But you are right, stock Bird vs stock Gixxer, don't think the Bird would see which way it went,

I find my 750k5 very comfy BTW, but thanks for talking sense. :-:

I must apologize for my ignorance, but I thought that perhaps as you were on a Blackbird club site you might have been a fan? Is one of us missing something?

He is a fan of them if they are being used for the correct purpose, TOURING...........quickly..

You wouldn't buy a Ford Mondeo and spend thousands modifying it so it would keep up on a track with a Lotus Elise when for less than the cost of the mods you could have bought an Elise in the 1st instance.

Well, there are some people stupid enough...ME....
I have spent considerably more on modifications to my Bird than it would have cost me to buy a brand new gixxer 1000, Hayabusa or ZX12 (or ZX14), this doesn't include the cost of the original bike.
I have done this for fun, and because I wanted something different. I knew 100% finacially would never even get half my money back when it was sold... It is fun for me to have people on genuinely quick bikes surprised that "an old barge" easily keeps up with them, and infact goes by quite regularly.
Ofcourse, I would have been more sensible throwing money at a more dedicated race bike in the first place... But then, it just looks like a faster race bike...and wheres the fun in that?
I get the "What the Hell is that...?" brigade trying to work out what it is (even though still has same tail piece, headlight and XXX on the side..)
To be fair, even I wouldn't do it to a Mondeo, as they are shit and boring in the first place, I did however spend a huge amount modifying a SAAB 9000 turbo, keeping it front wheel drive. This would have been lost on a track by the crappy Lotus too, but on everyday roads I could easily outrun them...
Still, each to their own, but everyone needs to realise there are some idiots with no sense of what is sensible, or good value... Just enjoy the fun factor and seeing peoples faces when they say.... "You have done what....? To... What....?

Agree Wolfie. I know where there is a beautiful Subaru engine I could easily drop into my Volks Campervan......but.....with an 18 year old son on the policy the insurance is an arm and a leg already!

FREEDOM

Good on yer Turbonut, it`s good to have free will to do as you please, without fear of ridicule. That is while the ruddy " do-gooders" leave us alone! :yo:

Now I must go, I`ve got to figure out how to get this Buick 5.7L V8 block in my Blackbird frame:dunno:

Hmmmmmmmmm. Maybe, just maybe, a few tall stories here?

My best top speed is around 850MPH in the rear seat of a Jaguar fighter.

Unless you count c2000MPH that the earth revolves at.

No tall story from me ;)

Incidentally, the fastest I ever saw anyone run was this past Sunday. A guy called Frank from Holland came over here, like he does every year, to participate in our annual event at RAF Woodbridge. Here's the ticket :)

aha yes, nice street van. goes like shit of a shovel.

Only men with very small willies have to lie about speed or handling.

I am slow and crap compared to most and a riding god who is a mad bastid compare to a few.

240mph is a nice way to die, i reckon , dont think i would know much about it but the fear/blood rushing would be feckin ace.

Spot bollock there I used to have a ball in me old 9000 abusing the local boy racers. no one expects a burgandy old mans car to be putting out well over 200bhp
I don't have the money now cause of the garrage I'm building but when I've some spare it will be spent on making some old oddity into a road rocket. buying one off the shelf just isn't the same
I've just bought an old mkIII cortina for my brothers birthday and am looking forward to seeing what he does with it.
A little imagination goes a long way in the right hands so long as the mind is slightly unhinged

Everybody knows a Blackbird will do 175+ mph, but I would be interested to know just how many of you owners ever get near that?

Lets assume that you were on a German autobahn at the time...

Personally, I believe that a lot of owners never get anywhere near these kind of speeds, and they like to own a 'bird just because its just about the best bike ever, not because they want to ride at 175mph...

Me first...when I was in Germany last...got the bike up to about 145 - 150, but nerves and then traffic got the better of me. Don't know about you lot, but it all gets a bit blurry at that speed, and don't feel quite in control...(I know, call me a sissy, I can take it..... at least I don't ride a Harley...)

First to admit to hitting the rev limiter in 6th gets a beer on me!!:yo:

Would love to know what my true speed was, but on an autobahn between Koln und Dresden on my way to Auschwitz, Poland, May 2006 I achieved 160mph.
I was rather chuffed because I'm (ahem!! cough cough) 16 stone, and the bike was laden with my 20 year old son (skinny git) and Oxford Sport panniers and tank bag. Not a wobble.
Exciting part was when my boy decided to stick his head around me to see what dad's speed was. Visor open, just a smidge, into 160mph slip stream. HaHa! Rest of the trip was with son, wearing sun glasses, cowering behind dad's larger frame.!!
Was a good trip though.

Deduct 10% I am afraid.. that is pretty much what almost all Bird speedo's are out by.

Highest top speed through the timing lights was 184.6 on an almost bog standard carb one,,
Highest through the traps on the EFI is 176 .. same conditions more or less and I actually weighed a few lbs less when I did the EFI run ( there was a year bewteen them.. I have not just taken a dump ! )

Sadly, John's right. 201mph on the speedo down Bruntingthorpe, datalogger showed true speed to be 179.8mph, 11% over-read
