Was it not a hippy group that tried to save a bunch of trees in SoCal ?
They shackled ( appropriate that ! now how many of you know why ? ) themselves to the trees and the radio and tv reporters all said it looked like they were hugging them..
I tried to find reference to it but failed...It would have been about 1967 68 era..

Hhhmmm.
I seem to remember reading that they are one of the very few creatures on earth that no one can figure out what they are for.. They perform no ecological bridge between species, do not perform meaningful natural cullc.. they simply eat to live and live to eat.

Does anyone know better please ?

Hhhmmmmmm sounds like the Human species......................

(I stand corrected) ''A game'' take one human (as trees a crowd) into a woodland, blindfold them, spin human around several times, lead them to a tree, ask them to feel it, as they are blindfold they allways hugg it (to stop them tripping over roots) for support, feeling for the texture of the bark, girth, holes  and low branches, lead human back to the starting spot, spin around a few more times, remove blindfold and ask them to find their tree, this allways results in them hugging several more trees (very funny to watch) but the most amazing thing is I have never known anyone not to find their tree.

Could this be a new Bash game ''TREE HUGGING'' ??? it will result in some funny photos.

but there does not seem to be any animal that relies on the things being there..
Maybe it was the dinosaurs... and we are merely looking at the situation millions of years after the chain has already been broken :dunno:
