Front wheel damage from a pothole

Smix

Ok - hit a (probably deep - it was dark) pothole Tuesday night in the dark (and rain!). Didn't see it, just felt the bang, jarred my elbow (not badly) but there is now damage to the front wheel rim. So. My big question is - if the impact was enough to damge the front wheel, should I be checking anything else?

Don't know if this is still the case, but you used to be able to claim against the council for the damage.

:dunno:

Or maybe you knew that and I'll just shuttup......

:p

Lumpy - :k:k:k oh goody - nother trip to Bristol!! Tyre looks ok, but hadn't thought about the inside. :k

Lebowski - I do know, I'm just debating whether to or not. Going to go and have a look at the area I hit the hole and see how bad it is. I guess if I need a new tyre and a new wheel, I should put in a claim of some sort. I'll see how much it'll cost me first I think!

Oh dear youre not having a good time at the moment are you w;;v

Last time i hit a lump in the south of france it blew one of my fork seals so might be worth keep an eye out for any evidence of seepage; if you find any evidence just wipe it away

If you have to replace the seals make sure you do both and Jaws sells a pair for just 7 squid - bargain

the only other thing you should be checking for is more pot holes c7u8

To be honest, I do think I will change the wheel (as soon as I have some ?'s to spend!) - I'll take some photos of the damage later, after I've done a detour home to check out the pothole, so you guys can give an opinion on whether I should or not.

And sadly, Bristol is local for bike stuff, anywhere good to go for getting the tyre checked is going to be 20 miles or so c7u8 , so Bristol it is. :k:k

I have fork seals already (something I planned to do on the pinkbike!!) so will keep an eye out for 'seepage'. :k

I think this is a horrible pothole! Sadly I didn't take anything (disposable) to show as measurement - its a really busy road, so difficult to put anything in the hole to be measured cos it'd get run over!!

the photos of the wheel aren't great, but hopefully someone can tell me if it looks really bad??

Hey Tall girl

The bike shouldnt be ridden with that wheel in
if you imagine not getting balanced properly on a tyre change then the damage is 10 fold, plus as the tyre expands with heat it may expand to much to creat an airtight seal.

I would if poss do the measurement thing and register it asap with your local council/highways dept just to cover ya fine ass. You can change your mind later if you want but at least you have registered your complaint/claim asap.

I would also get a wheel and tyre price from your Official Honda dealer, get the pennies then buy with your knowledge, the difference will make up for your inconvenience and trouble.

As to holding up traffic to take measurements, try putting art there, they will go around her hehe

Jeez Smix you really twatted that, didnt know you had bent the rim, def wouldnt be happy using a tyre that had been through that. I'm guessing that the whole wheel went through the hole and you didnt just catch the edge of the rim if thats possible? Either way wouldnt ride it like that unless you stick to 50 mph

Cheers Dufus

A mate has just been round so i asked him to look - he's said the same thing really. Specially when I said I had noticed today that the bike had acquired a 'shake'!

I am going to phone tomorrow - as Paul just pointed out, on a big heavy bike you have a chance to control it through something like that, but a scooter or dinky bike could probably crash if it hit that?

Its just a total shit that I now have no bike again until I acquire a new wheel and tyre :bang: :bang: c7u8 c7u8

(gonna have to change avatar comment to 'unlucky fairy')

thanx for the comments - I'll measure tomorrow (without Arty as she is too far away!!)

xx

I did go through the first dip, then hit the ledge on the way out! Thing is, it is just on a 30mph limit start, but as it was wet, and the start of the limit is only about 10yrds before the start of a tight downhill left hander, I don't think I was doing over 30. Amazed at the damage though. Heavy old bike huh!! (No comments about the rider please!!!!)

Spot on Dufus. Don't ride it girl.

Give Pete a call first.

Did I mention, not to ride it.

Take it in the car to get the tyre off, and get them to check it. Hagon would be able to repair the wheel but need to have the tyre off for that too.

Did I mention not to ride it?

Pants

Thanx hunny

I'll call Pete.

Now I'm just going to sit in a corner and

If I didn't have really shit luck I wouldn't have any, and right now - I'd rather have no luck please :bang: c7u8 c7u8

ok - anyone got any sensible hints on getting the front high enough (without a front paddock stand) to get the wheel out?

I guess there is a car jack in the car (never needed to look for it) but is that safe? Bearing in mind this bike has NO CENTRE STAND!

FFS whats all this crying stuff about ?? it's a bloody wheel!! your ok, the bike didn't chuck you off and theres a good possibility you may get some compo from the twats that let the road get in that state!! I would be sat feeling very lucky it wasn't worse!! :dunno:

Jeez, Dufus, what have I done to upset you?

Even pedestrians don't go around me, I'm the original invisible women, always getting barged out of the way, what chance do you think I'll have on a piggin road?

Spose I'd just have to put on my scary hair and boots again!

OI, SMIX, NO! This has got to stop, girl!

Smix good choice .

Personally I would invest in a front paddock stand, even the cheapest one, ebay etc failing that use a car jack to hoik the front up placing the jack under the open part of the fairing underneath, then use blocks, wooden best, not bricks unless you place wood on the top to stop the brick crumbling either side of the wheel so each fork has a block to rest on.

If you have a paddock stand I would use that before putting the front forks on the blocks.

Failing that get stan to wheelie it up then pop the puppy out :yo:

Cheers - although if the good choice is lack of centre stand, it wasn't my choice!!! and I need one!!!!!!!!!! And there is no way Stan is going to get the keys - he might not give them back being as I want to make it a girlie colour and he is miffed about that!!

Will get someone to help me put it on the rear stand and go from there. Thanx :k
