just looking up prices for a one way trip to london going by national travel bus or gnr train for a "little ol lady", :dunno:
and what a shock!!!! the bus would cost less than a tenner, and the train to the same destination ?67.90
and the "powers that be" cant understand why no one is using the railways
the difference in timings ar-nt important in this case ,though they only vary by half an hour or so, and it seems that traffic hold ups are "rife" on the railways as well nowadays,!!so maybe even less difference!!
and before any of you lot out there tells me to take her down by bike, it would still cost more than the bus, :f
anyone got any more examples of "rip off" britain,???

A couple of years ago my good lady and myself were enquiring about travelling to London, we were informed that to travel from Wakefield Westgate to London Kings cross on a return travel ticket with specified times would be ?74 each, however we later discovered that we could travel on an open ticket (no specified times of travel) for ?25 each, We then discovered that they were running a special offer of one way travel for ?10 so we could have just turned up at Westgate gone to London for a tenner, then when we were ready to return just turn up at Kings cross and travel back for a tenner.... we ended up going to Whitby instead :}

Ian you want to see rip-off Britain? Come to London! 'Congestion' charge ?5/day, parking in Westminster ?4/hr - some of the motorcycle parking bays having been replaced by car parking spaces since the implementation of said 'congestion' charge, tube ?4.10 one-day travelcard zone 1-2 although every single UK tax payer contributes to the tune of ?3 for EACH tube ticket bought, etc. etc....
As for private sector, the remaining Rover cars built in UK cost more in UK than on the continent, Ikea between 20% and 50% more expensive in UK than on continent, just two examples of how UK residents are creamed on a daily basis

The cost of going to the NEC from Holyhead for the bike show was ?38 and involved two changes. I went with a mate of mine who used to work for the railways and knows the system inside out... but even so he needed FIVE timetables to plan the trip and on the way back due to a delay we had to revise our plans. We were lucky in that a train that we were unaware of was available to take us from Birmingham New Steet to Crewe. We actually needed SIX timetables to ensure we were at Crewe in time for the last link to Holyhead.

Last year we went to the Manchester bike show at a cost of ?29 return each, the trip takes over 3 hours and involves a change of train. The same journey by car takes 2 hours and costs ?22 plus parking. So if there are more than two people travelling it is much cheaper to travel by car.

I lived on the Island for a few years back in the 60's & 70's and was always talk of a road bridge between Yarmouth & Lymington but never took off as it would have cost too many jobs !!

Still have a fondness of the Island and visit often to see sister.

NO DOUBT

it is rip off Britain compared with the US and the rest of Europe for prices. For years I would rant on about this to anyone who would listen, but after a few years in a job involving travelling to many different countries I realised how good we've got it. I'm talking about the good countries as well as the bad try buying a decent bike in the states, Norway and Germany if you haven't been bankrupted by the cost you've definately been pissed off with the fact it aint got enough power. In Indonesia anything bigger than 125 incurs huge taxes normal folks can't afford.
We are being ripped off on a huge scale weather or not its cause of tax or the multinationals just realise we're daft enough to pay the prices is another matter. But I for one wouldn't want to live anywhere else. The more you travel the more you look forward to coming home.

I get most my Cds & Dvds from Oz as I can buy them and have them posted to my door for a fraction of the high street prices here.

I work in the industry and know that the cost of production from raw materials to the shop floor is only pennies and the artists get fook all of that.:bang: :bang: :bang:

Here we go again, winge, winge, winge

Just listen to the advice of my good mate, one T.Bliar.

Pay up,pay up, pay up, pay up, pay up, pay up.....etc, ad infinitum.
You know its good for you and its your duty, so stop f...ing wingeing and keep on paying and make him happy.

And yes, high shop prices are very much influenced by the government too, through business rates etc, etc

Fair enough I live in empty glens of Scotland = no congestion charges and parking isn't an issue at work. I don't do public transport cause it would cost twice as much and is sh!te. it takes me half an hour to drive the twenty odd miles to work in the cage much less on the bird. Even though I'd love to buy a British car lets be honest they're crap. Good second hand cars can be picked up for pennies unless your into keeping up with the Jones's you'd have to be mad to buy new.
We are being ripped off but it's because we're so complacent in this country if I think something cost to much I don't buy it simple as that. If people stop paying ridiculus prices they will have to come down.:dunno:
