Carbs strip down.

GSX750 1993 (M)

As some may have noticed I like bike electrics but I have volunteered to clean up a set of inline 4 carbs from a GSX. I've done single carbs years ago but never four. The bike has been parked up outdoors for four years. Butterflies are VERY stiff, not closing with the spring, and three out of four slides are sticky. Single throttle cable not dual.

Any tips please? :dunno:

Good grief! How dirty?

Looks like your going to have some fun with that lot, Bill! @tu*

I did a bank of four not so long back on my work wife's 1993 ZX600r and it took a day of fettling to soak, strip, clean and rebuild. The bike wouldn't idle without the choke and would take ages before you could shut the choke off once riding. The only problem I had was with removing one of the 16 float bowl screws and ended up stripping the head of it. The screws on this thing were softer than a soft thing and in the end I had no option to drill it out and use a self-tapper on the rebuild. Something for you to watch out for there, perhaps. I used a pan of paraffin to clean all the main bits and then a can of aerosol carb cleaner to do flush and finish off. Seemed to do the trick nicely. Once back together I visually balanced the carbs and reset the idle screw before I refitted them and was pleasantly surprised to find it started first time and ran sweetly and without the issues it had had before. I suggested that the bike be taken for a proper carb balance but the bike seems to run perfectly well without it and she is happy with the work done.

Have fun!@tu*

Visually balanced?

Can you be more specific please, Boggy? :dunno:

Thanks, Boggy.

How does one tell which is the "base" carb? :dunno:

The screw adjuster for raising or lowing the tick over is connected directly to the base carb. You will notice in the video that carbs are connected by a rail. Carbs 1, 3 & 4 have adjuster screws on them and yet number 2 doesn't. He refers to number 2 as the "base" and you can see that the others are adjustable and thus synced to it.

Does that make sense?

Perfect sense.

Thanks, Boggy.

Needles and jets can be cleaned with (of all things) Dettol. Brings them up lovely. Keep carb cleaner away from any o rings or diaghpragms too

How's the strip down coming along then, Bill? Done and dusted or still in progress? @tu*

Not even started, Boggy.

I'm waiting for the owner to clean them up with paraffin and deliver them to me. :-0)

ultrasonic cleaning is best way, if not a tin or two of carb cleaner.
Wurth sell carb linkage spray lubricant, might be worth investing in a tin

Good Luck

I've got the carbs now and some carb cleaner. I thought WD40 for the linkages. :whi5tl:

I'd save the WD, it's way too good to use on carbs...
