Talking of tax.. Value for money ?

Do you think we get vfm when it comes to tax's paid ?

I personally think not..

If we paid ONE lot of tax ( income tax ) then sure.. but we pay it at every turn.

The average working man now has to work 27 weeks ( I believe ) of the year before he is working for himself and his family.. up to that point we are working for the man.

I base my thought on the following:

Given the state of afairs in everything from street cleaning to equipement for the armed forces

For evry person actually doing a manual job FOR the community, there are now EIGHTEEN pen pushers.


It is often said of an army that you can tell when it has been around too long because it consists of all general and no privates..

Perhaps it is time for the govt to either address the issues or suffer the consequences !

I have to agree with that John, for our area (4 areas) we just have 2 rangers + voluntereers (unpaid) but we have 5 gaffers above us + numerous admin staff, if anyone wants to hire (within the council or other official body) our service we have to put an on-cost on just to cover them, that makes it impossible to compete with the private sector.
"Get this" we have a woodlands section with no manual staff, but 7 office staff :bang:

Anyway they will have one less ranger this weekend as this one's off to Amsterdam now (with Villager), like to stop and talk, but I'm off now :yo:

a thought i`ve had for many years is to scrap income tax and pay vat on everything....not sure if you agree, but it would mean even those "outside" the system would contribute something..... :dunno:

Mao got rid of the intellectuals, teachers and managers and look what happened in China.

I am an average working man and PAYEr and contibute through the tax system to support all the services society decides it needs and through my 40% tax subsidize all the none tax payers, the self employed and all the takers from the system.

Jaws, do I think that we get value for money for the taxes we pay?
Well me personally, no, but as a society yes.

Some people are just too greedy, selfish and jealous that they have to bleat on about how bad things are.

I work 5 days a week from 09.30-19.30 - thats 10 hours without a break then return home and continue working from around 21.00 till [normally] between 01.00 and 02.00

On Saturdays and Sundays I have some time off to spend with the family BUT Saturdays I only put in around 6 hours and on a Sunday I'm a real slacker - I only do 8 hours

I do take holidays howvever -and every day that I am on holiday it costs me money in lost turnover and profit

I will pay as much if not more tax than you this year - and 50% of it I have to pay "UP FRONT"

When I calculate my hourly rate it's less than the Nat Min Wage and have ZERO guarantee that I can even pay my mortgage let alone feed the family at the end of every month

If I am sick - I still have to work daft hours

If I have an accident - I still have to work daft hours


I pay almost ?150 per month for private health care and critical health insurance because YOUR National Health System will do bugger all until you've waited 3 months in a queue - in 3 months without working I would be bankrupt If I try to claim ANYTHING on critical insurance I have to provide full acounts for the last 3 years

Oh !! Incidentally I also have to work about 6 hours every month as an UNPAID tax collector for the Gov't - they call it VAT

Yes I know it's my choice and I enjoy doing what I do for a living - otherwise I wouldn't fucking do it. Then some tosser comes along wanting "everything" for "nothing" and free advice - wastes an hour of your unpaid time - then fucks off elsewhere because some numpty is selling a similiar item for 2 pence less

And if the truth be know......that's why 1200Pete is packing it all in.

So who loses? everyone cos the next time anyone wants free advice off 1200Pete he won't be there to give it!!

The alternative? Declare myself bankrupt - sign on and claim everything possible off the state - they YOU could PAY me!! Sounds rather tempting

I work a 40 hr week and 'I' also give out free advice on this site as does BUZZ, JONO, MURT and many many others....

I was self employed prior to joining the cops and you can't tell me that all your hard earned goes through the books because i'll call you a liar!!!!!!!
SO it means you actually pay less tax than you should..
I pay income tax AND council tax which incidentally goes towards paying my own wage..........how mad is that, paying myself to go to work........
I too lost money when i went on holiday however its just one downside to many upsides.
When i go to work i get shit from the 1st minute to time i leave 8hrs after, i get my wage which i pay ?240pcm for my pension (yeh the cops pension is good but i fookin pay for it) last month i had ?750 stoppages for tax, NI, pension, federation subs & life insurance.. I was left with a national average wage afterwards for a job which endangers life..

All tax payers including you FB subsidize something.

A self employed friend of mine is only to pleased to tell me how little tax he pays compared to me. He is also proud to tell me of all the benefits, credits and perks that he receives. I believe that I have seen similar posts from some of the self employed on here.

I have re read my post FB. I have never "accused" anybody of anything, neither have I reverted to abuse.

Overall, I don't think it makes any difference how the tax is collected - this way....... or that way. The same amount of revenue needs to be raised however it's collected. :dunno:

I can see that a saving could be made in the actual cost of tax collection if it was all lumped together (like Denmark?), but at the end of the day we would (approx) pay the same.

One thing I would really like to know is what the daily take is on fuel revenue. 8 million cars...... "X" million trucks/buses.......... = feckin big bucks!

i too used to be self employed,and on one occasion paid a total of ?3200 tax(2 half yearly bills of ?1600)on earnings of approx ?22k.all of my accounting was done totally ligit,there were no cash jobs or anything like that.is it my fault i paid only that amount of tax...i think not.true i can claim for a percentage of my phone,heating,electricity bill etc etc,but why not as my home was my office..my car was my mode of transport so that i could do my job etc etc.also as a self employed person...i could receive no sick pay should i have become ill,no dole if i had no work through no fault of my own ,and no paid annual holidays,bank holidays etc.being self employed is bloody hard work and does not end at 5pm like all those "employees" out there.

this is not a dig at PAYE employees or anyone else.
