Dear God, give me strength!

Well, I've had five minutes to myself and long enough to put the meter across the battery terminals. With the meter set to DC (wavy line) all I'm getting is a reading of 0.001v. I have had the battery on a trickle charge and when this was first plugged in the meter showed 0.05v. Over a period of an hour the reading went back to 0.001v, so I think it's a safe conclusion to say it's fooked!
:-(

Wavy line is AC Boggy! Check it with set to DC....AC is to check the output from the alternator which then goes to the regulator/ RECTIFIER to be turned into DC. A babe in arms! 8rfl@

Nope! Still reading 0.001v and so still fooked!

Is there any hope for me? :dunno:

You have the leads plugged in the wrong place Boggy. Can you post a piccie of the front of the meter or tell me the make and model!

A piece of Amurican crap, Boggy.

Go to Halfords or Maplins or feckin anywhere and buy a cheap £10/£15 meter and we'll take a look. That thing tries to do all things to all men and is good for fuck all!c7u8

I've worked with some brilliant and some crap meters for 60 years and I can't figure out what settings are what on that piece of shit. Please tell me you didn't buy it!

boggy, turn the meter on two clicks from off to the V with a straight line over it, make sure the leads are in the com (black) and VA (Red) sockets then read across the battery with the bike off, and then if you can with the bike running at 3000rpm, the volts running should go up from about 12V not running to 13.8v running, any lower or no change and your bike is not charging.

ps you could check your meter is working with a battery out of a remote control it should read 1.5.v for a new battery. There is a fuse inside the meter, and if you accidentally connected the meter across your bike battery when set to read current (Amps) you will have blown the internal fuse, and stopped the meter from reading anything! you can test the fuse easily by putting the meter in the continuity position and touching the probes together, your meter will either buzz or read o.o ohms on the readout, or both!

ps Bill, there is nothing wrong with that meter, the fault is three feet away HOLDING the meter! lol

just noticed in the write up it says leads already attached in the small print...so check the fuse as I described above.

You can see a V with a straight line over it? I can't. are there threewires plugged in Boggy?

blew the piccie up.

I can now see there is a flat bridges symbol on the second position! Must be DC. How many leads Boggy?

position seven is the buzzer test. this is the one that will check if the meter fuse is ok. touching the leads together in this mode will make a buzzing sound. DO NOT CONNECT ACROSS YOUR BIKE IN THIS POSITION.

It's got to be said that all this electrickery stuff is so not my thing and a box of tricks with leads running from it is clearly better off in the hands of somebody who knows what they are doing. Physics was not something I enjoyed at school and is probably why I'm confused dot com.

What I do know though, and I can vouch for it with total 100% authority, is that my bike ain't a runner and therefore fucked!

Bill, the meter was given to me by my uncle ( saved a bob or two atleast) and as previously said, he is a very experienced electrical engineer having been responsible as second engineer for the now decommissioned Dungeness "A" power station. I'm sure he wouldn't have or given me duff kit... it's me that's the duff one!

its not complicated, its talked up a lot. its a bit like plumbing. you need a complete loop for something to flow around, if you get a hole in the loop or the pipe gets squashed, the water stops. electrics is pretty much the same....

I should have showed more sensitivity. We CAN use this meter to see what is wrong with your bike so let's give it a go. c7u8

I mean all the battery check positions and the continuity 442. Who would use those when you have V and Ohm? What is the position with the lines for?:dunno:

Bill, there's no need to apologise, ya daft git! I'm too thick skinned to be offended and I'm not one to throw my teddy out the pram. In fact, all you guys have been very patient with me and for that I'm very grateful and as this is all an education for me, I just need to read and learn. I might not be overly practical in this field but I know that I have strengths and experience in others that, should people need it, I am more than willing to share and help with.

Btw..it has two leads, one red and one black

When do you want to try and see what's wrong with your bike?
