WIMHO if anyone wants evidence that power corrupts and that we now live in Orwellian times I think we have it!!

That chap from the labour conference was apparently detained under the prevention of terrorism act - glad we've got that clear now - one definition of terrorism is to heckle a politician (proly cause it hurts a politicians feelings).

Again it provides evidence that laws can be abused to control folks when it suits - so all those assurances from home secs. who want powers without requirement to refer to judges and give assurances that of course they will not misuse them....... are worth exactly bugger all..

Plus the latest scaremonger story from MCN - chips on number plates now which can be read by roadside devices - I no longer believe the reasons for any of these things. it might start out for a good reason (road tax/ins dodgers) but I now believe anything will simply end up as yet annother way to control peeps.

The thought police are out there, not sure if the truth is anymore!!!

wher does all the money go?

I work in the private sector of the Theatre industry (no funding), my desk is a piece of kitchen worktop with a not flat monitored aging computer on it, the heating is insufficent to heat the office so I dress accordingly, it is hot in summer so I open the tiny window and dess accordingly, when we send internal mail it is on the reverse of "scrap" paper.

Local council offices are air conditioned, centrally heated, all have nice deks with nice 17" flat screen monitors, in winter they control the temperature in the offices by opening a window and sending my council tax out into the street, so does the loal cop shop, the fire station and local, council funded (half empty) theatre. ther memos are all outsourced to a local printing company and printed on premium glossy paper, notification of bin collection changes came in a glossy 4 page brochure, it used to come on a piece of photocopied A5.

Thats where a lot of your hard earned goes.

IMHO

Supporting third world countries that were once part of the empire, supporting the war in Iraq, funding illegal immigrants, you name it any bastard that has never paid a penny to this country this government will pay shit loads of cash to. Live all your life legal paying your just taxes and for once raise an objection quite legitimatly in my view and the twats lob you in jail.

Remember the fire fighter's dispute? Blair & Co. gave themselves a 40% pay increase the day AFTER the election, (I wonder why not before the election  )
Then told the fire fighters to f**k off when they asked for the same. How can any politician expect us to have confidence in them?

In 1987 the government brought out 'fresh Start' for the prison service, no their part they agreed to increase the number of Prison Officers, and to agree pay rises in line with inflation.
two years ago an independant pay review body advised the government that prison officers pay was 34% down on what it should be if they had fulfilled their promises, this in turn affects out pensions to the same amount.
I believe we are something like 17% down on manpower. and people wonder why the prison service is considered the most stressfull job in the country.

Getting back to the point of leaving our fascist dictatorship/labour government...two questions.

1. Where would you go? That great freedom of the rich aka the US of A. Fancy a south american or far eastern dictatorship...I hear singapore is nice this time of year. Or you could try the frozen wastes of Mafia land led by Mr Putin and co. Alternativelly you could head for the social fascists (conformance or death being their motto) as displayed by Turky, Greece (anywhere in the med in fact) or Australia. How about some religious intolerance as displayed by the Saudis, Iran or India.

I lived in Cyprus for a year. It's not a bad place to retire to but hell on earth to live and work in, so I've had some 1st hand experience.

2. Do you think the Tories would be more democratic? Ha ha ha...huhhh. The libs...I doubt it.

The level of democracy in this country has gone up and down for centuries. From the near dictatorship of Cromwell and his judges to the anarchy of the 70's. As a nation (forget about politics) we're very good at defending our rights...so far we have replaced three monarchs by popular demand (Mary queen of scots, Charles 1st and James 2nd). OK so it was a while ago, but no-one has dared step over the line since, although Maggie T came close.

Believe me it could be worse. The labour goverment has turned authoritarian but it's just the natural end stage of a party that's been in power too long. It happened to the libs before the 1st world war and to the tories last time round and now it's happening again.

Don't run away...make your voice heard loud and clear and vote the buggers out!

All I'm gonna say...P :bang:
