If you want something you can see from any angle other than straight on avoid LCD.
Plasma I believe (although I stand to be corrected) burn out quickly and are expensive .
You can get a decent 28" flat screen for around ?270 nowadays.

As for make, I don't think there is a lot in it nowadays as a lot of them are made under license of the top companies, I saw a which report a couple of years back which named Beko one of the best televisions.

Plasma is v good, but I too have heard of problems of gas leakages.

If you do go for a crt tv, the 100 hrz ones have amazing picture quality.

I have been told that Plasma screens lose pixels at the corners, and that 'problem' is not covered by the warranty.

When you find the best deal / make / type, let me know will you, we may need a new one soon :dunno:

LCD has a life about double that of plasma, and despite what DK says they can be seen from all angles but do get a little brighter the nearer to the side you get. I know, I have one. Plasmas can leak gas, LCDs can lose pixels.

If you have the cash how about Bang and Olufsen? Super-expensive but probably the best although I'm told they use Samsung LCD panels. I think the 26" LCDs can be had from about 600 quid upwards and you pays your money and takes your choice.

Why not buy a mag from the newsagents? I've seen one dedicated to plasma and LCD tvs.

My brother has one and if you look at it sideways on it just looks like shadows, you certainly can't make the picture out, maybe you've got fish eyes. :p :f

As I've got a bite I think we should let the thread continue as it was intended and wait for people to give the bloke some advice.

Cheers Derek

If you are gonna spend good money on a screen in the next year it may be worth checking if it's HD (high definition) ready.

The next gen DVD's (Blu-Ray etc) and broadcasts will be in high definition within a couple of years. You gotta see it to believe it, it looks more real than real-life! Saw a dem of it Dixons the other week and was blown away

:eek: is this a "new" service Dixons offer?? and did you have to have the "spotty yoof" do the "blowing" or the "tidy" 16year old totty :rolleyes: that seem to work in all Dixon outlets!! :}

Got to be plasma HD ready, plasma leak but last about 7 years and can be recharged, most TVs don't last that long anymore anyways...

Got to be one of those, but not sure about the tech specs... Any techie can help? (pixel resolution important? contrast ratio, colour depth?) HERE

WOT TV & SCREEN........... DEFINITIVE ANSWER HERE

I work for Hitachi home appliances & I have been mucking about with this type of stuff for the last 11 years so......

I've just got back from 4 days training in Japan on this very subject, and therefore think I can offer a pretty sure answer to your question... These are my personal opinions based on my experience and knowledge of the subject. I'm sure there are people out there who may agree/disagree with my statements, but remember, this is my personal opinion.

Plasma screens:

If you want size over quality, plasma is your best bet. However, the screen resolution on bigger panels is poorer due to the pixel width being upwards of .9mm pitch (pixel to pixel). The sub-pixel pitch is poor at .6mm and therefore the whole image will appear grainy in panels over 42" wide.

37" Panels and smaller are better in that the pixel width is reduced (around .7mm pixel to pixel) and therefore the sub-pixel width is better - hence a more difinitive image.

Most PDP's are now coming standard with 720p or 1080i HD formats - but be careful what you buy. Make sure the panel itself (not the inputs or tuner module) is HD compliant - i.e. the panel should be 1080i compliant (XGA or higher resolution - 1024 x 1024 res or 1366 x 768 res). Anything less than that and it's VGA and therefore not able to display true 1080i resolution/formats - even though the tuner/input module accepts HD format inputs! You see, the formatter PCB inside the unit will de-construct the HD input and covert it to show 420p (Standard definition) on the panel.

So make sure any PDP you buy is fully 1080i compliant i.e. the panel as well as the tuner & input module.

As for the gas leaking and shit like that - it's a non-issue. Don't get overly wound up about the panel leaking gas - it's bullshit and a VERY rare occurrence.

Image retention in Plasma is an issue - only if you keep watching the same image or channel for a very long time i.e. the 'Sky' logo on the news channel may become burned into the panel if you watch 100's of hours of Sky News etc... If you constantly watch DVD movies in the 16:9 format and do not zoom the image to remove the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen, you will eventually see these bars as 'ghost' images in the future.... There is a 'Screen Wipe' function on most good models which help to reduce this effect.

LCD TV:

This is the Johnny Bollocks of TV/Display panels!!! Fecking brilliant technology :yo:

I would buy one of these over Plasma any day......... Why?? Resolution & contrast ratio. To explain:

LCD technology is able to produce a much higher pixel desity per square inch of display space - thus a much higher image resolution is achieved. Simple.

The latest Hitachi LCD TV - 37LD8800 series - is a beautiful piece of work! It is fully HDMI compliant with full 720p & 1080i resolution all the way to the panel. The contrast ratio is excellent while the viewing angle is now 170 degrees horizontal. It can reproduce colors well into 6 billion and over and therefore gives a true rendition of lifelike colors.

LCD does not suffer any image retention problems - and if slight image retention is noticed, it can simply be erased by watching another channel for a few minutes.

In my opinion:

If you want quality over size - LCD is the only way to go.
