I'm at a loss understanding how lubing a chain every now & then can be a real hassle. Plus the oil for them ain't exactly cheap, so again, I'm personally not sold. If I was bothered to the extent where I wanted permanent lube, I would go buy a shaft drive bike (again). I put Scottoilers in the same category as; plastic on your furniture, boot liners for your car, bags for muddy wellies, them plastic bits that you put over your carpets to stop them getting dirty, and basically everything you see advertised in those nasty Betterware catalogues.

Stuff like huggers, fender-extenders and bar risers, well I get the point, even end cans to a certain point, beyond that (from vast experience of ? versus worth), I'm what you call skeptical, not as to their ability to 'do a job', merely as to their benefit overall. I of course have fitted mini indicators & tank pads bl4hbl4h but well, you know, it must be age.
I get this trait from my grandmother who would say something like this to a poor sap salesman; "I want a huge discount, a trial period, it delivering for free and I want it an hour ago ....... sunshine " ...... she'd have ripped the piss out of a Scottoiler, whereas I'm actually more forgiving.

as for "where are they so cheap", well, I suggest you haggle more mate or go to the BMF. My grandmother died in '04, so she can't do a seminar on "get rich and stay rich" unfortunately, but the rule of thumb is 'get 25% off, or you are out of the family '................ :-0)

nut.gif

not lost it yet but it was hanging on by its last legs because my bracket didnt work when two up and the chain was wearing thro the pipe..

took the damm thing off and Im going to send it back to scottoiler and ask for a double injector thing instead
banghead.gif

cant settle with it because I know it cant be trusted .. so a tried and tested injector it is for me..

Now .. I wonder if that pipe is putting oil on my back tyre ?? must go check

Just fitted an updated version, along with new front wheel bearings, so will see what effect the update has had. The old version worked pretty well and lasted for a while, so hopefully the new one will sort out the longevity problem.
