Biker or Motorcyclist

Who Cares!

Been riding bikes for the best part of some short while and it's my opinion that we get enough bad press as it is without trying to create divisions amongst ourselves. Yes I do the continental trips on my bikes. No I dont do the TT Races. Nor do I condone anyone who does its their choice. Yes I keep to the speed limits in built up areas (Most of the Time) Yes I've done double the speed limit on most motorways and decent straights that I have ridden on don't make me any better or worse than most people on the group. Who cares anyway! Don't have to ride if the weather is crap, but if I want to I do! old enough to remember when you were either a mod or a rocker I've kicked a few scooters in my time. Young enough not to care. Just love my bikes call me what you will I don't care. :dunno: :dunno:

 I'd say that I used to be a biker in my teens. Never went any where unless I could go on the bike. Worked with bikes then too. After I got married and joined the rat race in my twenties I reckon I became a Motorcyclist and am still one today. :bang:

Interesting how people look at the way they live and how it changes the way they define themselves init, I am like John have been on two wheels for about 38 yrs(and off em!) kicked mods, wrecked bikes, been in clubs and gangs, used to live at the "Busy Bee" and work by the "Ace" and loved every minute of it, except the crap bikes when they broke down, anyway what's the difference really, we all love riding bikes and get our kicks from it, so who f***ing cares what we call ourselves :violin:

I'M A BIKER AND PROUD OF IT!!!!!!!:yo: :yo:

ok

so mr bloggs who lives and works in london, who has bought a cb250 superdream to go to work and back 10 miles each way, because it only takes 30 minutes and costs ?5 a month in petrol is a biker??

And the local chapter is a group of motorcyclists???

i don't think so.

I was / am interested in what and how other people think about themselves and their mates.

I do not look like a biker, but have been around bikes for the last 31 years. (am only 34) so they are in my blood. The biker gang thing only came along when i was about 13 and has already disappeared and come back again. (Mates and me getting married did not help).

I do not do drugs, have never done time, (except for a bed for the night a couple of times). I was a mod had couple of scooters as well.

I believe that most people who ride bikes today are Motorcyclists. Which is why I believe the feeling of the brotherhood, gang what ever you want to call it has faded and most people no longer wave, stop to help each other etc.

Just before xmas i saw a bike in the bus stop with the rider standing in the rain, I went past him, gave my self a bollocking turned around and went back to him. He had a puncture in his back tyre, did not know the area, so we locked his bike with my chain, went to my house, got warm had a tea, got in my car drove 5 miles to a mates collected a bike trailer, drove back to his bike , loaded it up and then drove7 miles to the best tyre person in stevenage, who repaired the tyre and charged him a ?10. The rider then went on his way after thanking me and trying to give me money, he was 17 years old and on his way home up the A1 somewhere from a uni in london to spend xmas with his parents.

He told me that he had been there for 2 hrs, on a main road cars buses, bikes going passed all the time and NOBODY had stopped.

What i got out of that was soaking wet and being 2hrs late to the shops, and the feeling of what a load of tossers we all are, just going about our own business, not noticing somebody who is need of help half the time.

I glad i stopped for him, so was he, next time i will not ride straight pass.

We all ride bikes, we are all in the same gang, brotherhood etc.

But i believe a biker is somebody who lives the lifestyle, is into the scene etc.

My tuppeneth !

I agree with you Wolverine, sort of !

I've been riding for 32 years (probably why Ive got piles and segs on my arse), never done drugs, never been in a 'gang', ridden all sorts of crap (until now of course!) but I ride as much as I can. I feel shite if I can't come into work on the bike and very frustrated, I am very lucky to have a winter bike so I don't bugger up the bird, but that enables me to keep on riding. I've been married 25 years and in all that time my missus wants to get her leg over as much as possible (makes a change!)
Now that the family is grown, we are planning loads of holidays on the bike (something we couldn't do until now), before the family we toured to Switzerland on a CB750 (twice) and we both feel we are bikers.

Unfortunately, I would describe my 17 year old son as a motorcyclist, why ?

Well he only looks at his ZZR400 as a means of transport, has no interest in biking mags, programs or anything remotely associated with bikes. Now whether this is because its restricted to 33bhp and there is no real power in it,I don't know, but at his age I was riding round on a 50cc Ducati moped !!

In those days we had to de-coke it myself, sort it out when it broke down (often) and basically knew every nut and bolt.
If the ZZR runs out of petrol he's fooked !! never mind anything mechanical !!

So I suppose what I'm saying is that I feel like a 'biker', I love riding, will ride at any opportunity (given typical family duties!) and can never see me not having a bike. I love touring, meeting other bikers and basically the whole scene.

My opinion is that a motorcyclist is someone who rides as a means of getting from A to B.

A biker goes a wee bit further.

Now that is only IMHO, so PLESE don't slag me off !!!

It just occured to me that you can't be a biker without being a motorcyclist...........the fact that we own and ride a motorcycle (A two-wheeled motor vehicle resembling a heavy bicycle) makes us 'motorcyclists' by definition............therefore a biker is indeed a motorcyclist too..............

Hmmmm..............

It's a great thread - perhaps we should start with what we believe the correct definitions are of 'biker' and 'motorcyclist'...............

To me a 'biker' in the true sense of the word is one who is a member of a motorcycle club / gang who lives for his bike, who's bike is his only and sole form of transportation and whos life revolves around being an integral part of a biking community...................

A 'motorcyclist' is anybody who owns and rides a motorcycle.........

Me..............well I refer to myself as a 'POWERED TWO WHEELERIST'.......................

Mmmmm........

who's bike is his only and sole form of transportation

You'd be surprised to see how many smart cars are parked in the HA enclosure @ the Bulldog Bash. I've seen a couple of the older members of the HA driving around in a jag.

Biker or Motorcyclist ?

Rode a H-D soft-tail custom until recently as a member of a back-patch club so does that make me a biker ??? (one of the 1% wan**rs as Jack put's it in a earlier post !!!!(Be a little more careful with your choice of phrase, Jack)!!!!!

I now ride the 'Bird ......so does that mean I've become a motor-cyclist ??? Maybe I've been fortunate in that I obtained my bike licence at 17 and a car licence at 18 so had the choice of whether to try and bungee bits to a pillion seat to fix up whatever heap I was building at the time, or to borrow a van and carry parts in comfort and safety !!!!

As Ben has stated...the HA will use cars if they feel so inclined and who is going to tell them they are not bikers ??

Riding bikes for 29 years....building 'em....fixing 'em....cursing 'em ..
being skint because of 'em....and countless tears shed over 'em..

BIKER......MOTORCYCLIST.....COMPLETE HEADCASE ?????

All of the above apply !!!!!!!!!!!

Course you can Ben........

SSMC .........but all in the past now.

We all have reasons for leaving parts of our past behind and I don't have any regrets.....or anything to hide !!!!

The bloody custom bikes shake yer to pieces anyway....and the 'Bird is quicker in 2nd gear than any chop I've ever ridden !!!

Take care !!!!!!!

Sorry don't do stereo-typing!!!

and to be honest (whilst this is an excellent thread Andy) some of the posts frankly piss me right off and are just a tad hypocritical :bang:
I have never been without a bike (of some sort or description) since I was 17 and could not live without my bike. I always acknowledge other oncoming bikers (irrespective of bike category & frequently get ignored). I always stop if I see another biker who maybe in need of help (even if I'm in my car). I get really wound up if for whatever reason I can't go out on the bike and have planned to and regularly drop ALL my plans to cease the opportunity. Biking has cost me at least one serious relationship and thousands of pounds over the years. I take at least one week off a year, just to scratch around for hours on end (and Ben can vouch for that) and I've had a few run in's with the law (albeit in my youth), but I've no criminal record, never done drugs, never been in a biker gang and had no desire to. I used to have long hair, but at the same time wore the mod gear (when it was in vogue). I've done the commuting in all sorts of shit weather bit, but choose not to now; yet I did thousands of miles last year on the BB both here and abroad and planning to do so again this year. So go on then, what am I ?

BIT LATE IN ON THIS ONE BUT

as have only had licence for past 3 years.it is something i haven't considered... 1 thing that made me smile more than anything once i had passed was the fact that so many motorcycle rider's did acknowledge me ... and the fact that i could stop at any roadside layby/cafe whatever and if there were other rider/s, none seem to mind me wandering over and having a chat. R#?

I have stopped by the road for a ciggie..i know disgusting habit..and on at least 2 occasions other riders have stopped and enquired as to my well being.:) ....

i'm just happy to have my bike and ride it and meet like minded people.:)

so is a biker the rebel, outlaw, bad mother fooker, etc and the motorcyclist a normal joe public kinda bloke.

Both ride bikes , both can and do love their bikes and would not be without them.

Do bikers have an interest in ALL types of bikes, and the motorcyclist just in the same type of bike they own /ride.

Orgi is a biker, is malcolm???

sorry but......dont do labels

Kin hell, you lot dont alf talk a load of cr@p :m

Now i will keep it brief and i'm sure you will all agree with me but i dont consider myself as either. The only reason i have a bike is cos i cant find a car that'll do 180mph and 128 in 10.9 for 4 grand. That then just makes me some wanker that likes to get his leg over his Bird once in a while when the mood takes.

Cheers, i'll get me coat
