To be accurate the ball is in play for about twenty minutes.
This can be extended by piling on top of the ball incessantly toward the end of the brawl by the winning team to kill time.

I doubt there is anybody who didn’t think the ball was down but as you say nothing conclusive To overturn the refs decision.
I did a bit of timing during the game - the French sin bin player missed 6 minutes and 22 seconds of actual play.
The running and handling skills of the 145kg New Zealander that France brought on were….well, they weren’t. Ballast and battering ram.
And could have been more.
The egg would have been over boiled in that time
