On the road, found out that the 'Bird hits the rev limiter in second at about 117 thanks to a tvat in a Merc SL deciding that he did own the road, but normally try to keep her under the ton. Ran her at a steady 140 in Germany for about half an hour before the neck muscles had had enough and clocked 168 on a runway. All indicated of course.

Also saw 185 in an XJ220 before I bottled it, again on a runway and done Mach 1.8 (about 1200 mph at altitude) in the back seat of a Phantom, but does that count?

One of the GPS's I have has a recorded max speed on it was 250mph ..
Rest assured it was NOT on a bird

It was recorded while driving my Smarty !!!

Well - I was really miffed when I found out that 150mph :yo: indicated only meant 135mph actual - well gutted infact!!

But it was on a girlie pink one, so I was quite chuffed (and it had been faster with a proper rider on board!!! _ one with way more skill and bottle than me!!!!!  )

Deduct 10% I am afraid.. that is pretty much what almost all Bird speedo's are out by.

Highest top speed through the timing lights was 184.6 on an almost bog standard carb one,,
Highest through the traps on the EFI is 176 .. same conditions more or less and I actually weighed a few lbs less when I did the EFI run ( there was a year bewteen them.. I have not just taken a dump ! )
Two thoughts spring to mind - 1st does the mis-reading of the speedo mean that our mileage is not accurate on the clocks? I understand that many guys have done around 100,000 on a bird, does that mean that its really only done 90,000?
On that basis missing a service by a few hundred miles is not a disaster!
2nd, why the big difference between the carb and FI bikes top speed, when in fact most reports / test state that the FI bikes (certainly 1999 - 2000ish) made 164bhp against the 162bhp of the 1996 carb ones...and anyway 2bhp is feck all, even if they were the same why the 8mph difference? Thought the FI bikes were also a few kg lighter, though I realise that weight has less of an inpact on top speed as it does in acceleration!

Correct.. the mileage readin is out by the same amount

100,000 miles ?? Peanuts.. try in excess of a million miles now !

Re the top speed difference and the tests..
Cos the tests are done by people who do not really know their arse from their elbow most of the time !

We, the owners, are the only true testers

And that figure.. it is fantasy land I am afraid.. A stock xx will produce 133 to 135Bh at the rear wheel.. the only place it matters

The difference in top speed is where and and how the power is produced.
For instance, a Triumph Rocket 3 has a torque figure in excess of 120 ft lbs.
It can pull tree stumps !
Yet it runs out of puff by about 120ishMPH ( I believe )

To have a high top speed the engine needs to produce good power fairly high up the rev range.. other wise it simply runs out of puff..

If ever you want to do a top speed run on your bike always take it right to the red line in 4th and 5th.. it is the only way to get it up there ! :p

I agree with that.........

I have heard the guys who race here in Dubai say the same thing.

remember that torque and power are inextricably linked, you will not get good torque without the power.

What is the torque figures for the BB compared to the Rocket 3 for instance?

About 40ft lb lower ! :p

Smix.. Wow .. and I thought for ages I was the only person who thought that !

Go Gorden Go Gorden Go Gorden Go Gorden Go Gorden Yeeehaaaa !

Indicated 160 on A39 near minehead just before the 30mph limit. That was on my old pinkbird.
Fastest ever for me was 191,on my modified '93 GSXR1100WR,on a 2 mile runway through electronic timing lights on a measured mile.
Interesting to note that the speedo needle had gone past 200 & nearly up to 30 again........i think........it was all a bit of a blurrrrr........

171 on mates zzr1100 as indicated by police radar gun (which my mate was holding, it was also his bike)

165 on speedo last week on the bird and it was still pulling well.

good looking AND modest
my GPS is still showing 156 mph, after a "lively" dash home a bit back!! :dunno: I saw 175 on a "loaner" before I bought my bird, one of the reasons I bought it!!

On my 600 Bandit on the shotton paper mill by pass I got 132 mph on the clock

on the Bird on the same road I got 155 mph on the clock and there was more to go on the throttle, so I assume the bird would easliy do the 170 180 mark on a flat straight road
