I saw this on another BBS, not one of ours I hope

I was at the famous Bassetts Pole bike meet this evening watching the regular Tuesday evening 'stunt' displays. Upwards of a 1000 bikers were there watching all manner of un-cordinated stunts while one solitary bike cop sat and watched powerless to do anything.

Of course the inevitable happened, a geezer on what looked like a Super Blackbird looses control while 'sparking' his knee sliders at about 50mph and the bike flies into the un-protected crowd inches away from the road.

I counted 8 ambulances and 15 paramedics on the scene shortly afterwards in what looked like a bad episode of casualty! Not sure how many people got hurt but clearly it wasn't good, the rider didn't look too healthy either.

I could be wrong but I think that may be the last meet at Bassetts Pole.

Rant time~~~~~~~

Isn't that just bloody typical!!

As "bikers / motorcyclist people" we are already tarred with mantle of irresponsible, loud, law-breaking hooligans

Then some IDIOT causes mayhem and injury just to try and prove what a capable rider he really is

Yet another piece of bad press that will encourage the anti-bikers

Why do these people do this - what to they get out of it - except for a massaging of their over-inflated ego's??

For Fuc*s sake - these people need to get a life

Nothing wrong with "stunting" if thats what youre into - however do it on an empty car park or an empty country road - NOT when there is 1000 people some of whom can [and in this case have] been injured

Irresponsible riding in built up and/or crowded areas is crazy - and a fatality just waiting to happen

Just like the people [and you know who you are] who overtake on double white lines [in this case with a 40 foot juggernaut coming towards us] at stupid speeds

Over the weekend I have enjoyed some very fast riding with some very competant riders [Chunky Shaun Buzz]. The speeds were safe but fast - yet on double white lines there was NO overtaking.

Double Whites are there for a reason - READ THE ROAD!!

I never wish ill on anyone - but in the case of the BIRD at Bassetts Pole - I hope he broke every fecking bone in his body

Bugger - rant over

Quite agree with the rant FB...

Unfortunately, this sort of thing has been going on for years at the Bassetts Pole meetings. Untill last year, the Police used to put at least 3 cars/3 bikes & 2 video vans to watch over the antics of the brave or stupid...Letters would follow a few days later to the insane people who couldnt take a hint..And those who went too far were politely taken to one side and the error of their ways pointed out...LOL.

This year though, I have been up 3 times, and seen only a max of 2 cars there, and only 1 bike from the local constabulary. This means that they have little or no chance of effective policing of the event (safety wise or otherwise). Also more and more carsfull of families(kids) are turning up for a "free show", which on this occasion, turned sour on them... They were parking the cars right up to about 12ins from the road edge, and then stand on the kerb to watch (suicidal or what??). Luckily, Jan & I were on holiday that week, so we missed the carnage.

Accidents have happend on many occasions before, but not to the extent of this one, and as Wiz says, I also would not be suprised if that signalled the demise of famous (infamous) Bassets Pole meeting. I for one will miss the meeting, but not some of the prats who spoilt it for others. I dont wish to be a killjoy, but I enjoy watching someone as skilled as say 1200Pete or Cruiser doing what they enjoy doing (knee down on the roundabout), but what I object to, is the others, who's enthusiasm exceeds their skill, and endanger others(spectators/riders/motorists alike) whether it be at a meet, or just on the road..

As anyone who knows me will tell, I still do get the red mist descending (yes, even at my advanced age) and I have a go at sportsbike riders every once in a while. But I do know when to back off, ie; when it gets too f**kin dangerous...

Sorry all, Rant over now.

Enjoy your riding, but be safe guys... I dont want to be saying goodbye to any of you lot...

Best wishes,

Rolfy

I was there...

Until 9.00 pm and everything was okay up until then.

There were two traffic cars and two traffic bikes parked up near to the entrance to Bassets Pole.

All in all everyone was well behaved, there were thousands of bikes there, I mean thousands.

Running along the side of the Pole is a righthand bend that the crowd stand alongisde while bikes come hurtling along and perform 'stunts'.

If an RTA did occur (after I had gone) its an accident thats been waiting to happen. The road surface at this point is breaking up and in need of resurfacing. So I suppose these twats doing these stunts didnt have a look at that first and this may have caused them to lose it.

I'm sure it wont mean the end of the Pole, but I'm sure it will be policed more heavily and bikers can expect the increased attention they will have bought on themselves, plates, cans, tyres etc etc....

When will these tossers ever learn?

Meetings

There is a big meeting up at Lydiate near Southport every Wednesday - never a police presence until last week - some dickhead the week before has pulled a few stunts - last week just after 21.00 hrs the laws turns up mob-handed - all you could hear was mutterings about " haven't they got nothing else to do"? The prick perfoming stunts caused all that - loads of lads got pulled for small plates and loud cans. I hope they all thanked him!
This was told to me a lad over the road from me who has a GSXR 1000 with a very small plate and an Akrapovic can on - he couldn't understand why has got a producer.
It's the same at the Ponderosa up on the Horseshoe Pass on a Sunday - no law about until ( usually ) a loon on a Daytona pulls massive wheelies up and down the road - you can guarantee that the law will be there in 10 minutes.
When will we ever learn? :shooter:

Forgive my obvious ignorance, but what is a small plate??? I can agree more about these types of displays. There is a ride-in locally here at fast food place. Squids doing wheelies out on the four-lane in front of the place. The coppers wait for them and hand out tickets. You would think that they would learn. Shame about the injured in the crowd.

Quite agree Buzz road is shite and its an accident waiting to happen. Only reason HB and I weren`t there is cos he can`t ride yet.
My stepbrother heard on the news this morning that there were 3 fatalities and 2 seriously injured. I suspect this may well be the end of meets there esp as the meets were nearly shut down last summer over far less.

Some tw*t always has to go and spoil it for the majority. By the way said tw*t apparently broke his wrist! No justice :bandit: :bandit:

Just been on the news, One woman still critical, four others including to rider recieved hospital treatment. The Police say there was 2 patrols at the pole but had been called away at the time of the incident. The rider is 28 yrs and from Birmingham. The bike was a honda but not a Bird, difficult to say what the model was.

Thoughts with the poor woman in hospital

BAD SHIT

This can only do more harm to our recreational pastime....
We've all done stupid things and i'm sure the guy/woman riding didn't INTEND to do it however it was reckless in practice.
If it had been my Mrs they killed then there would be NO hiding place for them,, i take full responsibility for my actions,, some erratic,, some not so..
Anyone on here who claims they don't take the odd chance is a bull shitter and i feel for the rider too who must wanna turn back the clock. :xm

What I cant understand is why the police decided to leave the site, they go every week and get a lot of abuse from loads of people but by their very presence they tend to calm it down a bit and stop the 'TWATS' trying to show off what they cant do in an area that isnt safe.
It seems that the police had left the massive crowds at Bassets Pole and gone off to Hams Hall which is like a massive industrial estate with no bystanders where the local lads who dont mind falling off the bike they nicked earlier go to put on a show.
Would any of you stand on a bend where people on bikes were flying straight at you doing stunts on a rough surface with loose gravel on the road. I'm sorry to have to say this but if you take a chance like that and it goes tits up dont fookin well moan you were a arse for standing there in the first place.

A small plate refers to the licence tag Rich.
In the UK there are very specific rules governing not only the size of the plate, but the letter spacing and font used.
Yer actual legal sized plate is a little smaller that pallet ( or so it looks on some bikes ! )
When people do stupid things and get pulled over, a small plate, non standard cans or cans that do not meet maximum allowable noise levels, or even the use of a dark visor can be used to 'tot up' the offences.. Or perhaps if there is a purge going on the above list of highly dangerous and life threatening items can be reason enough to ensure a heavy fine.

Thanks John. So does a govt. agency not issue the tag? Here in the States the state govt. issues the tag and it is a standard size. Here in Florida the motorcycle tag is much smaller than the ones for cages, about 4 inches by 7 inches.

Woman dies after rally bike crash

Police say the biker was negotiating a chicane when he lost control
A woman who was seriously injured when a motorcycle crashed into spectators at a bikers' rally, has died in hospital.
The accident happened just before 2200 BST on Tuesday at Bassetts Pole on the Warwickshire/Staffordshire border.

Police said the 37-year-old from Birmingham died on Wednesday after sustaining serious leg injuries. Three other people received minor injuries.

The biker, 28, broke his wrist. He has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

It's like holding a football match on junction 6 of the M6

Local resident

The motorcyclist, from Bartley Green, Birmingham, was detained following treatment at George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton.

Warwickshire Police said they would not be releasing the dead woman's name until Thursday.

A 19-year-old man from Coleshill, Warwickshire, was released from hospital on Wednesday after treatment for minor injuries.

High-speed stunts

Two other people were hurt in the crash, a 37-year-old man from Erdington, Birmingham, and a woman, 26, from Oldbury, West Midlands.

Neither is thought to be badly injured.

Police say the motorcyclist was negotiating a chicane close to the McDonald's restaurant when he lost control of his machine and ploughed into a crowd of spectators.

The Bassetts Pole area is popular among bikers, and every Tuesday night hundreds of spectators gather to watch riders perform stunts.

The majority of those attending are responsible and law-abiding motorcyclists

Inspector Mark Payne

Crowds of up to 2,000 people have been known to gather there for rallies.

One local woman said the event should have been banned long ago.

"It was not a case of if there is an accident its always been a case of when there is an accident," she said.

"You have got people standing there with small children in front of them watching.

"They're on the kerb - there's nothing between them and these high-performance, high-speed vehicles."

Another local resident said: "It's like holding a football match on junction 6 of the M6."

First accident

Two police patrols were on duty in the area on Tuesday night but had been called away to other incidents at the time of the crash.

Inspector Mark Payne, who is leading an investigation into the incident, defended the way the event was handled.

"We've policed it in this way since 2001 and this is the first time there's been an accident here.

"The gathering is not organised and consists of motorcyclists who gather to show off their vehicles, but the majority of those attending are responsible and law-abiding motorcyclists."

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident.

As we approached the Pole last evening, some bikes were leaving, three of which were wheely-ing down the Queen's Highway. Here we go, thought I.

We were there until after 9, it hadn't happened then, Pete heard it on the News this morning - BUT as we came out (round the back of the pub carpark straight onto the island, the 'correct' path) I couldn't believe it - the nearside carriageway was full of spectators - you know, families, kiddies in pushchairs - lots of nice "responsible" adults!!!! - all over the road, a MAIN road - there were cars parked ON the island and people spilling into the road from that side too and Yes, I expect that had they been mown down by a juggernaut THAT would have been the fault of the bikers too, would it????

The road back up past the Belfry was similarly congested with people and cars, so Pete took the other rd down to Middleton and when we got to the new island there had been an accident there (remains of a blue bike laid on the island with 3 or 4 Police cars - no sign of what/who had been involved there). The coppers can't be everywhere.

I don't condone arsing about on cars or bikes by any stretch of the imagination and I do feel very sorry for the injured spectators - in this case -as it now sounds as if the action took place off the highway (Pete thought they said 'on the island' though?) and if that is the case, then it could quite as easily have been any of us. If morons are going to do that sort of thing amongst the crowds legitimately at the venue, then I am quite sure that the Police and the licensees will both want to see an end to it and quite rightly too, in my opinion. I have no desire to put my life in that kind of danger.

Jenny

PS When they used to host a bike meet at the Falcon pub (up the rd from the Waterman) the pub used to provide marshalls who supervised the parking, turned all cars away, and got the bikes safely on and off the road. It was impressively organised. Due to Police pressure, because of the antics ON the highway, it was stopped. A number of the participants were actually professional/semi professional stunt riders who should have known better really I suppose - but they were bloody good! - but of course some oiks tried to emulate them and the inevitable happens. (Don't think there were any fatalities, though) End of meet!

I will start by saying, my thoughts go out.........

to the Ladies family, very very sad.

Secondly I will say I hope the rider is never allowed to ride again and gets a hefty sentence. Knowing our legal system he will claim he has post traumatic stress and get community service ..........poignant at present.

But I do think that if you spectate at these unofficial events, you are asking or rather putting yourself in possible danger. Its pretty blatantly obvious that if you stand at the side of the road when there are stunts being performed by total amateurs that you could be in danger.

I am not saying it was her fault, but if you go to those sort of events you are leaving yourself wide open to possible, albeit fluke accidents.

If I had kids I would never ever take them to an unofficial stunt thing like that. I personally would never spectate along the road outside boxhill. when I was at the Ace Cafe watching some of the burnouts it was from a distance.

the more the public spectate at these unofficial/amateur events then the more they will be played up to and the more accidents will happen.

No Rich, the number is issued but not the plate. When you buy a new vehicle the dealer fits them but if one gets damaged you have to replace it yourself. The standard size for a bike is about 9 by 9 inches, almost big enough to hang-glide on. The font size is about two and a quarter inches high so it can be read by an orbiting spy satellite.
Bikers like to fit smaller custom plates but if the police stop you they often issue a warning but they can give you a ticket. The penalty is a fine, but not penalty points.
