Hmmmmmmm this'll be controversial............unlike you Wolfie!
Every culture has or has had it's God. Ancient agrarian cultures had their fertility gods - Romans had their Pantheon - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have their 'One God of All'.
Basically people the world over like to believe in the existence of something transcendant. Don't know why, they just do, everywhere.
My view is that any form of religious belief can be simply explained as a person's natural psychological defence mechanism against all the shite that life throws at us. It's nothing more than that. Some 'need' it more than others, and get into it more than others because the shit we all get dealt in life affects people differently and some get more than others.
You can study the moral argument for 'it's' existence, you can study the ontological argument, the first cause argument and the argument from design - I'd listen to scientific proof and be prepared to be convinced, and that's exactly what I ask for when these buggers come bangin' on my door on a Sunday with little kids dressed in tiny suits with little briefcases in tow............kids should be playing and having fun on a Sunday not being brainwashed into following parental beliefs!
What's with the fishy things on the backs of the cars? They're not all Pisceans then? Anyone noticed a link between these fish things and appalling driving standards?
I don't know mate - I supposed until a point in life where you really need 'it', you'll never find 'it'...........

If there is anything out there I believe its some sort of spaceman so many of the things mentioned in the bible etc come down to rockets people in space suits and even helicopters.
As far as the god thing goes I think Samster is right , many people can only cope with death and all the other shite we get with the help of a bloody great crutch and thats all it is.
However if there is a god then he is a bastard coz I wouldnt put a rat through all the crap we have to put up with! Oops!$%3un

Whatever you post, remember to not get confused between religion and churches. One is a tool, the other one is either a way to make the tool available to those who want to access it OR a money-raising scheme.
Remember also that seeing god as an old bearded man says more about you than anything else.
Also, before you go down the argument 'if he exists he is a bastard cos all the misery in the world', consider that he might have given us the choice of what we human beings do, letting us assuming responsability for our actions.
Either
1/ god doesn't exist, or
2/ he is all-controlling sadistic bastard who makes some suffer on purpose and some others be happy, so basically who denies us any freedom and direct us like a puppeeter
... OR...
3/ he created us AND left us the choice of what we do, making us free (choice=freedom) instead of his slaves as in 2/.

The big mistake folk make is thinking God is one being..
Rubbish ! God ( as we percieve the entity ) is ( or was ) an alien race that possibly seeded us ( homo-sapient ) for a possible food source or maybe just for a larf.
They then either got bored or forgot about us.. or maybe they are still watching and waiting to see what we will do next ?

We have a witness here at work,
who told me that jesus died for our sins and gave us a clean start, god wants to prove to us that we can not live without his help so he is watching us and not helping.
God left us to ourselves so we could prove to ourselves that we need his help, which is why all the crap we have to put up with happens.

Rob, so you choose number 1 because if god existed it'd be an evil puppeteer... this is your choice, and it cannot be argued with. I personally choose number 3 and like to believe I have been given the choice to be good or evil, and to realise myself before I go. When I feel at one with what surrounds me I reveal god in myself, that simple. I don't have an answer for the 'natural' suffering in the world (earthquakes, famine, illness etc) but all human acts is the choice of human species - we have only ourselves to blame for that. Making peace within ourselves and around us is a good start to end war though.
