Avon Storm bullshit!!

Come on you Hatters
I had an email client setup with a typo in the return address so no wonder I've not heard anything in a while :bang:

My emails to him keep bouncing back. They must have a really tight firewall or something. Really frustrating trying to deal with him when every mail takes two or three attempts to send.

Just had a pair of Michelin pilot roads appear for my Pan. I've gone for a 3 on the front and a 2 on the rear(hopefully get bit better life from the 2) ordered from Oponeo, they've a glitch in their price for the 2, only ?83 delivered:eek:, so ?190 for a pair of top spec Michelins :yo:

Just been on the phone to Avon Tyres today, spoke to Pete Mcnally who proceeded to tell me the excessive wear/cupping on the right side of the front tyre was because of roundabouts :dunno: so why does the rear not wear the same says I ??? he then tried more bullshit, before I told him it was total rubbish!! and I didn't want to hear more, :dunno:

surely that is the expected wear pattern for a Bird that is permanently on a trailer:dunno:

Except when it falls off, which I would have thought evens things out a bit, depending which side it lands on.

Well I've just done a bit over a thousand miles this weekend down to Normandy and back.
Firstly, the 3D's were absolutely rock steady down the Motorways to the Tunnel and Autoroute towards Rouen. Calais to Abbeville was pretty wet, but all was fine.
We headed south skirting around Rouen to Evraux then round and back up to Caen, mostly on D roads. Really heavy rain around Caen to Bayeux, in the Dark too. But no slips, although speeds were mostly only in the twentys as I just couldn't see anything.
Saturday was better, but we only did local stuff, visiting museum ect. Although we did hit one patch of farmers mud that ran for about a mile, scary stuff, like riding on ice, both front a rear sliding around, but can't blame the tyres. Bloody froggy farmers:eek:
Sunday we headed south, D999 to St Hilaire is stunning, great test of the 3D's, easy to get the pegs scrapping. Carried on south towards Laval, then across towards Mayenne and then back north to Bayeux and Arromanches. Last bit a bit wet, but otherwise great roads, again mostly D roads.
Monday we left Arromanches in horrendous rain, which stayed with us all the way to Boulogne. Only slips were caused by the French overbanding, but the 3D's picked back up once off it.
So after a thousand miles I am pretty impressed with them. But I have to say, if I was paying for them, I'd reject the rear with its 130gms of weight to balance it. If I get time,I'm going to pop the rear back off and spin it round and try a couple of other positions to see if I can find its best position. The wheel just looks rediculous with 2 and a bit full strips of lead weights stuck on it

Spoke to Gary yesterday and now I'm sitting in FWR having a new pair put on.

No messing here : in the door and in two mins my bike was in the bay being sorted.

I'm getting the date stamp put opposite the valve so it'll be interesting to see how much weight needs to be applied.

So far all good ... except for the pissing weather. It always rains when I have fresh tyres :(

No Dumpster you can't blame the misses

Avon storms, 2 fronts flat spotted off centre...
Pirelli Angels, awesome. 1500 miles up and around Scotland... yes I actually rode my bike to Mcbash...

Standard suspesion, Jaws lowered pegs. Keep intending, but then forgetting, to cut the blobs down.

....and back to the Avon's h1d1ng2

With the date stamp opposite the valve the front needed no weights at all.

The rear still took some.

Quality service from FWR as always and thumbs up to Avon for sorting me out.

The real proof will be when I get some miles on these.

Storm No 2 did the same as storm number 1. Flat spot on RH side. Why would I buy another.

Gary from Avon did say about the Balancing that the date code is always at the overlap, so will be the heaviest point, so best to set the date code opposite the valve for best balancing. Might save a bit o lead.

From that, am I to take it Avon don't mark their tyres with a red dot which (as far as I'm aware) you would normally put next to the valve?

Not got Avons on at the moment so can't go look.

They do not mark them with a red dot. The date stamp goes opposite the valve.. But Gary is pushing for a red dot during the next round of upgrades as fitters do not seem to get the message ( even as witnessed by my self, when they are told very specifically right as the tyres are being fitted !! )

Thanks John.

That would explain why the last Storm I had had 130g of balance weights on the rear.

The Z8s are starting to square off so looking to change them in a month or so. If I go back to Avons (torn between another set of Z8, but the updated O/M spec, the 3D-XM or the Pirelli Angel GT) I will make sure the fitter positions them on the wheel correctly.

When I had mine fitted last week I told the fitter. He replied with "I always mount them with the white dot next to the valve" and pointed to it on the tyre he had in his hands. I insisted on the date stamp being opposite the valve and that's how he did it ... resulting in zero weights on the front wheel and some of the rear.

I thought he was holding my new 3D Storm but perhaps not.
