I found, (and these are only my opinions before someone jumps on me! ) it to be wallowy and very soft in the suspension department, grounded out too easily with a pillion on board, very nervous steering in a side wind, bloody awful windblast, pillion cannot use the stock grabhandle as they end up sitting on them cos of where they are mounted, cheaply finished.
Brakes were good though!

Mike, I can't commnets on two-up riding as I never carry a pilion as my g/f has a Blade, but I agree with your comments on the stock suspension. However, like any bike, once set-up properly it's quite capable; if you don't believe me ask Dave T or Wolfy or PyschobikerBen, alternativley, I'll give you a demonstration :} :beer:
Even when solo riding it grounds out the stock pegs quite easily, but at least it's only the pegs!!! I got round this by fitting a nice pair of rearsets but I found that with the BIRD it wasn't much effort to ground the fairing out.
The pillion grabhandles are totally in the wrong place though and the brakes are good but I've enhanced mine a tad to give 'em that extra bit of initial bite.

[Toni QUOTE]granted the BB rode uneven surfaces slightly better that the fazer.. [/QUOTE]

Toni, nooooooooooooo................................. I can't belive you said that :eek: Get ya suspension sorted mate, honestly. The suspenders on the Fazer 1000 are fully adjustable front & rear and I bet you've got yours on standards setting? Since getting rid of the Barge, I'm able to stay stick to B roads where the surfaces ain't always great. Let's meet up soon. :beer:

Fazer

Good points Mike, much the same as mine.... I also had a ZX 9 which I thought was a cracking bike, one of the best to me. But I suppose every one has there own bench mark of what is a good bike. Some like track days some like touring and me I like doing mega miles, so if it can do a 1000 miles a day with pillion and Oxford Luggage then I class that as a good bike.
Though age is begining to take its toll.

As someone else said, it really depends on what you want to use the Bike for - the two are quite different machines.

The Bird is excellent for high speed long distance touring, whilst the FZ is a great all round bike.

There is NO comparison between the two for turbulence - I'm 5' 10", of 'average' build, and I found the buffeting from the FZ screen intolerable - indeed, that was the main reason I sold the bike - even after trying 3 screens.

That the FZ screen produces such turbulence is not surprising - it is too far forward of the rider, with the result that a band of turbulent air is generated just around the area of the rider's helmet. :mad:

The Bird, on the other hand, has an integrated faring, which generates very little turbulent air - I use the stock (04) screen, and do not have a problem up to 160 km/hr. Even above that, the air flow is not turbulent, just rather strong...:-:

The Bird has that creamy smooth engine, whilst the FZ donk vibrates like all transverse 4's...

The Bird pulls harder, and for longer than the FZ.

The FZ has better suspension than the Bird.

The Bird outsells the FZ by a factor of 5:1 in Australia, even with a $2500 price differential.

The Bird is engineered better, and has that Honda reliability...

As I said at the start of this post, it depends on what you want to do with your motorcycle - for blasting about in the twisties, the FZ is better - however, for long distance comfort, the Bird is a clear winner, IMHO.

Buy some VFR or Heli bars and give them a try.

Exactly :beer: (see my very first post in this thread :rolleyes: )

surely isn't that a reflection on the type of riding and roads you guys do in Oz? My g/f (originally from Adeliade) says she'd probably go for a more tourer orientated bike in Oz and not the Blade she owns here; just a thought :beer:

True, but then, the top selling road bike is the latest CBR1000, which outsells the Bird by a factor of 2....:dunno:

And the Bird outsells the FJR and the ST1300 by a factor of 2....:dunno:

Main thing is - the Bird outsells ALL Cruiser bikes (including HD's)...:}

I rode an FJR the other and was surprised how well it went; then I checked out the bhp and it made more sense! :rolleyes:

Agreed mate; worst 3 years of my biking life were spent on a HD due to the accumulation of 11 points on my license.[/B]

it wasn't me saying I don't carry a pillion. :k

Oi Lumpster, don't get all upset now :blush: ; TBH even if I wanted to I couldn't due to the lack of pillion peg hangers and pegs, 'cos Yam couldn't afford to put 'em on the Fazer (being a budget bike!). So they replaced them with a NWS single can hanger on one side and a remote pre-load adjuster on the other side :B

Sorry Derek, you'll have to elaborate, we southerners don't undertsand the sophisticated subtle humour North of the Watford Gap :}

Back on topic.
Anyone trying a Fazer 1000 on Metzlers MEZ4's (stock fit) should be aware that they are worse than Avons (seriously :blush: )

nice one Pete

but if those are Metzler MEZ4's tyres and you're a spirited rider, they need to go! I do like the black engine finnish and that dark silver with contrasting tail unit is the dogs.
And here's an old piccy of mine and a few pics of subsequent mods
