Gears and brakes in unison provides smooth deceleration and the right gear for the speed for acceleration or further deceleration. Brakes only exerts strain on the drive system as the engine/gearbox momentum is trying to be stopped by the brakes, whereas both together means they are in unison both doing the same job at the same rate. Brakes are only effective when matched to drive train speed or with the clutch disengaged.

Advanced motircyclists are encouraged to use both together.

There is far more strain through a drive train under acceleration than under deceleration.
