Civil Liberties. What would you scrap?

I thought the thread was about what would civil liberties would you scrap, but picking on old Derek seems to be the theme.

Civil liberties is about freedom of speech also, so if DK states he would like to see Gay Pride marches banned, then good for him. Same as other saying he is wrong, good for them. Bashing the old boy over the barnet does seem to be a tad harsh.

I remember Brighton back in the late 70's / 80's, it was a right shithole. Then the old gay mob moved in and gradually it has changed to become a very cosmopolitan place. I wonder how it would look if the chavs had taken it over, little Chardennays running all over the place maybe.

Back to the thread - I would remove H & S except for heavy industry, if we have any left that is.

Derek, as far as I am aware, homosexuality is legal, but incest is not. Nor is paedophilia. This is a fundamental part of the argument - if something is legal, then it is considered acceptable by society - whether agreed with by all or not. If it is illegal, then it is not considered acceptable by society. That is the basis of the society we live in.
It is only in recent history that homosexuality has become legal, & bit by bit they change the goalposts by lowering the age of consent, how many people behind these law changes do you suppose are gay? how many pay young rent boys? how many of them are paedophiles?

I am interested in the comment about 'gays' being 'cured'.
i hadn't until now realised being gay was a disease or illness. You learn something new every day.
I am talking about before it was trendy to be gay, when it was frowned upon by society, having said that what would you call it as it certainly isn't natural?
As for Wooton Bassett, if memory serves me well was that not outlawed by plod? There is a difference between 'pride' and blatant provocation likely to end in a bloodbath. And, for the record, I did not comment on the Wooton Bassett post and i was glad that the march did not go ahead.

I too was glad that the march didn't go ahead but where do you draw the line? it's ok for people to march in protest at government cut backs etc & when someone in the crowd is being confrontational & ends up getting a smack everyone turns against the Police.

Er, I would call it 'natural'. Do not make the mistake that being gay is a recent 'invention'. It is simply that society is more liberal and accepting of such.

How is it natural? The natural order is that Man & woman = Children, it has to be that way for life to continue. Man & Man = shitty cock, Woman & Woman = porno movie.

You really believe that I think gayness is a modern invention? I have already said that in bygone days they tried to cure it.

Society is more liberal & accepting of such? so fecking what, it does not make it right no matter how many times you say it.
There are many people who on the face of it are all politically correct & accepting gays but when they are in what they regard as safe company they are very much anti gay, they just haven't the bottle to speak their true minds for fear of the pc brigade.

I know gay people [yes the old worn out cliche] & some of them are very nice, honest, hard working people but that does not mean I have to approve of every aspect of their lives, not that I am so egotistical to suggest they need my approval.

There have been places where canabalilsm was accepted .. not sure that made it OK.

What's acceptable depends more on the views of the "society" in the place/time ..

not sure that's actually relevent as such to a right/wrong debate.

Just 'cos a society accepts something doesn't actually mean it's right

The US and other places allow capital punishment .. the UK doesn't .. is one more right than the other .. which one ... and how do you measure/arrive at that conclusion ???

I think Andy was trying to explain that there is a difference between a psychological influence versus a genetic reason. It is intellectually lazy to assume that being gay is simply a state of mind. I'm no Gregor Mendel, but thankfully I have the intelligence to take a wider view. Some people don't, which is quite sad really ....... and yes, that is meant to sound like I'm taking the cerebral higher ground. :-: which I am ..... I'm claiming it, along with this magnificent high horse, for all free thinkers and wallowers of the gene pool deep end ........ pass the beach ball .......

As I hve already said, I don't agree with Derek on this one. However, I can''t help but think the debate has run its course now.

Well.
I thought it would cause some 'discussion', but not in this way.

Quickly off topic, and staying off topic for the rest of the thread.

Lets argue about something else now?

Why?:dunno:

My instinct says that although the hole that has been dug so far is already a gaping chasm, Derek has barely warmed his shovel up yet.

I have an opinion that differs from yours & you see that as digging a hole, how narrow minded is that?

I was prepared to let this topic drop but obviously you still have issues with it, maybe you need to make an appointment at your local drop in centre.
