With all of the passionate anthems that are played and sung to, why do we have to listed to that dreadful dirge that is the national anthem for the UK and not England? It should be something like Land of Hope And Glory
When I used to follow F1 I always thought the Italian national anthem was by far the most upbeat.

England should sing Jerusalem.
Wales should sing Men of Harlech.
Scotland should find someone to put words to The Gael (written and composed by a Scot and known to most folk as the theme to Last of the Mohicans).

Ireland can sing The Irish Rover.... but they must be well and truly pissed.

If it can be a low scoring game tomorrow, like 5-3 to Wales then Italy can remain in 4th place a while longer. England need to win with a bonus point and good points difference, and for Ireland to lose badly next weekend. Very unlikely, but possible.

Quite agree Simon it is a dreadfully dreary dirge and when sung fully not very kind to some members of the union. Personally I’ve always liked I Vow To Thee My Country. I find the lyrics especially inspiring.

Bollox....it's a dreary song.
What's the point in singing about a battle we won 700 and some years ago against an English army when we're playing against the French, Irish, Italians or just about every other nation apart from England..?
Time to move on from the SNP Party's favourite rabble rousing singalong and find something more relevant.

Used particularly for rugby is:

Ireland's Call

Author: Phil Coulter
Sew
Come the day and come the hour
Come the power and the glory
We have come to answer Our Country's call
From the four proud provinces of Ireland

CHORUS
Ireland, Ireland Together standing tall
Shoulder to shoulder
We'll answer Ireland's call

From the mighty Glens of Antrim
From the rugged hills of Galway
From the walls of Limerick And Dublin Bay
From the four proud provinces of Ireland

CHORUS

Hearts of steel And heads unbowing
Vowing never to be broken
We will fight, until We can fight no more
From the four proud provinces of Ireland

CHORUS

With the Ireland rugby team representing both the Republic and Northern Ireland, 'Ireland's Call' was scripted to help cross sectarian and national divides and adopted as the rugby anthem in 1995. However, at home matches in Dublin the Irish national anthem, the Soldier's Song, is also sung.

Without knowing it you have endorsed why Flower of Scotland is the national song - it reflects on and celebrates the only time we have won anything.

I think you've spent too much time in France.

The song has two themes....

1. We gave Edward the second and his army a good kicking and we won't see the like of the men who did it again.

2. We can become a nation again. Funny....as far as I'm aware we ARE a nation and have been for hundreds of years.

Neither of which make much sense as a national anthem.
