er, how can i put this - TOTAL 100% BOLLOX.

I have a spare Bird gearbox attached to a length of chain that I throw out the back when I need to stop. Works a treat.

that is surprising, you being a banker, i would of thought just lobbing your bonus out the back would stop the bike dead.

this is a bird thread in the coffee shop now, there is no topic now.

you want threads to stay on topic ask in the help section, no piss taking in there until question asked, in here anything goes.

LOL, I am learning that! 8rfl@ though I didn't really need help, just any opinions, didn't think it was relevant to help, thought I'd get flamed for that in there!

FUCK OFF IS IT DIRTBAG, ENGINE BRAKING CAN BE USED TO SLOW THE BIKE FROM MAX TO ABOUT 15MPH SAFELY AND SMOOTHLY without the need to touch the brake, this is controlled and intended you fucktard. Using the gears to slow down assures you are in the right gear when you stop braking as well.

Brakes are cheaper than gearboxes however so you redeemed youreslf a bit

never said it couldnt be used you fuckard.

brakes for slow, gears for go.

engine braking is for people who get their braking wrong.

pads are a lot cheaper than gearboxes, but each to their own.@tu*@tu*

So let me get this right, you are using your brakes but not using engine braking!!! So you are either braking with the throttle on, braking in neutral or braking with the clutch in.

Should you be near a bike, let alone a BIRD ?

Let me explain..

When you open your throttle and you are in gear you have drive, then when you close your throttle you have engine braking.

If you can read the road ahead well, then you have time to roll off, use engine braking to gentle reduce speed to that you want to make the corner.

Now you use brakes IN ADDITION to engine braking when
- to give you extra assurance that you will indeed reduce your speed in time for the bend
- engine braking is not enough for the pace you are riding
- you like stepping down the gearbox and listening to engine as you blip it between gears, but on each occasion you are disengaging your engine braking and therefore need to smooth out your overall braking.
- etc, etc

Hope that clears things up for you. @tu*

Let me explain..no need to been riding for millions of yrs and trillions of miles

When you open your throttle and you are in gear you have drive, then when you close your throttle you have engine braking. thus causing gears to work against each the wrong way, and chains to be put under pressure when you change the force

If you can read the road ahead well, then you have time to roll off,if you read the road well enough you dont need to roll off or slow down use engine braking to gentle reduce speed to that you want to make the corner.

Now you use brakes IN ADDITION to engine braking when
- to give you extra assurance that you will indeed reduce your speed in time for the bendtry reading the road better
- engine braking is not enough for the pace you are ridingthus causing the engine and gearbox all the wrong strains
- you like stepping down the gearbox and listening to engine as you blip it between gears, but on each occasion you are disengaging your engine braking and therefore need to smooth out your overall braking.thats sad
- etc, etc

Hope that clears things up for you. @tu*

its no wonder people cant get 9k out of a rear tyre, 48mpg, 30k from brake pads, ride smooth care for your bike

Due to the design of the Bird gearbox and in parity with most motorcycle gearboxes the radial strain whether under acceleration or braking is irrelevant and effectively the same as the radia forcs through the bearings are the same. You do not have direction thrust bearing determining this aspect, they are only there for end float etc. Shaft drive bike differ in the main as the drive is turned through 90 degreees and thereofr ehte forces act longitudinally instead of raidially.

In simple terms, for the layman, you is a koont.

by using engine braking you are putting the force on the other side of the gear tooth thus creating extra wear, you are also damaging the chain and sprockets. Gp racers use it as they get a new engine every 2-3 races. In the real world you are causing damage and you a sad person who thinks it is cool and you can ride. as said before look after your bike, brakes to slow gears to go.

^^^^^^^^^all bollox just roll off the throttle to slow down same as in car or my truck that way my brakes are there when I need them !!!

If your going down a steep hill 2up on ya bike will you use brakes all the way down or a lower gear ????

FFS when was the last time a Bird box broke?

I am going to try brakes only, no downchaging, as I leave the A2 at around ***ish with about 100 yards to the roundabout at the end of the slip road. If I am still upright, i'll figure out how to pull away in 6th at the roundabot.

That should be fun.

Who said anything about not changing gear?

so by using both sides of the gears and sprockets it is bad? How? Fecking KAFA

Extra wear twat, if you wear out both sides they are fucked, onlynwear our obe side and you can turn them around.@tu*

So are the cogs in the gearbox reversible?

How can you change down while moving without engine braking?

Unless you ride with the clutch in - I don't think even you would do that - other than going round corners of course.

yes.

errrr think you are taking the piss the andy. just in case you aint you ride along pull in clutch close throttle, select gear, let clutch out. match revs at no point are you using engine breaking.

Cheap pair of work boots only cost ?10 a pair, good for about 10k, just grip the bars tightly slam your feet to the floor I haven't noticed much brake fade in the wet or dry. I've just seen on ebay they are selling blocks of wood to strap to the sole for those who a re vertically challenged :) :bang::bang:
