Too many cyclists, they should all be taxed

Went out this morning along the A59 towards Clitheroe/Gisburn then cut through to the A65. Went to Settle then onwards to Ingleton where I decided to take a different route home than the usual via devlis bridge.

I cut off through Bentham and passed by the Great Stone of three stones. From that moment on I was swimming up a stream of never ending suicidal cyclists, there were thousands and thousands of em, all the way to Slaidburn and all the way to Dunsop Bridge then all the way back home to Longridge.

There were people (obviously with not much excitement in their lives) sat outside their houses on the verges cheering and watchin em go past:wank:

Hopefully these selfish morons will be too worn out to hit the roads next week end.

Tried Hardknott pass a few weeks ago and had a similar fiasco of a ride then too they really should give plenty of warning when they intend to inflict themselves upon the rest of us road tax paying population.

I'm afraid you will find too many people on these forums in favour of cyclists. Me included, as I rode to work and back until I was 25. No emissions, no wear and tear on the road. The second most vulnerable road user after pedestrians and top of the target list of many motorists.

Cyclists should be allowed to cycle on pavements. It is illogical stupidity that they are confined to the roads.

A cyclist hits a pedestrian on the pavement, most likely outcome, cuts and bruises, broken arm at most.

A car hits a cyclist on the road, most likely outcome, BLOOD, GUTS AND DEATH. Well done to the idiots who banned cyclist from riding on pavements.k1apk1ap

And what about all the morons on motorbikes - speeding, illegal number plates, crossing solid white lines to straighten a bend (I've seen it done), crashing into things, injuring people, wheelies, knee down - I could go on. The chances are you only have tax, insurance and MOT because it's the law and if it was the law for cycling then I'd comply as well. If you want cyclists to pay road tax then lobby the Government, they make the rules - don't blame cyclists.

I don't know what you do for a living but I put many thousands of pounds into the exchequer last year via employment, car and bike taxes so I think I have the right to use the facilities I pay for however I see fit. Perhaps you think pedestrians should also have to pay to use the roads?

Perhaps you also might like to try riding a pushbike on a busy road surrounded by speeding cars and motorbikes and then you might change your opinion.

I also think that a certain amount of cycling time should be undertaken before someone starts to drive or ride and then maybe the motoring madmen would be a little more understanding and less bigoted.

Keep them on the roads it keeps the cycling population down, if I am walking on the pavement & a cyclist comes towards me on the pavement I usually take one of the following courses of action,

A) Deliberately stand in there way & when they try to get round me I move in their path & make them go onto the road, usually they don't even look to see if it's safe to join the road.

B) If the path is narrow & a cyclist heads towards me I will side step & as they try to pass i will just catch them with my shoulder, some actually manage to stay on their bikes despite wobbling, others are not so fortunate.

Couple of years back Bev & I were walking our dogs, two lads of about 16 came up behind us on their bikes, I deliberately slowed my walk one of the lads went onto the road to pass us the other had his front wheel almost touching the back of my leg & he kept saying "Beep beep" I told the kid to fuck off onto the road & play road runner unless he wanted his bike wrapping round his head.

You're officially a grumpy old man DK. When I lived in Peterborough there were dedicated cycles lanes and pedestrians ignored the signs and walked in them. If I rode a pavement it was to avoid dangerous drivers. The only accidents I had on a bicycle were because there was a diesel spill the police didn't want to know about, a driver didn't look, or a pedestrian was a twat. I wouldn't ride on highways now without a full set of leathers and full face helmet.

Believe it or not I used to be heavily into cycling but I found the attitudes of many cyclist was really pissing me off, when we had the smallholding there was a footpath from one corner of one of the fields to the other, we only got the occasional rambler of whom most were respectful & closed gates.
At each corner there was a style to prevent cyclists, one afternoon Bev shouted me that someone was cycling through the field, I looked there were too blokes on racing bikes & as they got to the style they dismounted & lifted their bikes over then got back on rode past the stables & then opened my large five bar gate & proceeded to cycle down my drive.
I stopped them & made them turn round & push their bikes all the way back, they gave a bit of lip but decided better of it when Bev brought our four German shepherds out.

The bloody cyclists want to stay OFF the pavement, what total bollox "a broken arm at worst"!!:wank: I've seen an old woman hospitalised because of these selfish C unts!! and how about the bloody tossers that flick up onto the pavement, cross the red traffic lights and swerve back onto the road after, so they don't have to stop and abide by the laws everyone else has to!!
It's about time the twats had to have third party insurance!! to cover the damage they do to pedestrians and peoples cars in their mindless pursuit of cycling "freedom"!!:wank:

I understand that not all the "arse in the air" riders are like this, but as with bikers a few gets the rest a bad name!!it just boils my piss to see them doing it with no comeback!!

Maybe you're confusing those kids who cycle like they think they look cool doing crazy stunts, and the cyclists who use them as a means to exercise, recreation and transport?

You may as well tar all motorcyclists with one fat black brush if that's your attitude.

I travelled along the A50 yesterday afternoon .
There was a cycle time trial on, bloody racing bikes all over the shop, the riders had those stupid hats, throwing empty bottles all over the place, and straightening curves in the road (this is almost a motorway, NSL).

I seem to remember it is an offence to race on the public highway.

Morons.

Not quite the case in Lancashire, according to the Lancashire Constabulary (in last weeks lancashire evening post) 92 cyclists were prosecuted for traffic offences in the last decade... we sort em out on this side o'thill eh :-0)

92 in ten years? considering the amount of cyclists that ride through red lights, or who creep up on the inside, & the ones who ride at night with no lights etc I think 92 is piss poor & hardly a clampdown, bet there's been more than 92 bikers prosecuted for having small number plates in the last five years let alone ten.

I still ride a pushbike on the road so have a bit of empathy for both sides of the argument but I have to agree about cyclists in groups. No going into single file for them, even on a twisty road so the poor buggers behind them in cars or on motorcycles just have to grind their teeth. Most of these cyclists would own a car so why the f@ck do they abandon common sense and courtesy when they get on a pushbike?? Herd mentality I suppose, just like squid motorcyclists on a group ride.

In these austere times it's plainly clear that the government is missing out on a huge reservoir of additional cash. Even if they only taxed them at say ?2 a week:dunno: it would still amount to a sizable lump of cash into the governments coffers and it wouldn't impact on most cyclists whatsoever in most cases. Obviously if they were on benefits the tax could be waivered. Also, with having the ear of all the cycling groups Borris Johnson and the PM could easily bring in such a scheme.

As regards pedestrians, I think that would be a bit draconian.... but then again, footpaths don't build themselves

I didn't see Bradly Wiggins:bow: but it looks like that was the ride, at least on some of the roads.

Regarding "road tax" for cycles, how would it be implemented? Wheel size, age of rider? Would you suggest a tax on the "toy" bikes for very young children, or just on larger ones ridden by adults?

Thoughts please.
