Yesterday I had the great experience of my chain snapping at just over 100mph whilst accelerating. I knew the chain was knakered anyway, but thought "I'm sure it'l last a few more thousand" and it did.. About 2k after the front sproket started "clicking" if you've had a worn out chain and sprokets you'll know the sound.

Anyway, has anyone else out there experienced this most joyous of events and how did you sort it? the chain has obliterated the hugger and cracked the under side of the rear fairing bit, but of most concern is the hole which the chain has punched in the engine block bitty (duno correct name)the hole is about 1cm X the width of the chain in size in addition the sprocket cover has been cracked aswell. :violin:

Apart from the cosmetics is there anything I should be shitting myself about here?

Incidentally if anyone has a knakered chain, it should last about 2k miles after your mechanic tells you... 8rfl@

Jeeze, at least you still have both your legs. Sorry no experience on the bird with a snapped chain, due to the cost of replacing other parts that can get damaged its not worth putting off a chain/sprockets change.

Have you checked the clutch push rod, that may be bent?

If the engine/gearbox casing is holed, thats going to get expensive. brok3

That's the trouble with this popularity of biking and people scrimping on maintenance.

your going to get that as the bikes get older/cheaper, :dunno: I've struggled in the past to keep the bike up to scratch, :dunno:

Darwin awards here we come. Irritates the fuck outta me. People buying a cheap performance machine and expecting to maintain it like a moped. Braindead fuckers.

of course you cant run is on a moped allowance but you sure as can fuck run it on the cheap, and why not the bird is a cheap hack now, so run them cheap if you have to.

Wow, Only time one let go on me was pulling away from lights on an F650 - I ended up on the deck laying in front of a bus, new swingarm and underpants needed............

Well done for living through this, I say.
Mine went without warning a while back, luckily after a slow bend. The car driver behind me handed me the snapped chain like I could use it? It had just dropped out cleanly and left me with a revving engine and no power. I didn't even poo myself.

I'm always amazed at the state of some of the chains I see. Personally I would never ride a bike with a rusty chain, just not worth the risk. At best it will damage the swingarm if it goes, at worst you could lose your life!

If you ride a bike with a chain final drive, you must be prepared to put in the maintenance, if you can't be bothered, get a shafty.

hence the 2nd post. What a knob. Lucky no one was hurt. Maybe the damage will keep the scunner off the road? That's the trouble with this popularity of biking and people scrimping on maintenance.
Woah! calm down calm down! I didn't post this to get that kind of abuse!

It was unfortunately the provious owner who flogged me a heap of shit (the joys of buying on ebay!). And a mechanic didn't say 2k miles ago it was done; I knew this myself without him saying anything. I didnt see the point in buying a brand new chain and sprokets over the winter to watch them get fucked with all the salt and shit, some of us real bikers actually ride our bikes all year round rather than spend all our time talking shite and buying cheap accessories to make us feel adequate.. so I felt I'd leave buying till the roads were a bit better like anyone who knows anything would do, as it happens the chain let go before then. So I suppose I was scrimpping a bit... But fook sakes take it easy you might have a heart attack!

You knew the chain was shagged and you still rode it :bang::bang::bang:. Sorry mate but if your so cash strapped that you can't afford basic maintenance, then biking is not for you.

Duno, I can shine a torch through it, it's just in from the sprocket cover, looks like the metal's just kinda burst. As far as I can see all that will happen is chain lube will come through the hole if I dont plug it.. I've had engine running and there isn't any oil pissing out anywhere, and seems to go into gear and stuff ok.
