I live in what USED to be a pit village, my next door neighbour hasn't done a stroke of work since the pit shut nearly 15 years ago, he got a massive payout for white finger, and suffers from "depression" :cry: drives a bigger, newer car than me, two 42 inch tv's, holidays regularly, and does ok thank you very much, asked would he go back to the pit given the choice??

yes it was a twats trick HOW the mines were decimated, and if either side had given ANY thought to the future rather than "now" they could have put many of the pits in mothballs, to open them again when they became profitable again!! as it is, they can't be used again because of flooding collapse etc, so were all buggered,

I am 49 and lived through the closure of Irlam Steel works, Irlam CWS margarine works, Irlam CWS soap works, the decline of Salford and Manchester docks, the decimation of Warringtons wire industry which employed Thousands of men, I could go on but I wont. I was born in a cold damp draughty council house And am PROUD of my working class roots. BUT, all of my family have moved on from our working class roots because of the opportunities we had during the eighties, so don't tell me I didn't live through it, and don't tell me there wasn't a choice, If I had followed my Grandfathers foosteps, I would have worked on a blast furnace and died at 57 from overwork and shitty living working conditions...........as it is I am doing very nicely thanks!

I regularly work in your region, including the area you talk about Seaham and Ashington, and yes the decline up there is sad to see, but we could switch the argument to British seaside holiday resorts decimated by cheap flights to Spain (flights that were certainly beyond my parents reach in the 60's and 70's) not all progress is positive for everyone, but I firmly believe we all have a choice, life is what you make it, regardless of who the government of the day is......
