Sunday afternoon first time out on a bike for 7 months. Fat Berts out feeding his face so I potter off to Matlock on me own for a coffee.

Alls going well and getting back into it again until I get to Matlock Bath, and get waved into a laybay by a nice Policeman.

He then starts to go though the usual 20 questions

Is this your bike ? YES

Whats the Reg Number ? DONT KNOW only got it yesterday.

He then spots my new shiny mirrord visor.

What are you going to do when it gets dark ? Errr I will change it for this one says me pulling out clear one from visor bag attached round waist.

I suppose thats OK then he says.

Exhursts are a bit noisy anit they ? Might be but they are road ones and are BS stamped. He then peers at them for a moment or two, nope they are OK.

He then procceds to look the bike over checks the Tax disk tyres etc, all goes well until he gets round the other side where my trusty walking stick is strapped to the bike.

Whats this then ? Errrr its a walking stick

Whats that for then ? Errrr walking with I`m disabled.

This seems to satisfy him but he then checks to see if its firmly attached to the bike by giving it a few tugs.

Phew it passes.

Anyway he let me off with a warning for being in charge of a dangerously slow bike.

I manged to refrain from commenting well what a waste of fooken time and effort.

Did notice that in the 10 minutes I was there that NOT ONE Cage was pulled over:dunno:

Does this happen in other parts of the country ???? or is it just Derbyshire

Happened to me in Bedfordshire last summer. Got stopped by some fresh outta the box copper.

"You do know that dark visors are ilegal in the UK sir?"

"Yes orifier, thats why I wear a tearoff!"

That was it, spent the next 20 mins in the layby while they went over every inch of the bird, even PNC'd the bugger!

Dont think he appreicated the wheel spin I performed as I exited the layby either

Quality post Cyclops!

I got pulled over twice last year.
First occasion; let me off despite having a 4-1 Akrapovic, dark visor and smaller plate, but done all the Harley twats behind me for having tiny plates :f :}
Second occasion; totally legal Fazer 1000; got done for being SMUG! :xm

YES it does happen to others!

I have been pulled over about 4 times in the last couple of months ( usually late at night ).

NOT sticking up for them but, if some git had 'borrowed' mine I would be grateful if he got pulled ( one for FB )
But they would most likely let em go without checking PNC!!

But in your case.....
Was it cos you were wobbling all over the road at walking pace ?

Nice to see you can be out and about again.

Believe me when I say that problem is not unique to your particular Suzuki!!!

Mine's been parked at the dealers for so long even the friggin wheels have devolped flat spots!

You have no idea how lucky you are it NOT buying a VStrom, glad to have put you off it!

I've heard on the grapevine (my local BMF rep) that North Wales police are carrying out Operation Roadbock AGAIN this year.

Usual stuff stop all bikes and do the full once over.

So why don't Plod pull over ALL vehicles after say 11pm?

I'd like to see some figures for the percentage of bikes v cars that are pulled over for a 'random' check.

I agree Quiney !

I must admit, when I asked ( after a very polite conversation about the weather) why I had been pulled at the last one,
The young whipper snapper said my headlight appeared to be flickering.

I explained that it was due to the crap road surface, after an embarressed pause he had a look around my bike, thanked me and waved me on after a PNC check.
Whilst this was going on his mate ( obviously his tutor constable) stopped a car!
It was about 1am must have been bored ( and they were on foot !!!)

I obviously dont let on what I do, its more fun:rolleyes:

Oh.

And..
Most forces have now got rid of traffic officers ( cos the speed cameras can make more cash) and the local 'beat' bobbies are too busy at domestics, drunks fighting, noisy parties, people walking on the cracks in the pavement, anything that the senoir staff set as that months 'performance indicator'.. nowt to do with crime fighting tho!

I honestly believe that on tha last occasion (above) the tutor con was trying to show the lad what he SHOULD be doing as opposed to what the bosses want. ( I do actually agree with CONTROLLED stop checks at night, its suprising what you see in the back of a tranny van after midnight ).

I did not think that foot plods had any powers to pull cars/bikes over for a road check, thought it was only traffic that was allowed to do it!

I am going back a few years when a foot plod in London wanted to see my Tachograph, i told him to Eff off, conversation got a bit heated (esp as I had only stopped for directions!) His mate saunters around the corner and tells me I'm correct, and rollicks other plod.

Dont get me started on about the Department of Transport Ministry Road checks please!!!

No. . . Sorry Codbasher.

Any Constable ( police officer) in uniform has the power to stop any vehicle whilst it is on a road. or in any location if he HAS REASON TO BELIEVE that the driver is drunk / drugged.

BUT.
They should have a REASONABLE REASON.
ie, directing traffic, doing a DOT road check/ survey. carrying out a major crime survey ( a child has been taken and they are stopping ALL vehicles in a certain area.. must have a special form signed by a high boss) or they think the vehicle has a defect, is dangerous, stolen, no tax... etc, etc, etc..
In fact, if an officer wants to stop you, a good reason can always be found ( i know its a grey area, but its always been like that)
As long as its not used for stupid ( or anti bike) reasons I dont see a problem, Some will abuse, some wont stop a vehicle from one week to the next. er..... sorry.

Oh.. and the reason that the second plod said the first plod was wrong.... he most likely realised he was a total pratt, and it was a way to get him off your back !

If you look in this weeks MCN (comic), traffic cops are about as rare as rocking horse poo. Just about all counties have done away with them!
(Just need them to do away the rest now   )

Oh yes..

FIVE months, ONE day... then they can get rid of as many as they want ( Im fully paid up on me pension then!)

no we dont quiney

not in My opinion, Id much rather we had SENSIBLE policing, than a camera that dosnt catch the ''bad,/drunk,'' driver, or those without tax and insurance,

stands back and waits for the sh*t to fly:f

Well Ian, um...er.. well,
Im embarrassed to say... um...

Murt, I must admit I put it down to the fact that only Traffic were trained on Tachographs, general beat plods are not trained on them.

If they remove proper traffic cops, then IMHO the roads are going get a damm site more dangerous for us bikers, speed cameras only catch speeders, CCTV on Motorways help, but mainley at Junctions and busy sections. Gatsos do not catch drink drivers etc etc. My reckoning is that accident figures will sky rocket over the next 5 years.

I have to agree with fishthumper here. I f they remove all the traffic divisions the roads will become a death trap, well, worse than normal!

I just happen to live in a county that still has a dedicated Traffic division AND still has police motorbikes. Been out on a sunday morning ride, stopping at traffic lights and having a chat with a plod on a bike about where to go for good roads etc, etc. Its nice to see them acting like human beings towards other bikers. Essex police did away with their bike force 5 years ago and the complaints they recieved about the car borne coppers attitudes towards the biking community went through the roof. I have heard a rumour from a friend in the know that essex are now thinking about reinstating the bike force.
