The gist of it is the only thing electrical that works is oil and neutral light and starter motor.
I fitted a new reg rec plug today as I had used spade connectors until I got one after replacing reg rec, all worked fine before but after fitting went to start and seemed to run on 1 cylinder for a couple seconds then die, tried again started ok for a few seconds then stopped and now just turns with no start, headlights, indicators, horn, side stand light, all not working, I have checked all the fuses I can find and am now stumped.

Hi Mike.

First thing to do is disconnect the reg/rec and see what happens.

Probably a silly question but have you checked the main 30amp fuse by the solenoid? :-0)

Reg red disconnected exactly the same, have checked the 30amp fuse under the red plug with 4 wires if that's the one and its fine

What Bbird is it, Mike

I haven't got a Bbird now so I'm not sure about a red plug. The main fuse is by the starter solenoid on the RHS of the bike. The spare 30amp fuse is also kept there. Anyone who can look and confirm Mike is checking in the right place? I can have a look at the circuit diagrams when I know which year we are talking about. @tu*

I don't think so, Mike.

The main fuse on any bbird I had was on the RHS by the starter solenoid. ideally we need Jaws to see this or someone with the same year bird as you which I believe is a 98 carby!. According to the 99 diagram the fuse you describe is the PGM FI fuse on a red wire with a white stripe..

IF the main fuse blows then absolutely nothing works - that is the experience on my 03.

Like Centaur I would disconnect the reg/rec from the loom, charge the battery and see what happens.

The things not working are all supplied through the ignition switch.

Posting is a pain in the ass.

A five minute phone call asks and answers questions much easier. :-0)

Charged battery again and disconnected reg rec then tried it but just turned over until battery was dead again, main fuse is on left on my 98 carb

What happens on the dash when you turn the ignition on, Mike?

Describe the main fuse, Mike. Are we talking blade fuse or in line?

When I switch on ignition, oil light and neutral light come on, oil light goes out as bike turns over. When I switch on lights none work including clocks, indicators and horn don't work. The fuse is a blade fuse in a holde that has wire in and out from battery and a red blue containing 4 wires that covers the fuse.

Honestly have no idea !!
Just to check though.. Was it ONLY the reg rec that was touched before it all went tits up ?
Was it all working before you got busy on the reg rec ?

See post#13 for a picture of what your main fuse looks like. It is on the RHS.
As Jaws and Andy have said it can't be blown or you would have no electrics. Power to everything you are missing comes through the ignition switch. Do you have a small multimeter?

That's the one, it's on the left on mine. Nothing else was touched. Does it matter the order of the 3 yellow wires to reg rec? That's the only thing I can think of May have changed. I do have a multimeter

Any order of yellow will do, Mike.

Just had dinner with a couple of glasses of red wine so not thinking too logically. :-0) I'll put my thinking cap on tomorrow. You need to check that all the fuses have voltage when the ignition is turned on. You have fecked a connection somewhere and we need to track it down. Not too difficult with a meter. :-0)

No Mike.. order of yellow wires is not important at all..
If I could find ANY of my bloody manual or wiring diagrams I might be able to help out but they have all been stuffed 'somewhere safe' while the office gets converted back to a living room and I have every thing junked up in a big pile in the back garden !!!:cry::xm
