Avon Storm bullshit!!

bmwdumptruck

Come on you Hatters
I reckon I ought to update this thread as things might be happening regarding my iffy Avons. Not sure what if anything, but we'll wait and see.

Needless to say, i've been contacted, and a little more interest is being shown in the issues I've had with the Storm and Distanzia front tyres.

As above,I've been contacted by Gary, and things is in the pipeline, @tu*we shall see what they think of the tyre when it arrives at Avon!!

My first reply from him said a pair of the new 3's are on there way to a Leeds depot for evaluation:dunno:, but then he retracted that as it was for someone else. You maybe Ian?

He's gone on holiday now, so have to wait till he gets back.

My first and second front were from very different batches. The first was a very early one and the current was pretty fresh out the mould.

I can't progress with resolving my issue until my bikes back from the repairers but I do wonder if I've been unlucky or if they all have this issue.

I'm finally able to load a photo of the rear Avon on my ST1300.
It HAS been the correct pressure, despite someone trying to tell me I had been running too low a pressure ( 42psi) and has really uneven wear on the right. It's done 8,100miles.
The left side has about four mill tread left. The right side is on the markers ( being changed Friday).

They are VERY grippy, Steve, took a bit of getting used to as I was used to just "tipping" in and the bike would go down, these lean over if you know what I mean!!, the "tipping" bit is where it had flattened off I think!! looking closely at this front picture I'm staring at the "left" side as I look at it, does it seem to be flattening off to you?? :dunno:

If that was a car I'd suggest getting your tracking checked.

I may have mentioned this previously but I'm a big fan of the Storms having clocked up over 100k miles on them between the ST1100 & the Bird.

The only time I've ever noticed any sort of mismatched wear was living in MK but it was no wehre as severe as you seem to be experiencing.

On the left are Greybirds Storm II Ultras , on the Right Silverbirds Storm 3Ds.

Both have done around 4k miles

the left side, ie the right side in the picture is flattening off yes. which is weird in its self as normally the other side goes.

I've been waiting a week to hear back so I can get mine swapped

Well I've finally heard from Avon, I'll be dropping my Storm Ultra 2's back to the original supplier in the next few days for collection, and should be getting a pair of 3D's to try out too.

Gary from Avon did say about the Balancing that the date code is always at the overlap, so will be the heaviest point, so best to set the date code opposite the valve for best balancing. Might save a bit o lead.

Just had my 3D's fitted, Gary said they take a bit o weight to balance them, he's not wrong. Fitter tried three different places for the rear tyre on my rim, 100gms, 95gms and 130gms. We gave up in the end and left it at 130gms. Im going to check it on my balancer tonight before I stick them back in the bike.

I then need to try them out before Friday and my trip to Normandy at the weekend.

Watch this space.

I'll give him a nudge as I've still not heard anything.

I do have a lot of balancing weights on my front wheel. More than any other tyre I've had .... and it's right next to the valve!

is grey bird your every day bike and silver bird your 'polisher'? them cans is minging underneath Mikey! lol,

on a serious note, the rear tyre on the grey bike looks like the rubber is old and hard, like an old OEM Dunlop that came on my XJR, sportsmax I think, but long time ago now....it was shit in the wet, hard as an old dog turd....and twice as slippy when wet. might just be a bad picture like....:-0):dunno:

Greybird (now flown the nest) still had the Italian dirt form my off earlier this year on her.

Tyres were new in May & had about 3k miles on them.

SHall we settle on a bad picture ;o)

Had a very enjoyable hour or so earlier this evening riding around the lanes between here, Toddington, Luton, Hitchin, Henlow, Shefford back to here, with my daughter following on her 125. @tu*

Wasn't allowed to do more than 60, she said, well I almost complied:-0).

New 3D's feel good so far, certainly sharpen up the steering. I need a run up the motorway before Friday, to check out motorway speeds, before I head for France this weekend.
I've also noticed the back wheel almost touches the garage floor on centre stand, and that's without a shock spacer. You guys with spacers may find the bikes don't stand up on the centre stand.
