Never had an issue gapping iridium plugs on my race bikes, and one of them ran rough as hell due to the gap been wrong!

That is up to you.. You obviously know FAR more than the people who make the plugs g0551p

I agree with andybird's comment on iridium plugs, I don't see the point on any bike, they don't seem to last any longer & can only supply the spark provided by the coils, where is the benefit :dunno:

Having said that I have gapped plenty without problems, just wont spend out the extra on them for my own bikes until I can be convinced of the benefit

32000 mile service intervals and again, another who knows more about these things than the manufacturers..

Its amazing how many folk this applies to.. I guess you are all rich and famous cos companies like NGK, Denso, Champion etc must pay you a fortune for your advise and know how !! @tu* :-0)

Well was still the same on the way home :dunno:when I redid the air box boots I fired it up on the centre stand. .stuck it in 6th and took it up to 110-120 rolled off then back on and it was perfect. ...did this twice...both times no stutters.. ...

I never claimed to know more than the manufactures, but when it doesn't run correct it doesn't run! See here http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/tech_support/spark_plugs/faqs/faqpregap.asp?mode=nml

As a matter of interest, why did you put a link to a generic info page ?

Find me one on a manufacturers site that recommends iridium or platinum tipped plugs are gapped and I will happily stand down and apologise to all and sundry

I'm certainly not rich or famous I just know from servicing bikes for the last few years that there seems no proof of the makers claims, we seem to need to change them just as often as bog stock NGK's :dunno:

Here is another generic link http://densoiridium.com/faq.php
The reason I put this is,you said that gapping such plugs will knacker them! This may be the case if your rough with them, but I had to adjust mine on my race bike due to bad running on first start up after swapping an old plug.
I will admit that I have never had to gap any plugs on my road bikes but had to on my race bikes like I said.
So lads I raced with ran using Brisk plugs which looked like bullets, very strange looking plug indeed,no ground electrode!
After all this chap was looking for a possible answer to his ill running Bird and I gave him a possible issue which I have encounterd in the past which has affected myself.

Cor, look what I have started, handbags flying all over the place.%$fan

the point I was making, and asking for someone to confirm as I was working from a distant memory, is that carb Birds do not need expensive Iridium plugs but will run perfectly well with them. FI birds I believe benefit from expensive iridium plugs and are not happy on normal plugs.

Presumably a carb bird with iridium plugs extends the plug service life to 32000 miles, so overall it is probably worth doing. I have just changed the iridium plugs on my FI at 64000 and the old ones looked pretty decent to me.

Personally I always check the gap when the plug comes out of the box but can't remember having to adjust one for any bike I have owned. Didn't know iridium plugs shouldn't be adjusted though. Assuming JAWS is right. But as he has clearly mistated the size of Bird fuel tanks twice in as many days who knows what to believe?:dunno:

OK, originally bird carbs were fitted with normal plugs.. But in 1997 they were changed in the oem specs to CR9EHIX-9
The old standard plugs had a service interval of 8000 miles while the iridiums have a service interval of 16000 miles.
After 2001 ( digi dash models ) they were changed again to errr... brain fart.. another number ! which has 32000 mile service intervals

I did thk this as I said the air box leg is not seated in the slot in the frame it won't go forward enuff once every thing is tightened up....but it was seated in there before I did the service.....so now both air ducts sit around maybe half inch higher then they should....this is y i said it fills like the air is not being sucked cleanly when getting back on the throttle. ....I have sum coils/leads/plugs from a 5000 odd mile old 2000 x11 coming as John suggested I might have a dodgy plug/lead which I haven't chked yet....so once these r fitted I hope it sorts the problem. ..if not then it's the air/ducts I'm sure......so is there a rubber boot what goes over the little Leg on the fr of the air box??which then locates in the gap in frame ??...I can't see y the airbox won't go forward enuff.....feking bike !. .the coils were 150 quid each....the leds were 8 or 14 quid each depending on which it is...and plug caps r 44 quid each......nuff feking dear! !!

mine aint got extenshion or rubber boot that fit into frame ,it sits just short [dont really know what it for or why ,perhaps to route choke cable!]the dams i am talking about are under the plastic infills at side of tank just about below the silver securing bolt that you see from top looking down ,or jut about whare intake is cut into fairing for carbs air..if these aint right she will draw hot air from oil cooler and turbulent air from front of bike...i had this problem before ....got bike set up on dyno and she run great but on the road run like pile of shit at constant throttle...some whare on the site this has been discussed before and a diagram of infills/dams shown..some on here have even made there own out of bits of plastic..just check them to be sure they are still there.and fitted correctly...
