Zero hours contracts

A clever move to make the unemployed now appear to be employed but with no wages.

Nope Derek.

A clever move by employers which allows them to take on multiple workers especially in busy times so they do not have to sack the slackers or even good workers when they no longer need them. They just don't give them any hours. On the plus side my lad started with Game on a zero hours contract to raise funds to do his Masters. When he proved reliable, hard-working and good at the job they steadily increased his guaranteed hours until he was working full time.:-0) They sensibly promoted a less capable lad over Ian when a vacancy arose because Ian had made it clear this was temporary employment and not a career choice.

But how does it affect the unemployment figures?

If someone who has been working for a company for many years & has a good work & attendance record suddenly finds themselves on a zero hours contract but has not been used for a while, will they be allowed to claim any benefits? basically I see it as a way that employers can lay people off without it costing the Government anything & the person who has contributed over the years suddenly finds themselves with no income & no way of obtaining one but slackers who have never worked a day in their life are in clover. I really hope I am reading it wrong but it doesn't look good.

They do claim benefits Derek.

They have to inform the benefits office each week what hours they have worked and any benefit due is paid in arrears. There was a long debate on this on Radio 4 about a year ago. The government are not involved. Generally speaking it is new employees who start on zero hours contracts and it has lead to many employers taking on peeps and giving them a chance they otherwise might not have had. zero hours contracts have been around for years. it was called casual labour! when you worked you got paid, when you didn't, you claimed social or dole....its not a new idea.

I always understood casual labour to be people working via an agency going where they were needed on the day, Zero hours contract I believe to be direct employment with the company cutting out the agency.

not strictly true Derek, a lot of building companies used to directly employ labourers on a daily casual basis. if you turned up at 0745 and they needed you and you looked like a big strong lad, they hired you and paid you in cash under the table. no contract. The term zero hours contract is pretty recent, but it means pretty much the same thing, and I guess it was invented by private companies, not the government. Only now they have to put it through the books. My son has worked in a council run leisure centre on a zero hours contract all through college and uni. they ring him when they need him, and if he can turn up, he gets paid, but the good thing he has rights, like accrued holidays and employment protection stuff, ie the contract terms!.
